    "i walked away from this song thinking...it was a varied song and so much happening that it was disjointed but.....everything was different but the same."
    Alright everyone. Pack it up and head on home, we did it. Bryan understands prog metal now!

    Great reaction! I've been a fan of Haken for a long time, and this song does pack a lot of what they're about all at once. The time sigs are definitely all over the place, but if you listen you can keep a constant eighth note pulse going throughout the whole song (think like the song is just a bunch of measures of 1/8). Transitions in prog to me sound less harsh when the subdivision and tempo stays the same. You mentioned the internal metronome, and that's exactly what a lot of modern prog implies in their arrangements. Carousel is an interesting track, I go back and forth between really being into it or not being into it at all. If you're gonna try more Haken, I'd suggest 1985 for a more creative and digestible prog arrangement, or Pareidolia for a long track that's a bit smoother and has a lot of dynamics. Thanks for checking them out again! Always love to see them on the channel!

      I found Virus to be a good album, but missed the dynamics you mention. I loved all the call backs to their older stuff and the writing is obviously fantastic. Curious to see what they do next! They’ll always be a fav for me.

    The last section of the song (from 7:48 in this video) always reminds me of a storm coming, first with light drops slowly building to a full on tempest by the end. Love it.

    Really good analysis! They do tend to have abrupt time changes but I really enjoy how they are all over the place. I think the over all sound of their riffs and creativeness got me hooked on them.

    I've come to this channel for reactions for quite a while now, and I always appreciate the consistency in regards to smoother transitions between opposing sections. The lyrics throughout this album were strange, as there are multiple songs (including this one) that focus heavily on common idioms and sayings. Not just using them, but inverting and subverting them. Thought it was an interesting choice, but generally makes any sort of sense throughout the album hard to follow.

    Reacting to Prog is a bit of a minefield because in all honesty most Prog music, whether it's good or great, takes a few listens to really sink into properly. There's so much going on with bands like Haken or DT that it can definitely feel disjointed, chaotic, or overwhelming. And that's only compounded by songs like this from a concept album where you've got motifs and call-backs to other bits off the album. Like, it's deliberate that it's full of "smash cuts" because that's part of the overall story and feel that the album is giving you.
    Honestly, I'm super biased because I bloody love Haken. But I think given the long list of things you liked about the song it would definitely be worth spending a bit more time with the song, and ideally, the album. Either way, great reaction as always Bryan.

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yup. And I hope people understand that when they listen to my thoughts. The longer and more dense a song is the less depth I'll pick up on a first listen. That doesn't always translate to a weaker analysis section but it does give me less concrete ideas to explore, providing only a surface level read of the song. But I hope that, even in that shallow look, I still find some stuff or can explain it in musical terms that gives both newcomers and fans of the track/band something to think about.

    Also, I want to say I love the fact that you let us know if you did or did not enjoy a song. So many of these "reaction" videos channels are never critical of anything. It's so obvious they just enjoy the views from metalheads. They ALWAYS praise the music to keep the viewers coming back to watch more, and hear exactly what they want to hear. I enjoy the fact that you have some god damn integrity.

      Thanks man! I've probably lost some potential subscribers due to speaking my mind but I stand by it for the exact reasons you talk about. Not everyone has to enjoy everything they hear and the narrative pushed otherwise isn't healthy for the artists or the fans.

    If you enjoy Haken, you should definitely check out Novena! It features Haken's lead singer as well as members of slice the cake. My go to tracks would be "The Tyrant" (there's a nice live at home performance if that song) and "a stopped clock".

    For my ear everything comes together, I can follow how the ideas are flowing into eachother. It think the transitions are a lot better than Dream Theater, though I also really like Dream Theater. Maybe it's just something I'm used to, placebo, or could be taste.

  • @jonathanhenderson9422
    @jonathanhenderson9422 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Not my favorite from them--in general I prefer the material from their first three albums to their last three--but it's still really good modern prog. I think my issue with their last three albums is that they went from being a rather original prog rock band drawing influences from many of the more obscure classic prog bands (like Gentle Giant) to being a more generic prog metal band... and I only say "generic" in comparison with their earlier work that sounded more original to my ears. Still by no means a bad track, but I do agree about it not cohering really well.

    • @ckokomo808
      @ckokomo808 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’d agree. I find myself gravitating to The Mountain, Affinity, Restoration and Visions.
      Like you said, their music is great but it doesn’t have the same eclectic nature as their older music did. They sound like a modern dream theater with modern “djent” effects. I miss the varied dynamics in instrumental tones.
      Definitely excited to hear what they put out next!

    Every single second of affinity was exciting and thrilling for me. Mindblowing, phenomenal album. This just isn’t. It’s like they’ve put different time signatures in just to be clever and not because it feels good or it serves the song. Hardly played Vector and only just listening to Virus. A lot of us Haken fans felt similar about their latest album, Virus, that while the music, while very good, is disjointed, and awkward and thus doesn’t stick quite like a lot of Haken does. Its too eclectic to the point where it really doesn’t have a cohesive nature, which is really what I search for. Their album Affinity mostly incredibly nailed a grand cohesive piece by songs and as by the whole album.
