Holy crap. I haven't heard this song in YEARS. My mother used to put a DVD full of lullabies and soft songs, and I would fall asleep to the music, and I feel like crying from listening to this song.
My Mom used to sing to me then my brothers, i loved hearing her sing. I then sang to my daughter and she sang to her daughter and i sang to her. Hopefully my grandaughter will sing to her daughter, or son and will hear it from their mom, grandma, and great grandma. 🙂
I played this CD several times for my baby back in 1997 through the year 2000 at least. I still love this til this day at age 60 glad others love this as well
The X Files Invocation The music from All The Pretty Little Horses without The Lyrics was used it was also used as A Haunted Nursery scare in Sierra's Phantasmagoria Game. Apparently The song is about death meaning that The Baby goes to Heaven or Hell or some place like that.@@silass3640
I haven't heard this song in so many years. I used to sing it to my son when he was a baby...30 years ago! It's just as beautiful and relaxing now as it was then.
There are theories that say this song was written by slave nurse maids. They were forced to abandon their own babies at home to come feed and care for the master's babies... So the slave babies would often die of disease and starvation. The "bees and butterflies" around its eyes would be just flies and bugs eating them. That would be why the "you", the white child, will have it all pretty things, horses and cake, while the lamb will keep crying down there

I use to play this for my daughter when she was little. I haven't heard it since then. Now I feel like crying... she's 40 years old now.
First heard this in 1963. Just watched "The Help". Could not have been a more appropriate song.
My daughter used to ask me to sing the song about “apples and grapes “😂 She never had heard of dapples and greys.
My grand daddy use to sing it to me. He'd sing and rock me to sleep when he visited us from AL. I'll never forget it .
Very sweet, my Mother would sing this to myself as well at bedtime. Have a lovely Autumn & to all the Pretty Little Horses. 🐎 ( Mrs. P)
