I still miss Glenn Gould's polyphonic singing tone and his miraculous left hand. It sounded so free, so uplifting and miraculous, you could feel it was free and that singing between the voices he had. Unfortunately he never recorded this transcription as an adult.

Trifonov is not "mannered". There is nothing posed here. He is a consummate artist who is immersed in - totally absorbed by - the music. And I think Bach, and certainly Liszt, would be pleased to have their music endure and be expressed through such an artist.

Incredible, deeply understood and realized. With gentle touch . No one up to date play so sensible this ,,double,, Fantasy and fugue. Especially full orchestra sounds through the bars, timely from 9.20 to 9.35 sec. Unrepeatable!!
On dirait que cette musique vient d'un autre monde, de l'autre monde. Les accords sont d'une audace inouïe, même aujourd'hui. On est transporté dans une dimension parallèle, dans laquelle la médiocrité, la bêtise et la méchanceté ont disparu. Un monde dans lequel tout le mal a disparu, car il n'a plus rien à offrir. On ressent la présence de Dieu, toute sa puissance et sa force qui balaye tout sur son passage. Le mystère divin, palpable. Magnifique Trifonov, totalement habité. Il n'est plus sur la terre. "La musique creuse le ciel" disait Baudelaire. Bravo et respect aux compositeurs !

Trifonov est superbe ici, en vrai professionnel je pense quand même qu'il surjoue un peu son rôle d'acteur auquel tout pianiste a droit, c'est aussi ce qu'on attend d'un artiste, cela ajoute beaucoup à la performance, en tout cas j'ai apprécié.
What a delight, a delicate performance that brings tenderness, and power, into a performance that otherwise would be difficult to achieve with an organ or pedal harpsichord.
@@organboi Maybe you're not listening correctly. His voicing is distinctive in my opinion. I'm pretty sure someone like Daniil would understand something as basic as the voices of a fugue.
@@defunesfan There are many themes in both the Fantasy and especially the Fugue where they intertwine. Separate from the piece as a whole, each sub theme is played , in my mind, in perfect balance, like the individual brush strokes of the Mona Lisa ( OK I got a little carried away there). My mind marched off on one thread of his playing, only to be brought back to the rest of the piece without feeling I'd missed a step.
A perfect example of what I think about music : it isn't made to be listened to. It is made to be lived and felt. He must have made all his music teachers cry with his unorthodox posture at the piano, but seriously : when you see, hear, and feel this... who would dare complain that he's not sitting 200% straight ?Love his body expression nearly as much as his music. Thanks soooooo much, Mr Trifonov. That was worth Go(u)ld !! ;)

Who else plays Liszt's transcription of BWV 542 like this? Particularly noteworthy is Trifonov's wonderful transparent rendering of the Fantasy. Pratically all other pianists can't seem to avoid drowning the whole thing in a sea of blur and rumbling. Daniil Trifonov clearly shows he has a huge lot to give to the world as interpreter of J.S. Bach. Having proven beyond a shred of a doubt he is a true virtuoso through his recordings of Rachmaninoff, Liszt and Chopin, nothing stands in his way now to record J.S. Bach. Incidently, he has scheduled BWV 1080 for concerts in various cities as part of his 2020 concert tour. By the way: the sound quality of this BWV 542 at Carnegie is really good. A wonderful piano sound, so wonderful indeed that - in my personal opinion - it even surpasses the organ original.

Il possède la musique de Bach comme si on la lui avait inoculée par intra veineuse. Mais c'est magnifique. On en est à la quintessence. C'est indiscutablement un très grand interprète, mais lorsqu'il joue Bach, il est transfiguré. Magnifique. Indispensable. Merveilleux.
J'écoute Trifonov en boucle lorsqu'il interprète des oeuvres de Bach, même transcrites, cette fantaisie et fugue est un pur chef d'oeuvre. Trifonov y met une telle conviction qu'on est pris littéralement aux tripes, comme lorsqu'il joue Chaconne Bach-Brahms, pour main gauche. Celui qui ne pleure pas d'émotion n'a peut-être pas compris toute la dimension d'une telle musique et d'un tel génie qu'est Bach auquel il faut adjoindre le génie pianistique de Trifonov qui vous fait oublier que cette oeuvre est primitivement écrite pour orgue. Le piano vibre comme ce n'est pas possible sous la pression des doigts de Trifonov. On oublie tout en écoutant les montées en musique de cette partition sublime. C'est une pure splendeur.
Trifonov's version of Mozart's Fantasy is my favorite.. And now I have one more favorite to give to him! An exemplary pianist, who is not afraid to show his feelings while playing, totally free and spontaneous!
Exactly, these are the expressions of a mature and great musician: sincere and so full of emotion. Not bordering on the ridicule like Lang Lang’s circus.
I love this music and this interpretation. Bach and Liszt together, they are always a great combination. Trifonov, like Gould and other pianists, either likes or dislikes. But his exciting dedication to music and his very personal interpretations should be recognized. Personally, I like him very much, he is very communicative and expressive.
Bach would be sooooooo happy with your performance! This is one of my all time favorite fugues and your expression, dynamics, .... really will affect people for generations.

В свою очередь пианист Трифонов исполняет произведение очень эффектно и стилистически не "обидев" Баха. К этому видео хочется возвращаться, оно не надоедает.Спасибо!

Bonjour, je pense que ce n'est pas parce que Liszt en a fait la transcription - même très enrichie par rapport à l'original - que c'est devenu une "œuvre romantique" ... "Romantique avant la lettre" ? alors c'est classique ... Classique comme Mendelssohn qui écrivit aussi une œuvre très classique, ou même post-baroque que Bach n'aurait pas reniée !
His sense of rhythm is phenomenal. It's one of the hallmarks of great pianists. I love his performance and his dedication. That said, i would sometimes give the left hand prominence over the right hand which it seems very few pianist are comfortable in doing. He does it but not always when i want. As for example @9:28 that right hand is less interesting than the left. But then his theatricals are amazingly accurate to the music. it's total devotion and sincerity from this grand artist which i respect immensely.
This sounds like the organ performances of the work. Conservative, nothing crazy. Wonderful arrangement by Liszt. I can almost hear the colors of the different pipes in fugue.
@@peterectasy2957 I personally really dislike this sort of sound! Different strokes I guess. I actually omit the octave notes and reduce the bass to single lines because tours-de-forces and grandeur just turn me right off. Maximum 4 notes at once for me 😅
@@angryjalapeno It's just my personal taste of sound. Not a fan of bashing big chords, sweeping arpeggios and the like, I just love counterpoint really.
Il y a toute la poigne, la conviction comprise dans cette fantaisie et fugue de Bach. C'est remarquable. Liszt y a mis toute sa croyance qui l'a conduit jusqu'à la prêtrise. Manque bien entendu la dimension de l'orgue qui donne tout le relief à cette oeuvre immense. Mais, Danii Trifonov n'y est pour rien ni son piano qu'il fait vibrer de façon magnifique. Voilà une transcription qui est allé jusqu'au bout de ses possibilités et que Bach n'aurait certainement pas renié.
Since I have heard this performance, I cannot get rid of the impression, that this this is exactly the way both, Bach and List, had envision this masterpiece to be played... Everything else in the world has a little significance... One of the best masterpieces by J. S. Bach (you just have to listen it original) translated by the other genius - F. List...

For anyone interested, Trifonov gives an all-Bach (transcriptions plus the Art of the Fugue) on March 3 at Alice Tully Hall. I checked and it is (of course) sold out but I think there is a waiting register.

интересно, вроде вы фугу так же оцениваете, как и фантазию? Фантазия - это полет, это Космос. Возможно, самое гениальное произведение во всей истории музыки. Фуга на ее фоне , ИМХО, совершенно "не смотрится". Как бы Бах гениально ни импровизировал, надо признать, что в основе ее лежит примитивный мотивчик а-ля "в траве сидел кузнечик". И с этим ничего не поделаешь.
Trifonov no esta tocando el piano. Lo esta seduciendo, lo acaricia, lo mira con ojos de pasion casi contenida, desliza sus dedos sobre las teclas como si fuera la mujer amada. A veces suave y tierno, a veces firme y decidido, a veces fuerte y arrebatado. Y como en toda seduccion bien hecha la fusion es irremediable, no se puede detener. El piano responde de la misma manera a sus pretensiones. El resultado es una maravilla.
You have a kind of playing and live like Gould on the piano. And I love it. I also use the same kind of feel the music and I will never change it because you have a complete different view on the music with that.
I wished Gould had recorded this late in his career. I miss his singing tone. Trifonov is other worldly here, excellent control of tone and beautifully crafted colors and articulations. This is the best recording of this transcription on the piano but the legato approach that Trifonov is using suffers from some held notes or accents that Gould detached polyphonic technique overcame. His sound was free and singing and transcendantal. Here you can sometimes feel the difficulty of the piece that you would never with Gould. The problem is that nobody has Gould's unorthodox technique. Adding to my original comment, on the other side of the coin, Gould's technique was not suited for legato romantic playing which includes Chopin or Rachmaninov. One more comment, is Trifonov should have played this on a Bosendorfer. Gould tweaked his steinway a lot to make it more polyphonic friendly, also his technique was able to sing through Steinway's opaque saturated sound.

What a great Liszt’s adaptation of this masterpiece. Originally written on organ and this sounds as it was played on organ.

Все прекрасно, только ужимки и прыжки исполнителя напрягают. Органисты - за редким исключением - такого себе не позволяют

@@peterectasy2957 I personally really dislike this sort of sound! Different strokes I guess. I actually omit the octave notes and reduce the bass to single lines because tours-de-forces and grandeur just turn me right off. Maximum 4 notes at once for me 😅

Il y a toute la poigne, la conviction comprise dans cette fantaisie et fugue de Bach. C'est remarquable. Liszt y a mis toute sa croyance qui l'a conduit jusqu'à la prêtrise. Manque bien entendu la dimension de l'orgue qui donne tout le relief à cette oeuvre immense. Mais, Danii Trifonov n'y est pour rien ni son piano qu'il fait vibrer de façon magnifique. Voilà une transcription qui est allé jusqu'au bout de ses possibilités et que Bach n'aurait certainement pas renié.
Cette musique ne vient pas de la terre.

For anyone interested, Trifonov gives an all-Bach (transcriptions plus the Art of the Fugue) on March 3 at Alice Tully Hall. I checked and it is (of course) sold out but I think there is a waiting register.

интересно, вроде вы фугу так же оцениваете, как и фантазию? Фантазия - это полет, это Космос. Возможно, самое гениальное произведение во всей истории музыки. Фуга на ее фоне , ИМХО, совершенно "не смотрится". Как бы Бах гениально ни импровизировал, надо признать, что в основе ее лежит примитивный мотивчик а-ля "в траве сидел кузнечик". И с этим ничего не поделаешь.
Прекрасное, трогательное исполнение, лучший из современных молодых пианистов. Рад за русскую школу.

Trifonov no esta tocando el piano. Lo esta seduciendo, lo acaricia, lo mira con ojos de pasion casi contenida, desliza sus dedos sobre las teclas como si fuera la mujer amada.
A veces suave y tierno, a veces firme y decidido, a veces fuerte y arrebatado. Y como en toda seduccion bien hecha la fusion es irremediable, no se puede detener. El piano responde de la misma manera a sus pretensiones. El resultado es una maravilla.
You have a kind of playing and live like Gould on the piano. And I love it. I also use the same kind of feel the music and I will never change it because you have a complete different view on the music with that.

I wished Gould had recorded this late in his career. I miss his singing tone. Trifonov is other worldly here, excellent control of tone and beautifully crafted colors and articulations. This is the best recording of this transcription on the piano but the legato approach that Trifonov is using suffers from some held notes or accents that Gould detached polyphonic technique overcame. His sound was free and singing and transcendantal. Here you can sometimes feel the difficulty of the piece that you would never with Gould. The problem is that nobody has Gould's unorthodox technique.
Adding to my original comment, on the other side of the coin, Gould's technique was not suited for legato romantic playing which includes Chopin or Rachmaninov.
One more comment, is Trifonov should have played this on a Bosendorfer. Gould tweaked his steinway a lot to make it more polyphonic friendly, also his technique was able to sing through Steinway's opaque saturated sound.
