when we say house is a feeling, what we mean is that its NOT a genre... for example a rock song like 7 nation army from White Stripes can be played in a house set. A disco song like Love is the MEssage by MFSB can be played in a house set. A Classic House cut like Can You Feel It from Fingers can be played, A Techno cut like Strings of Life, rhythm is rhythm can be played in a house set, An R+B cut like Another Star by Stevie can be played, thus it's not a GENRE, it's a FEELING.
If you look at the history of the music way before it was labeled you'll see that what was played at the Loft, the Wherehouse, the Musicbox, the Garage was not one genre, they were musics from several genres with the common thread being that the cuts had to be danceable. Read any interview of the DJs that pioneered the scene or that were at the pioneering clubs and you'll see that they all will acknowledge a very multi-genre pallet. True heads from Chicago, NYC, NJ know this.
While Frankie Knuckles has the name "Godfather" it was really Ron Hardy who made it popular. Frankie just really played some disco tunes @ the gay club. Ron turned the style on its head and went way further than Frankie. The House that we hear today, the beats, the tempo all the funk. That is Ron Hardy's Muzic Box House music. Make no mistake about it. Frankie may have made House but Ron made it what it is. I can hear the NYC in Frankie's music. But at the time, Ron was a class all his own.
Yeah i'd agree you can't make a documentary without Chicago dj's but the 2 you mentioned are not the ones i'd pick. I'd go with the legends the guys who created the sound that we call House!
They know where it started. They know who are the top house DJ's are too. Mr Derrick Carter, Mr Mark Farina, Mr Glenn Underground, Ms. Collette and the rest of Lady Jane, Mr Sneak just to name a few.
comments and suggestions. -First off, please fix the typos in the names and spelling mistakes. -Then I would show these guys' names more than just once at the start. I know and recognize several of them, but the others are and remain unknown to me. -Since the audio is not so great, I would use subtitles extensively. -During the segments in the clubs, I would id the tracks (subtitles). thanks and good luck!
yes man, from NYC myself, i mean RAM JAM's Black Betty is a dance floor classic... what i think happens is people come into our music from derivative sources and so only get the stereotypical view of what House is... funny the other commentor seemed to be offended of the idea that different styles of music were and are played in a house set... anyway keep on groovin!
I grew up in the Chicago House scene. What I'm telling you is first hand knowledge. I kicked it at the Warehouse and The Muzic Box. Frankie and Ron are my 2 faves. But there is a distinct difference between the 2. Ron was Frankie's protege at the Warehouse. When Ron went to the Box and Frankie to the Power Plant. You could hear the change in Ron's music as he started to come into his own. Experimenting with various forms of music and beats. Listen to the 2 re-edits of Let No Man Put Asunder &see
That whole paragraph is explaining why we say "house is a feeling", i'm not just talking about reading this is what i experienced. I've heard larry play marianne faithfull, i've heard clausell play todo, i've heard tony play main source. I even state in the paragraph a "classic house cut", so it's obvious i'm saying house is a genre, specifically the music played at the wherehouse in chicago by frankie knuckles. A good dj will go beyond that though, not sure why thats such a puzzle to u..
7 nation army works fine with out a remix actually... listen to it... also more Rock cuts that weren't made to be played in a house set are Ram Jam Black betty, Police "when the world is running down", "voices" , doobie brother's "Long Train running", etc... ESG sounds very much like White Stripes even though they pre-date them about 30 years, they have several House classics (Standing in Line, Moody, etc...)... House is a feeling.
That's right...Hardy came later, and his techno harsh sound some would call a new dimension while most of the original underground crowd that it was SHYTE, which you don't get.
hi guys...im quite new to music and i want to learn how to detect for example if i play a synth part in a daw...how do i find out what key it is in and also how do i accompany the synth part with the right kick drum?if for example the lead synth is in c...do all the other sounds have to be in c also?the kick, bass, pads, percussion, guitar and so on also have to be in c?how do you go about finding out what key it is in...can you determine this by ear??thanx
House Music started in NYC. Chicago, took control of a name and claimed being the creator. As if you were producing a type of music and dance, someone sees it, names it, and claims it as their own. No documentary of House Music starts without mentioning NYC, Paradise Garage, the Loft, Larry Levan, and Frankie Knuckles! All NYC.
WOW!!! I can't believe that no one on this video actually gave the definition of House Music. It did start as just a name. When partied at the Wharehouse. We would make bootleg tapes of Frankie's sets and sell them. The tapes became know as "House Tapes". Then Ron Hardy came along and took the music to another level at the Music Box but the name House stuck. It was now Ron Hardy House. The tapes took off so well that they stopped calling our style Preppy and started calling us House Niggas.
Um, yeah, good for you, no one said there weren't any limits and no i have no idea what Francois K said, i'm coming more from the garage and loft ethos though which is where FK and B&S are derived from, which i'm sure you know.
That whole paragraph is explaining why we say "house is a feeling", i'm not talking about reading anything either this is what i experienced. I've heard larry play marianne faithfull, i've head clausell play todo, i've heard tony play main source. I even state in the paragraph a "classic house cut", so it's obvious i'm saying house is a genre, specifically the music played at the wherehouse in chicago by frankie knuckles. Now of course the term has been bastardized to mean nothing at all...
I never said Ron started anything. I said he expanded it. But first of all Frankie really only mixed the records a little bit. Ron ripped them to shreds. Playing records backwards speeding up tempos taking out the bass, two tracks at the same time. Frankie didn't play songs like Bad Luck, Welcome To The Club, Down to love town The More I Get. Or any of the really soulful cuts that Ron played. The Box wasn't a "str8" club, just more than the WH and "less soulful" is just crazy
Honestly, not sure what i did to you to make you come out your face and throw your opinion around but thanks for agreeing with me. If you read my comment closely you'll note that i say WHEN we say house is a felling we are saying it's NOT a genre. The WHEN is key in that sentence, meaning it's not an ABSOLUTE statement that House is not a genre, but i guess those nuances are bit to subtle and oh corny... Of course HOUSE could be a genre as well, but thanks for your color commentary.
hmm i think you should look up the pioneers of house and dance and see what they say about genre mixing... google larry levan, david mancuso, frankie knuckles and ron hardy also tony humphries and timmy regisford... i'm curious how long you have been into house?
Great debate :-P. This guy doesnt want to admit he is contradicting himself. A few posts before he said "thus it's not a GENRE, it's a FEELING" now he said the opposite but with the nuance. We all have read that early house djs made a mixture of music in their sets, but mainly disco, r&b, and synth euro tracks. Bu there was some point that house as a genre was clearly identified.
I never said Ron started anything. I said he made it what it is. I've listened to early DJs and as I said I could hear the NYC sound in Frankie's music. I went to the Warehouse, Power Plant The Muzic Box and all the rest. I witnessed the transition From Frankie House to Hardy House. Ron used his own beat tracks, sped the tempo up and played more than disco. This is what I am talking about. And to say the Muzic Box was less soulful is just dumb
White Stripes in a House set. Wow. Maybe if it's a House remix you mean right? Please post a mix with artists like White Stripes in a House set and we can all decide if it works, cool?
Cont... I know it seems hard for people to wrap their minds around the fact that a true underground club through the night will visit all sorts of genres, of course most of the night will be what we traditional call house but in a 8-12 hour set (which is what the real undergrounds sport) several genres are visited. read interviews of Larry Levan, Ron Hardy, Knuckles, Tony Humphries, these are the true pioneers, the trail blazers that made the way for the Tiestos... i can send links-message me

OK so im just one minute in and already wondering why the documentary makers have paid no attention at all to the varying standards of audio on the djs introducing themselves (especially as its a music doc). you can easily have equalised those bits of audio so they where audible over the music bed. not holding out much hope for this one. ill give it another ten minutes.
Man that white stripes argument.. I was in Ibiza 2 years ago, and was very disaponting all the kids with no taste in music that only goes clubbing for get drunk, was singing that song over mostly every beat the dj played. It could be that song has a 4/4 pattern, but it hasnt anything to do with house music for me. If you hear a dj playing that, is beacause he wants to get smart putting a rock song or he just want to please those drunk kids that doesnt care about the music at all
HArdy was an innovator as a DJ, but only in Chi. His quite cuts were already done in NYC. His sound appealed to a less hip, straight crowd-the more discenring gays and straights couldn't stand his music-it was closer to techno and pretty damn souless without a doubt.
I noticed a trend in all the post on this vid. Everyone is giving credit to mostly 3 DJs. Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy. Also 3 innovative clubs The Garage, The Warehouse and The Muzic Box. But of these 3 Ron Hardy ain't from NYC. So you wanna hate? You ain't never stepped fgoot in no club in Chi so you don't know Chi. I don't know NY but I listened and have a gang of Larry Levan remixes and respect his music. But YOU!!! You just hatin cus Ron aint from NYC
if your talking about ESG's Moody then that's the only tune I agree with. I don't care. I mean I mashup country and hip hop. But it's just when I'm feeling stupid, Last comment: Leave anything that is not House, Classic or New shit out of a House set.
What you completely neglect to mention was that large swaths of Chi didn't like his music, and agreed with me. It was mainly a str8 audience, and str8 crowds are never considered bleeding edge when it comes to clubs.
