Walks in Sussex: Piddinghoe in East Sussex

- Today I am taking a brief stroll around Piddinghoe, a beautiful, yet tiny, village along the river Ouse close to Newhaven in East Sussex.
The village was once a central player in Sussex smuggling. It is also notable for having the only remaining bottle-shaped brick kiln in the country. St John's Church is one of three in the Ouse Valley with a round Norman tower, the others being at nearby Southease and Lewes.

My family were from Piddinghoe and were members of the lifeboat crew. Many are buried in the local graveyard.
Thank you.
I had often driven past the turnoff to Piddinghoe . Such a delightful name. One such day I decided to take a look. And jolly glad I did too. I must admit though I did feel like a perfect stranger in very private surroundings, which of course I was. But a lovely place still
Piddinghoe church spire is mentioned in Kipling's poem "Sussex", where he refers to it as a dolphin on top and not a salmon (which it actually is)
Oh an easy mistake - they look so alike - NOT! :)
The fish was the earliest symbol for Christians.
Another great video Richard - what a very interesting church - very unusual architecture!
I should have gone inside! :)
Richard Vobes - was it locked? Chance for another video!
Lovely village and church~ hope you will consider returning perhaps, to allow us a peek inside the church and any other interesting bits we may not have seen this time, on your sort of spontaneous visit. Thank you!
Yes - it was a walk that I did on the back of a couple of others and I wanted to take advantage of the sunshine! A return is definitely in order - a look at the brick kiln would have been nice!
Richard while you are here, could you tell me is the live show on FB aired at 8pm there? I seem never to catch it ,as that would be 2 pm where I am ,yet when I have gone to the page then, it never seems to appear...?? Am I doing something wrong? I usually just go to youtube and catch you here .

Very beautiful Richard.
Thanks very much
According to the Cambridge Dictionary Lichen is pronounced "Lichin" in the UK but "Liken" in the US......01:32 Did you miss the Pheasant running across the graveyard?
Thanks for the pronunciation tip. And yes, I did miss the pheasant ! :)
Thanks for the lovely walk Richard. The church tower is one of only 3 round ones in Sussex, and the building is a 19th century barn converted into a boathouse.
Thanks Bren. It is a lovely place to explore and the Ouse looks so inviting too.
charming little village, beautifully filmed.
Thank you Mark!
Nice one Richard, lovely weather...
Finally the weather is with us! :)
