    It was good to hear a bit about the yeast and how it works in the different strength solutions. You have helped me to clarify and better understand some of the sights and smells I am encountering! Many thanks!

    Hope this isn’t weird, but you’ve got a nice, soothing voice. You should consider doing some voiceover videos.

      Among many other comparisons, I've been accused of being like Bob Ross lol. I like doing voiceover, but I never practice and rarely do it. I'd like to more and have the equipment to do it reasonably well. You've probably noticed, it's easy to develop video production style and habits, and keep doing the same type of thing. Lately I don't really have time to be creative adn it's mostly run and gun videos.

      Lol...I wouldn’t of said Bob Ross, but I do hope you do some voiceovers in the future, and yes I already see how it’s easy to fall into a creative rut. Hope you’re well, and thanks for the inspiration and suggestions on the goat rawhide collar.

    Steven, did you ever get around to try to grow oyster mushrooms from the leftover bark? I have been thinking about it everytime I heard you mention it and it sound like a brilliant idea which makes sense in so many ways

      I threw together quick experiment, but I don't think it took.

    What if you were to put the hide and liquid under a vacuum? Would that help force liquids into the hide quicker? Similar to quick pickling vegetables.

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Probably. I think if you were to look, you'd find that there have been patents on that and possibly used in the industry. I can't recall reading any mention of it, but it makes sense.

    Ever tried rotating hides between drying and rehydrating in the liquor? Could shorten the soak time with a strong enough solution.

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know if that would be true or not It would be a pain though and you'd have to be very careful not to damage the grain when dry and resoaking.

    @8:00 i have read somewhere or learned it from here but unsure, is it valid though to cut a little peace and try to boil it in water since leather will not shrink and hide will

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that is only for chrome tan. Vegetable tan will cook, shrink and harden. At medium temps, you can use that to advantage, like in my leather black jack beer mug video. There used to be a lot more items made with that method. It's called cuir boille or something approximately spelled like that anyway. At higher temps the leather becomes more damaged and brittle.

      @@SkillCult I love how certain things are a pro in some cases even though they seem like a con in most. Time to rewatch the beer mug video.

    • @SkillCult

      It was marketed as a corn, bone and shell grinder in the 1800's. Mostly for cracking corn to feed animals. It doesn't do bones really, but it does some shells.

      Annoyingly, no. I was so busy with trees and the garden and nursery stuff that I just never took the time. And they were gobbling all over the place nearby. Oh well. I never even got that air rifle sighted in yet after the rebuild.

    I've read that walnut husks have a lot of tannin, do you or anyone who reads this have experience with using walnut husks for tanning?

    • @samuelkorger3567
      @samuelkorger3567 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s interesting, tannin is a very polar molecule, I wonder if you could extract it from walnuts efficiently.

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is not the best tanning material, at least not black walnut, which by most accounts requires huge quantities. It has a lot of coloring matter that is not tannin. I think that Carpathian (aka english) walnuts might be higher and I have some saved to try out. I have an article on my website on vegetable tanning materials that lists a lot of materials and their tannin contents. But keep in mind, materials vary in the qualities the imbue to leather, so picking a material is not just about tanning content.

    • @TJHutchExotics
      @TJHutchExotics 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SkillCult do they make anything to test tannin content in tannin liquor? I’m guessing if they do it would be quite expensive

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TJHutchExotics It's cheap if you can find one. It's called a barkometer. It's just a hydrometer with a different scale. I'm not sure anyone makes them anymore.

    Speaking of temperatures, are there any issues to consider when tanning in sub zero temperatures?

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's usually said not to freeze tanning liquors. I'm really not sure though as I don't have any experience. Things can go very slow though. I need to get out and finish that cattle hide. thanks for reminding me :)
