  • A pilot will choose to dump fuel only on very rare occasions. In the case of an emergency situation they can choose to dump, dirty up the plane or land heavy. Each has its pros and cons but here's why it's done in the first place.

      Ephesians‬ ‭6:10‭-‬18‬ ‭Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. The bible is no old book. You have to really let Christ open your eyes; to see the world in shambles. Many people say it's a religion to lock up people in chains, and say it's a rule book.. why? Because people hate hearing the truth, it hurts their flesh, it's hurts their pride, it's exposes on what things have they done..people love this world so much, s*x, money, power, women, supercars.. things of this world. Still trying to find something that can fill that emptiness in your heart. You can't find that in this world.. only in Christ, the bible is no chains, it's a chainbreaker. Breaking your sins into pieces... Repent now, and turn back to the true Lord only.. God bless.

      But they are worried about diesels but like they said.
      The .01% that planes do dump fuel is still 20 million gallons dumped in the atmosphere if that number still holds true in 2018 and even 2024. But the EPA is worried about diesels and not the 20 million gallons of jet fuel. Huh, I guess if you pay the EPA enough money, they don't care.

  • @antoinedurand737

    I’d like to add something... dumping fuel is rare because most of the time the quantity of fuel loaded in a plane is the fuel needed to do the trip he’s going to do according to the extra fuel, contingency fuel etc it has to have. Also the Boeing 737 can not dump fuel. What they actually do is flying at lower altitude or flying with flaps, landing gear to increase drag and therefore increase fuel consumption.

    • @gnranger
      @gnranger 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Or just do an overweight landing.

    • @shanehowerton9382
      @shanehowerton9382 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      737 fuel overflow vent is what I witnessed apparently. The vents (NACA ducts), located near each wing tip, provide a small positive head of pressure on the fuel in all three tanks. This prevents a vacuum forming as fuel is used, assists the fuel pumps and reduces evaporation. NB if you overfill the fuel tanks, then this is where the ensuing fuel spillage will come from!

      If they land without pooping, they will stress their bodies from the added weight and this could damage their legs or manifest itself as a problem on a future flight. They are not designed to land with a full poop load. It is expensive to poop mid flight and studies are inconclusive about the risks to health. The poop is meant to vaporise but sometimes it reaches the ground and lands on ur face. They should only poop mid flight when absolutely necessary.

    It sure doesn't dump thousands of pounds per second. The 777's fuel jettison system takes roughly 30 minutes to dump from a heavy fuel load (130 tons) down to max landing weight, and it varies the dump rate to respect center-of-gravity limitation while all that weight is being moved around. It also leaves about 1 ton above max landing weight to account for your fuel burn on the subsequent approach and landing.
    We're trained to aim for max landing weight if time permits, or if not, 300,000KG works for an overweight landing. The landing gear can take the 'abuse' if needed, as in the case of a critically ill passenger.

    The design is based on maximum landing weight. And the regulations are very detailed. As the professor said in a inflight emergency all bets are off and if a overweight landing is done then so be it. Landing overweight can also have the potential for structural damage reduced by flying a much shallower approach angle and controlling the descent rate. Basically you are very gentle on the throttle and flight controls and very very carefully monitor the approach speed and angle.
    It is also possible that some aircraft will need to burn off fuel but that can take a very long time especially with heavier international flights with not only heavy aircraft but heavy fuel loads. That’s when the question becomes of whether it is a emergency after all. You can circle several hours burning down to max land weight especially if there is no fuel jettison system on the aircraft. There will be many questions and lots of paperwork to fill out so Captains are very cautious of this fact. Some are no brainers like fire, loss of engine and some medical issues. Some are not quite so much. In the case of a heavily fueled international flight the problem itself might not be an emergency but the restrictions for the scenario might be DO NOT Enter ETOPS airspace. That restriction is common due to the potential of problem getting worse and being in the pre-verbial...”No Mans Land” between the oceans. Even though the aircraft may be certified for flight with loss of engine or system that scenario is based on the problem happening while I. The middle of the ocean. If you haven’t entered the ETOPS and are on either side of the ocean (Atlantic for Example. If the problem develops in the middle than fly to either side and land. If you are not up to the ETOPS area yet most airlines, aircraft manufacturers and regulatory agencies prefer you not risk it. Yes you can spend five or six maybe more hours holding offshore of the origin country and wind up back to the original airport where you came from. Depending on the airline and logistics it might be better to return back to origin airport.
    Example a British Airways flight from London to the US having a problem might elect to return to London for repair and passenger accommodation. The same scenario for United or Delta flight leaving the US for Europe might elect back to the US origin airport.
    When you are passed what is called the Equal Time Point then you are pretty committed to one side or the other. ETP is the point where it is the same amount of time and distance to go back to Landfall whichever side you are on. Note I said landfall which basically means a runway suitable for that aircraft. It might not be origin but a safe landing airport and runway. A Lufthansa flight from Germany to the US might divert to Ireland. A United flight to Europe might divert to Canada or the Maritime Provinces (Gander, Goose Bay, Halifax etc. This doesn’t fix the problem but gets the aircraft safely on deck then worry about the passenger accommodation....Rescue flight, return back to US/Europe etc...

      @@jaedenmarsh1156 they also said that 2million gallons a year a dumped... thats a lot. sure its not always for some grandma, often i'm sure its because of weather. but i'm saying a 60 y/o grandma with health problem is no reason to be so financially wasteful and environmentally destructive.
      and yes, if it was my mom, i'd have the same feelings; if it was me, same deal. human life is not that precious - our planet IS.

  • @ChaJ67

    I thought there was the deal where it takes longer for the plane to stop when too much fuel is onboard. If it takes longer to stop than you have runway for, that is bad. I remember the documentary on the Quantas A380 uncontained engine failure mentioned one of the flight crew calculating how much runway they needed to stop the plane as they were fueled up for a long haul flight and they needed a long runway to stop with their heavy fuel load. I remember hearing they stopped within 100m of the calculated distance. For example wouldn't want to land at Midway airport in the Chicago area, especially in the winter time with an overweight plane. The last time I landed there in the winter time the pilot gruffly plopped the plane down at the outer edge of the runway after a steep descent with the speed brakes on (barely flared at all), then took the whole length of the runway braking hard with the thrust reversers roaring like I have never heard them roar before only to make a sharp, fast turn at the other end of the runway before slowing down the rest of the way. Especially a place like there if it takes longer to stop because there is too much fuel on the plane, you are just going to slide off the end of the runway. (And planes have been known to slide off the end of the runway there, at least in the winter time.)

      @davidpalmer9780 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes... that was Qantas flight 32 out of Singapore. The crew did a good job to land the aircraft safely will all onboard but more credit must go to the Airbus A380 engineers and designers who created an aircraft capable of withstanding such a catastrophic engine failure and landing safe without it losing control, breaking up and falling from the sky.

    Safety comes first. Even if it were illegal if the pilot could justify it for the safety of the aircraft they likely wouldn't get into trouble with the FAA. As for their airline that's a different story. That $20k in fuel may have been picked up by an insurance company but it may have also just been eaten by the airline.

      Contrails. At certain altitudes and certain conditions, any airplane leaves condensation trails, visible in WWII shots of planes that didn’t have jet engines or fuel jettison. If you’ve ever seen what looks like a drop of rust on your car that just wipes away, that’s jettisoned fuel.
