It’s hard to nail down vocal quality.
Technique is measurable, but natural style is oh so elusive.
Stevie is one of those singers that embodies this sublime element.

I could listen to her isolated voice all day long. I love how her voice variates and the highs and lows. I dont knwo anything about pitch, and music vocals, but I love her voice, the rawness especially.

  • @montierobertson3449
    @montierobertson3449 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

Stevie Nicks, is the ultimate example of story telling and style over technique. Not to say technique isn’t important for a pro singer ( because it really is) , but some abilities are just raw and natural , Stevie‘s ability to connect with the listener and an audience might be the greatest level you can accomplish.
I absolutely love her tone, her spiritual persona, and her ability to communicate on a musical level.
She’s one of the greatest legends of all time in music( my humble opinion)

Stevie Nicks has one of the sexiest, most legendary contralto voices in popular music, and the stuff she recorded with Fleetwood Mac, as well as her solo classics, are just phenomenal!

  • @simonnarramore6098

When I first heard Fleetwood Mac as a teenager back in the 70's I was into AC/DC, Sabbath, UFO etc then we hear Rumours being played in the 6th form rest room at school and it was like "what's going on?! My Metal brain is being invaded by this soft pop rock! And it loves it!" Obviously it helped that Stevie was hot but her voice was incredible! Her faults make her the singer she is. If she was perfect I think her songs would sound a bit bland and she'd just be any old singer but the moment you hear her you know it's her. If this was recorded today you can bet they'd have engineered out all these "faults" and it would be elevator music. Great analysis as usual Ken and really enjoying this series.

Stevie is an awesome singer. I was able too see them in concert in the 70’s and then a couple of years ago. Back in the day they were so original with their music, I totally love the band. Another band that was so original in the 70’s were Moody Blues. Their music was really out there. I was also able too see them in concert back in the day.

Thank you, Ken! I have absolutely loved the song "Rhiannon" for as long as I can remember. I am 48, so I was 2 years old when it was released. My mother could have been Stevie Nicks' twin. I distinctly remember listening to it while being chauffeured around in my mom's Trans Am during my childhood. I have always loved that song. Your insight and explanation of the genius that went into its recording is fascinating! I learned SO much. You are a phenomenal educator of voice, sound and music! I happily subscribed, and am very excited to hear and learn more. Thank you!

Rhiannon is the first rock song I heard on the radio growing up. I grew up in a very country western family with Conway, Patsy and so forth. I fell in love instantly with Fleetwood Mac. If I'm not mistaken, Fleetwood Mac was also the first rock band to front line two female singers. Yes, Stevie is not a Whitney or Miriah but she has the one thing that makes all singers...BELIEVABILITY. You could sing like Babs...but no believability and you might as well be in the back row of the choir. Thanks for the review Ken.

I think her plosives are important because her timing is so impeccable. Not just her pitch, but her timing. Those plosives add 'kick' to the kick drum, if you will. Her plosives are percussive, another percussion instrument, here.

Stevie, like Melissa Etheridge, has a very distinctive voice. Stevie and Lindsay Buckingham changed Fleetwood Mac from just a hippie band to a hippie band with a tremendous amount of commercial appeal.
In the movie The Last Mimzy, there is this adorable little five year old actress named Rhiannon Leigh Wry. At another forum (not YT) someone wrote:"Tell me that little girl's mother isn't a Stevie Nicks fan."

Another thing to remember about Fleetwood Mac is that their studio recordings were amazing. They can sound good on anything but on audiophile stuff, we're listening to the best engineers and studios and equipment of the time. That said, you could record them on a mono cassette player and they'd sound great; Stevie and the band are that good.

Stevie Nicks is awesome. Worked so well vocally with Lindsey and Christine.
Can't mention everyone, but Grace Slick deserved a mention. Have you done or do you plan to do any Jefferson Airplane?

Stevie Nicks vocal prowess is immediately recognizable.
    (Much like Janice Joplin)
However, Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, Janet Gardner - Vixen, Lita Ford, Grace Slick, Linda Rondstadt, are all great & a few, that I don’t think you’ve done an isolated vocal on yet.

I’m loving Nicks again. I went thru a snooty phase in my twenties where I felt her voice was not ‘impressive.’ Stupid I know. I feel much more enlightened now .... and she IS AMAZING and so is Lyndsey! The whole band. I also am always surprised how frequently you find Waddy Wachtel and Skunk Baxter in so many bands in the era and still !

I would put Kate Bush in that group of female rock singers. Maybe not quite as rock as some of the other vocalists you mentioned but she could belt it out when she wanted too. Perhaps you could do an isolated vocal of her, a very unique voice.

Hey Ken! Fleetwood Mac! Stevie! One of my favorite female singers. My ex girlfriend's idol. She did everything Stevie did. Hair, clothes, makeup, jewelry, everything! We saw Stevie at Pine Knob outside of Detroit. 2nd row center in front of Stevie's mic. Fantastic show. This was back in the mid 90's. Stevie's voice and personna is incredible. When you look up the word sexy in the dictionary there is a picture of Stevie Nicks. To this day with Stevie now in her 70's, she is still beautiful and can outperform most. As far as FM i don't like what they did to Lindsey Buckingham. I miss his vocals and his amazing guitar work. Another thing i don't understand is why all these artists are selling the rights to their songs. I really don't think they need the money. Do you really need another 100 or 200 million? Who knows why rock stars do what they do? I guess you just follow your Dreams and Go Your Own Way!
