@@nlive8942 Good question! I have no idea. Maybe a bug in the game, or in how it's emulated? I've seen it before, but at least it's temporary. Thanks for watching.
Me too! That's why I let the travel animation run through for the first several trips - I used to just sit and watch it as a kid. Blew my mind at the time.
I saw this game when I was about 12 or 13. Never heard of Dune before. 30 years later I’m a full on Duneheard overjoyed after watching Dune Part 2 for the second time.
That's excellent. This game was my intro to the Dune universe too. My dad brought it home with our first computer, as he was a fan of the books. Thanks for watching!
Me too! It had just come out when my family got our first PC. Mind blowing. I had only played pretty rudimentary games at school previously. I was only eight though and I don’t think I got very far. I don’t think I ever figured out the military stuff and would eventually run out of spice and incur the wrath of the emperor…
If you enjoy this game's soundtrack (it's the best, objectively), check out the TH-cam or Bandcamp page of Stéphane Picq, the composer, who just released a remastered version of his Spice Opera album: stphanepicq.bandcamp.com/album/dune-spice-opera-2024-remaster www.youtube.com/@StephanePicqDune
he is described in the book as unflattering and akin to the slaves on Geidi Prime (which he was, at one point). The Josh Brolin version is perhaps the best looking Gurney there ever was
Some would say 1984 Patrick Stewart is a handsome man too! I do wonder what inspired the game designers with poor Duncan Idaho, he seems the most “off.”
Hi - thanks for watching! There are a couple versions that were released on floppy disk and a couple versions that were released later on CD-ROM. The CD versions add video clips from the original movie adaptation, voice acting, and the animation of flying through dunes and rock formations when you travel by orni, and maybe some smaller stuff that I’m forgetting at the moment. I play one of the CD versions, I bought a copy on eBay and ripped the files to my computer and play it using dosbox. Of course, I’ve seen websites where you can download both a floppy version or a CD version if you would rather go that route - the CD version is much larger (a couple hundred MB vs a couple MB) so it’s easy to tell which is which. I suspect you have the floppy version. But either the floppy or CD versions should have music, so if yours doesn’t, something is wrong with your sound card emulation. I’ve seen some posts on the dune2k forums troubleshooting that, but I’ve never had an issue with sound so can’t help you there. It’s a great game, hope you get it working!
@@slowham6337 I’ll have to find one of those websites. There are other problems with the game I have. If you don’t advance in the game the way you’re supposed to, the storyline won’t go forward, so Gurney doesn’t offer to train troops and I can’t find Chani unless I do things exactly the way they expect me to. Also it’s almost impossible to get ecology troops to advance past average or novice. And besides, I’m missing a lot by playing with no sound!
I'm hesitant to post a link due to copyright, but it's available on at least one of the abandonware sites, should be an easy search. Yes, the early game is pretty linear. But once you can start attacking Harkonnen fortresses you are less constrained. For example, in my last couple runs, I beat the game without meeting Kynes/unlocking ecology or even drinking the water of life. And in the floppy version, it's possible to skip defeating most of the fortresses and beat the game by growing vegetation up to the Harkonnen palace.
The fortresses are all to the north, so the Fremen troop needs to be starting from one of the northern sietches for espionage to be selectable. The Ergsun region is the easiest place to start your military campaign. For example, if you have a military troop at Ergsun-Tsymyn, it should be able to espionage the fortress straight to the north (Bledan-Tuek). Then it's easy to keep espionaging once you are in Harkonnen territory.
you have to be in a sietch near a Harkonnen fortress. These are usually in the northwest, where you first find army troops and krys knives. The "easy" fortresses are around the Ergsun and Haga areas. Don't forget to send a troop that is at least Skilled in Army and armed with at least knives. As soon as you see the blue icon above the fortress pull them out. Sometimes a fortress is actually empty or undermanned because they've attacked elsewhere.
Lol - this is meant to be a bit of an exhibition run, showing some losses as well. But yes, this was a laid back run and not optimized at all. Usually I play with a single-minded goal of minimizing in-game time. As you would imagine, this involves some pretty tight battle management. My latest run involves defeating all 21 harkonnen fortresses in two in-game days with no fremen losses. It’s up on my page if you’re interested.

Why do Stilgar and Chani look... rotten when you went to visit the vegetation. And Chani has a green stillsuit even after that ends?

great music and nostalgic gameplay. now I'm playing it again in dosbox after watching this. damn I'm getting old.
Nostalgia is a heck of a drug as you get older haha. Thanks for watching!
I wanted to play this but I did not know what to do. Thank you for this Video. Love it!! Thank you for your hard work of long game!

I loved this soundtrack and thought it sounded very futuristic. It’s still a good soundtrack, but Han Zimmer has surpassed it.
Gurney halleck looks like a madman, or the clown from twisted metal.
Haha now that image is going to be stuck in my head.
Pretty accurate to the book, actually - he's described as being basically hideous.
@@philipsalama8083 haha nice, I have to read the book once again.

I was able to download this game, but there’s no sound. Also your version seems to be a newer version. How did you get this game?

how can i use spies on enemy fortresses?
the option espionage is always disabled
