I read some years ago that, if I remember correctly, the battle of Bataan was the first US battle of WWII and the last battle of WWI, referring to the fact that the defenders were relying on equipment used in WWI.
My Father's unit 2nd Engineers Special Brigade Amphibious Combat Engineer 592nd Boat and shore Regiment helped liberate Bataan and Corrigidor then on up to Oval Bay Subic Bay Manilla Leyte and Luzon....Miss you Pops...i remember watching this in our living room in 1967 with my Dad and brother...RIP GUY'S Edit: Dad got orders while on Bataan to go to Corrigidor from Corrigidor he went back to Bataan then on up . 👉♥️🇺🇲🙏🗽🦅
Every time I see Wayne in a movie i'm surprised by how natural he is on screen. Seems like a modern actor. Ironically, in those days he was criticized for being too one-dimensional. His performance here...and as Ethan Edwards in The Searchers, and Rooster Cogburn in True Grit.. prove otherwise.
I once read an autobiography called Last man off Corigedor . He said someone had found a few bottles of Coke. I believe that they normally sold for five cents. They were sold for several dollars each. People had money, but little of any value to spend it on.
MacArthur refused to follow plan orange neglected to move hundreds of thousands of tons of munitions and supplies to baton Philippines were fallen regardless, but his actions should've warranted Court Marshall.
And the funny thing is, Wayne tried multiple times to get in, but was denied by circumstances and other people. Many of the people criticizing him never even tried to join the military. Irony.
True, and during WW2 Filipinos fought side by side. Germany and Japan are with the US ASEAN and NATO's side now if ever things get worse with Russia and China. History is "funny" like that.
He was 33 and had four children and no military training and no special skills. He was too old for combat. In comparison, "Pappy" Boyington was five years younger and considered an old man by his men. The vast majority of Hollywood stars of his age without special skills who enlisted did little beyond sell war bonds, much to their frustration.
My dad's uncle was captured on Bataan, 31st Infantry Regt. He survived but died in 84. My hero.
Respec.

He was also very agile!
Those cigarettes killed you John Wayne.
Yep.
And they're not all that great either.

The Battleing Bastards of Bataan,
No Mama, no Papa, no Uncle Sam.
The unmistakable lighting and cinematography of Nicholas Musaraca. Look at the framing of each shot.
Great movie 12/11/24

Is this where all the people who didn't serve in the military criticize John Wayne for not serving in the military?
And the funny thing is, Wayne tried multiple times to get in, but was denied by circumstances and other people. Many of the people criticizing him never even tried to join the military. Irony.

Do even just a little bit of research, and you'll find that there were quite a few actors that never served. So what!
Did you ever serve?
