      Throgh the years, Buddy Ebsen & Max Baer Jr. always did speak with fund memories of Iren Ryan! They were genual, natural & dep feeling good people, and entertainers, several different ways! The Clampet family cast members, they, they were acual true tallented entertainers! Now in the 21st,? What happened to acters&actressess who had human emotion revelings on the silver screen??! Now these days, HaHH?! It's onleviolence! "" These so called super stars can play just ; "" I KILL YOU, YOU KILL ME! = OH YEAH? RENG - E - E H! ! The BHB castmembers were, multy talents . .

      Bea Benadaret was originally going to be cast as "Granny" (ultimately she portrayed "Aunt Pearl"-Jethro's mother). However when she saw Irene Ryan's audition-she told Beverly Hillibillies creator Paul Henning--"you just found your Granny!!". The story goes that when Max Baer Jr. (Jethro) came for his audition he was so nervous he couldn't remember his lines. His audition was delayed until later in the day so Irene Ryan took him out to lunch and got him so drunk that when he returned for his audition he was so convincing as Jethro he was hired on the spot

    • @retroguy9494
      @retroguy9494 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another true story about Granny (told by Irene Ryan herself in an interview) was that she wasn't going to get the part and they didn't even want her to audition, feeling she was too young to play granny. But as she said, an actress should be versatile enough to play any age if she's good. So she showed up to the audition in full makeup and costume as Granny and her acting was so good she got the part!

      Granny was a well loved Character due in no small part to how Irene Ryan played that Character. To say it was any one character would have broke the shpw, is just because that Character was your favourite. It was the combination of all the Clampett cast, the show would have been the same without anyone one of them. Right cast and good writers made that show the classic it is today.

      At age 8 I stood in line for a couple of hours at a rodeo in Omaha, Neb. to get her autograph. When I finally got up to the desk where she was at I couldn't say a word. LOL! She was indeed stunningly beautiful and as sweet as could be. She said "Hello, how are you?". I just stared at her. Fast forward to a year before she passed. I had a friend who lived in Baton Rouge, LA and I used to joke with her that if she ever ran into DD (I knew Miss D lived in Baton Rouge) to please ask for another autographed picture because after 50+ years my original was long gone. My girlfriend laughed that she would ever run into her but lo and behold, at a wake, she ran into her. My girlfriend reluctantly and apologetically asked her for her autograph. Miss D took my friend's info and sent her an autographed photo! She didn't mind my friend asking her for the autograph and was again super sweet. I loved her also because she loved animals.

      Actually, the other one still got sick, tho they changed the makeup a little, buy still cuz I forget how long filming went over n hrs on set were crazy cruel. Theres a few others who famously ended up either not taking or getting the job and in ways better they didn’t. For anyone who hasn’t read about it, it’s interesting to look into it. Like how the cast and crew were all treated. What horrible conditions they had to deal with on set. Judy Garland was greatly affected in a bad way...and even for the time period and ppl were then being in contracts for yrs being ‘owned’ by a specific Film Co or network, the money they were paid was minimal and not worth it. I was shocked at ALL the things I didn’t know. What I read also explained what really was in background, and not the myth of the person hanging themselves caught on camera. Annnyway, wasn’t that long ago I read about it again, and there’s SO MUCH that is really sad it kinda changes how you see the movie at first.Sry.

    I remember when there were talking to Buddy Ebsen one time, it was about the show. He was whittling a stick sitting on a bench, at his home. In the interview, it was asked by the person who was doing the interview with Buddy, and they asked him, what did he miss the most about the show. folkes' let me tell you something, this man has tears in his eyes and you could hear it in his voice. His exact words was He missed Granny!! As long as I live, I'll never forget that moment. It actually brought tears to my eyes because of it. Alot of people also don't know that he was the first to play the Tin Man, in The Wizard of Oz. But' because of him having a Allergic reaction from the paint they applied on him, which just about killed Buddy, the part was given to someone else.

This led to severe medical issues including body aches, muscle cramps and when the dust got into his lungs, shortness of breath which got so severe he had to be hospitalized for several weeks. I think what the OP is referring to was the fact that the bosses at MGM did not believe he was really ill and ordered him back to work. But the doctors and nurses got angry and basically told them off. This led to the studio changing the makeup to aluminum paste instead of dust for his replacement, Jack Haley.

    In the pilot episode Mr. Drysdale's secretary was played by a young man, Robert Osborne, who had been in Lucille Ball's Desilu Playhouse acting class. Mr. Osborne went on to be a distinguished Hollywood-based journalist, and the host of TCM, the classic movie cable channel.

    it was amazing that granny never seemed to age. She started old and stayed the same.

    I find it so tragic that the majority of the cast died of cancer. Many individuals during that time period, were smokers or surrounded by smokers. We did make changes in diet and medicine has made major strides in interventions to early diagnosis of cancer and treatment. I adored this show. I lived in NY as a child and was convinced that this was the way the wealthy lived in CA. When I was 10, we moved to CA due to a change in my father’s business and we continued to live our lower middle class life where hard work was valued. Though I laughed at the antics of the Clampet family, I secretly could see elements of my family in their hard work ethics. I so wish the show was still on TV. As a child, I waved to Granny until the very last second of the show would sin off. Avid fans of the show, know exactly what I am talking about and hopefully they did the same!
