master a flawless plywood inlay EASY with Shaper Origin, step-by-step

- The Shaper Origin offers a ton of amazing uses, but by far my favorite has been using it for inlays. Coupled with the Shaper Plate, the ability to make smaller inlays is fast, portable, and repeatable.
Here I walk through my process for setting up an inlay using white oak plywood for a larger table build. It's always nerve-wracking cutting into a completed table, but with the precision of the Shaper Origin it is much less of a guessing game.
The Shaper Origin is expensive, but in cases like this it's well-worth the investment in my opinion.

Get yourself a spiral down bit. Will prevent tear out on plywood. Nice video.
I use an up-cut with an offset of .05mm, or something like that, then a down-cut with a 0mm offset. The up-cut clears the material, then the down-cut makes sure there are no fuzzies on the top edge. If both sides need to be good, use a compression but for the final cut.

That's what I do, even for non-through cuts. Down-cut bits tend to clog up with the cuttings but if it's only the last little bit, it's not a problem. The other alternative is a compression bit. There are a lot of ways to skin this cat.
I use compression bits, but then again, I do inlays on my CNC

The Origin gen 1 has a little bar towards the back of the unit (near the operator) on the bottom surface that it uses to sense when the bit has made contact. You need that bar to be on a stable flat surface when doing auto z-touch otherwise it can't sense the bottom! That may be your issue with plate, just make sure the back is not over the hole.

I was wondering why it was rocking, rather than finding zero, at times. I tried it out today and you're absolutely correct. It'll make life a lot easier now. Thanks.
I was also having trouble the other day. No matter what I did, it wouldn't find zero. I blew air behind the spindle and cleared accumulated dust and everything started working again. Be very careful when doing this and use only enough pressure to get the job done. There are some fairly delicate printed cables back there.
Apply your double-sided tape across the letters and it would come loose. Then use a spatula to take it off the backer.
I think that was the issue this time for sure. I had enough tape to secure the piece but more behind the letters would help. Thanks for that!
Also highly recommend the shaper tape for those little pieces. I have the yellow double stick tape you have also and shaper is stronger.

Thanks for watching. Yes I use the PC for dovetails. I use the SO only for more unique joints. The speed of pulling out the PC and having it ready to go is still faster for me than the SO.

What was your offset placed at? Have ssaw on other Shapher Ogin they used -0.05?
