- This is a compilation video pieced together with footage recorded by a videographer on our trip and two GoPros mounted to myself.
The Gauley River is only open six weekends each year, when the Summersville dam, in southern West Virginia, performs its yearly water release. For those six weekends, the Upper Gauley is one of the top whitewater destinations in the world rated at a Class V river.

Its 3 a.m. can't sleep. Thank you..what a wonderful adventure...
This video is totally under veiwed and underrated...
Very Well done!!
😊 Thank you
Have done the upper galley 10 times. Never seen anybody hit pillow rock like you guys did!
Foxy box of kittens has another name “ Guides revenge”
Bwahahaha!! That makes a whole lotta sense now!! 🤣🤣
The guide's description of going in at Pillow Rock was right on. I had the "pleasure" of going in last month. Yeah, one & done. It was a great day but I don't feel the need to do it again.
I’ve never rafted and I’m going to do upper Gauley first time. I’m shitting myself. Will I be ok?
@@EllisAndrews-t4e I wouldn't suggest the Upper if you've never been rafting before. Go with the Lower Gauley or lower New. Both are pretty exciting
Go with a guide that knows the river, how to avoid the dumb mistakes, and you'll want to return again. This "guide" does not reflect the caliber of guides you'll find on the Upper Gauley...
I've rafted quite a few times and have watched many videos, this one is the best!!
We ran this last week. Pretty awesome.
SUPER fun video to watch! I just had my first ever rafting trip on the Deschutes...it was all class 3 and below, except for one class 4 that they snuck in on us. I was terrified to go but had the best time and can't wait to go again!
I like how to guide tries to blame the pillow rock dump truck on your undermotivated and over motivated paddling when really he just had a bad line
My husband used to raft in Colorado and says your guide is an idiot. I will say he's definitely not as funny as he thinks he is.
I think you’re talking about the angle not the line. The angel was fine to spin off and finish the A line. You can see them stop paddling plus their stance and strokes weren’t proper. Not a big deal. They aren’t guides, they’re just there to have fun. Guides aren’t going to be mad at them for low effort unless it’s a serious risk
This guide purposefully took the dump line at Pillow just because he can. This company has the worst safety record on the Gauley, and I'm talking about multiple deaths... Do some research.
@@jacobbell1934 a good guild doesn't play silly games on class 5+ rapids
@@jam7547 these aren’t that serious
dude, I rafted this river like 3 days before this in Sept 2020! my boat captain wore a sunoco gas station attendant shirt 🤣 jersey turnpike had my back I was never worried. we cruised everything no sweat but it was big obstacles that day. I watched as the boat behind us got amplitude and flipped over the iron ring rapid. we had to paddle back and pull survivors into our boat. then on the way back, the bus driver was ripping it through the mountain in the schoolbus. motorcycle almost ran head-on into us but somehow he skidded and popped back up and didnt die all happening at like 40+ mph (watched it unfold out the window). was an insane day 🤣
All the rapids are Class 4, except for Iron Ring, they are just trying to make you feel better, or they really suck! Look up Cherry Creek, a real class 5+
Pillow rock.was guides fault
If your guide says he's aiming right for Pillow Rock, you might ask yourself why you chose this rafting company.
I have rafted and kayaked 10 years will never used this company.. class 5+ is not a toy to be played 😢
@@jam7547Fact: this company has the most fatalities on this river...
The wife and I did the lower new recently it was awesome. Maybe one day we will try the Gauley. Not thrilled about the colder water really though
You won't even notice it with your adrenaline pumpin. Go run it, Man!
Watching from GrandMa
I just don't do this without 5 people who are ridiculous strong paddlers that I totally trust.
yes I have a strict idea about river safety...i had a friend die on a class 5 rapid
Show put in from dam poring out water done it will try it again Keith m ohio 😎😎😎👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
What is the best time to raft? Would September be ok?
Yes. The Corps of Engineers has scheduled releases from Summersville dam in September. It's also usually fairly warm weather then.
Luar biasa keren
bumper boats lol
1 more comment if you have not gone down west virgina river stop watching NASCAR. L.o.l. now ya all a team pattel hard hope get back this year keith m. Ohio 😎😎😎🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Manta
Fanny!
This is not class 5!
This is class 3 and 4!
Class 5 have big, big waves!
It’s class 5
Class 5 isn’t just about big waves but the technical part of rafting it.
@@jacobbell1934Guided there since 76. Back then it was considered Class 5, but as skills and equipment has gotten better it's not Class 5 and definitely not 5+ as the video shows...
@@Michael65429that doesn’t make any sense dude. Classes are based off of technique/maneuvering, water flow, as well as wave size AND risk to life/obstacles. I wouldn’t want you taking me down the Gauley with that sort of attitude lol
class 5 rapids are not toys. don't risk the safety of your padders.. find the best safeline and best angle and go for it
guy talks too much lol
