Juuzo Kabuto (Kouji grand father) designed and built Mazinger Z, then his son (Kenso Kabuto which is Kouji's father) designed and built Great Mazinger. This is in the original story. In the Mazinkaiser OVAs, it was kinda a reboot, and they said that Juuzo decided to build an even better Mazinger that would stay hidden until really needed, that all powerful robot was Mazinkaiser, then ultimate Mazinger.

Tan hermosas y epicas como estas las de Kaiser

In the manga, they explain the Kabuto family is one of the wealthiest in Japan, thanks to their inventions and global patents.
