Watched many times since you offered this mini vacation. Always love to watch you paint. The way you apply paint to the canvas is like no other artist. The results are always stunning. Took my first plein air workshop with you in 1997 at Greenville Arms in Greenville, NY. I've been painting plein air ever since. During COVID, (following your example of the pond) I started a series of the meadow that has developed on the land which I used to farm. So much to paint everyday different. Didn't do a painting everyday but I painted about 10 a month. I call it "MY PLACE, The Meadow Series". Thank you for your inspirations Kevin. You truly opened my eyes to the most rewarding way to being a painter.
Nice! Thank you, Kevin. You’re a virtuoso, using your loosely held baton to summon and capture the beautiful colors as you light up your canvas with generous amounts of paint. Your brushes dance with delight. This was an awakening for me to the joy and possibilities of expressing oneself in alla prima plein air painting. Wonderful.
Thanks for giving us the opportunity to see you at work. Up to now we have mainly seen you from your great books. Best wishes to you and Wanda. David and Carole Pullen U.K.
Crazy wonderful layers of paint! Watching one thick layer after another, piled on top was amazing. I was certain Kevin was 'overworking'; indeed I thought there were some nice passages that he simply covered over with more paint. Such masterful brushwork- he can create a thin, expressive line from a messy brush loaded with different colors. Most of the time, closeup I could not make out what he was doing. But take a step back, and it all comes together as a sparkling vibrant scene. I marvel at paintings that have different qualities at varied distances. Creating a beautiful scene, while letting paint be paint, is the ultimate success.
Thank you, Kevin!!! Watched this again today and it did my heart so much good. During Covid, I spent months taking care of my Mom in hospice. After her passing, it took months before I could even think about painting, the joy had gone out of my life. Now, I paint because my parents were my greatest cheerleaders and I know the joy I get from it is just another sign that they are with me in the process. One of my bucket list goals is to one day afford one of your workshops as well as see Italy (I've never been out of the US). What a joy to be able to return to this video to be inspired!! Grazie!!
Love this painting you've created with its incredibly beautiful greens and blue reflections dancing all around those sweet little bouncing marina boats...must be tricky to paint...just hold still will you haha whilst I try to paint your prow...I'm given to envy here...imagine that ...vacationing on the Mediterranean...o' well alas maybe some day ...cheers anyways and thanks for this video!
This is amazing at last a true impressionist painter, learned so much from this video, thank you for sharing, been self taught is hard having this video is vital to learn new ways to look at paint. Irish Artist 🎨
Love it! Ran for my colorwheel to figure out how you were using color. Those delicate brushstrokes are amazing! I see that your pallette has expanded to 2 yellow, etc., I will admit that the sound effects were maddening! That woman behind you said "perfect" at least 2 dozen times!
Lyn Lasneski recommended that i watch your video and I was delighted. I lived in Italy many years ago, and this was a sweet remembrance of my time there. I was intrigued how your “conversation” with this place translated into color and shape. Thank you.
Thank you Kevin for thinking of us all and sharing your painting . Enjoyed and learned so much watching each brushstroke carving, pushing and pulling paint. Super!
Thank you for posting. It really felt like I was there with all of the ambient sounds, even the water lapping on the boats. Really a wonderful calm beautiful warm day at the beautiful port. Reminded me of when I lived/worked in Santa Cruz, CA along the beautiful ocean shore. It was joy to watch you paint, real life painting, not a studio version. Ciao bella!
Thank you Kevin for this valuable lesson FREE!! You are a confident and masterful painter which shows in your passionate work. Just looking at you blending and building the layers little by little till it resembles a stunning piece of art. Beautiful.
Thank you, Kevin, for sharing this--such a nice gesture. You couldn't have selected a more appropriate place to share. I was in Italy in 2018 and have been saddened by all of that country's recent losses.
Kevin, Thank you for sharing. You are correct, the 'on-line Portofino vacation', is perfect for those of us cooped up in our homes. While the video is good for artists to learn some painting techniques from you, it also enlightens collectors, like Lee and I, to what to look for in a good painting. Loved seeing you and hearing your voice. We hope that you will visit us on Maui in the future. Mahalo.
Thanks Kevin & Wanda for providing a trip to Italy to watch Kevin demo. It was a great view and I solidified some concepts I first learned from you, Kevin, at a workshop in Taos a couple years ago. I saw a technique during this demo that you and Walt were discussing, having to do with painting a thin line and how it was good to paint on either side of it to create it. Muchisimas gracias!
Thank you so so much!!! I love Italy so much and love painting it. Your work is so inspiring and I cannot wait to take an hour to watch and learn - saving!!!
Thank you so much for the free video demonstration! Those were complicated boats; but you pulled it off so skillfully. Especially learned a lot in the final moments when all the prep work laid the ground for all those fine lines. The way you cut in with the negative painting is real artistry!
Thanks Kevin. For being such a great inspiration to me and so many. Love your book I bought, color and light in landscape paintings. Thanks again for everything!
I have purchased every art book that I could get my hands on. You want to know which is my favorite of all? 'Landscape Painting Inside & Out' by Kevin Macpherson! I am so honored to have this TH-cam SUBSCRIPTION! Thank you, Mr. Macpherson for changing my art life COMPLETELY!!!!!!!!
Thank you for a wonderful learning experience. The video was very informative. You make painting a scene like you did very easy. It looked like the canvas was telling you exactly where to put each brushstroke.
Thank you for sharing this. It was fascinating watching the dance between you, the canvas, and the abstract shapes in colors transform into this lovely scene! I'm taking Lyn Lasneski's class.
Yes, Thank you Kevin for sharing this video with us! Very inspirational to watch your process again. I'm living in southern Germany now and am starting to paint more and the video and your books are a constant resource for technique and motivation. I hope to one day join another one of your classes.
Thank you for sharing your video! It came highly recommended by Lyn Lasneski. I love how it captured your painting process and I thoroughly enjoyed soaking in the peace, tranquility and inspiration of your painting location. It was truly like a mini plein air painting vacation!
Thanks Kevin, your reflections on the water were amazing! I am just starting art and taking an on-Line art class with Lyn Lasneski. She speaks so highly of you and I can see why now.
Looks like a Soltex easel! I have one & loved it until the legs stopped sliding closed like they should..had to go back to my old French easel...loved the demo...thanks for the Joy!
Say hi to Lyn. Glad you enjoyed watching the video and was able to take you away from all of the bad stuff that has been happening all around us. Stay safe.
This was beautiful. I adore Italy. It was so interesting to watch you paint, the way you hold and use your brush (I'm a newbie), how relaxed you are when you paint. The colors you see are far more vibrant and varied than what I saw in the scene. The luminescence you created in the water was really nice! Thank you for sharing this. I am also one of Lyn Lasneski's students.
Loved watching this Kevin! I have been following your work for years and your first oil painting book you released years ago taught me so much and I still go back to it time and time again. Just subscribed to your channel!
Kevin, did you decide early on that the brightest bright would be the left cabin panel of the middle boat? Were other lit areas vying for your attention? Your choice is genius!
Love your video. As a beginner to oils i was able to see how you applied paint and built your shapes, adding the true colour to shine from the grays. Jewel like. I have learned a lot and will apply to my painting. What oil medium do you add to your paint?
I don’t remember, but I am sure it is white, yellow, red and blue. I usually use, titanium white, cadmium yellow light, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue.
I usually use one brush throughout my painting process. But funny because my easel has a bunch of brushes in it. I switch using different brushes all of the time but not always while painting.
Hi Marcella, Kevin says he doesn’t remember what brushes he used on this painting. He always changes his brushes through the years. He has a ton of brushes. Luckily I get the ones he doesn’t want anymore for when I paint. Kevin’s palette does change too. Usually titanium white, cadmium red or alizarin, ultramarine blue and Cadmium yellow light. He uses mostly Gamblin oil colors but he does switch to Sennelier oil paints.
It's a very richly colored painting of boats in a harbour. At the time of day there was the gentle hustle and bustle of tourists, swimmers, boats people. How could he have introduced these to have pictured more completely the atmosphere of Portofino ? It looks very difficult.
I always feel robbed when there are few comments from the artist. How much more one would understand. Maybe he feels that if he gave comments he would be cheated as the video is free.
Thank you! ! ! “Think about why we paint… & why we don’t paint… and why we should.” ❤️
Would love to hear your comments and feel free to subscribe to my channel.
Such a generous gift. I know countless others were lifted up today by this lovely ‘vacation’! Thank you.
Kevin, love your explanation about how we have conversations with the environment.
Thank you.

Glorious!
