Physics and mathematics seem to be in a pre-established harmony, as Gottfried Leibniz observed long ago. New ideas generated by mathematical researchers have often proved to be essential to physicists trying to discover the most basic laws of nature. Likewise, physicists have often generated new insights into advanced mathematics. This event explores the astonishingly productive relationship between physics and mathematics and explores whether these disciplines might one day unify, perhaps leading to a giant structure that encompasses all the laws that describe the underlying workings of the universe.

Graham Farmelo was magnificent - and spoke in a way that humanities graduates could understand. What a performance! Buy his book!
An inspiring author and speaker. I can only hope to develop such an understanding of both the theory and historical basis of physics!

The universe does not “speak” through math. This is the main issue I have with math. People think it does, but it’s like the computers we use. They are constructed with math. But if we didn’t know about computers then the math involved would only be how the computer was constructed.
I believe everything “speaks” not just, or even primary, math. Even Shannon information is not something we can compress into a simple algorithm. Let’s get real about this. Even Michio Kaku says that there will be a “god” equation. One inch long. Lol.
So yeah it’s difficult to speak to people about the real “speaking” of the universe when their own notions are so inconsistent and twisted up with background “grammar” issues.
Otherwise I loved this talk. So interesting 🤔 🥰

@@oStauros in this instance, I think how you feel governs the way you think and what you do.. then what you think and do governs the world around you, your luck etc.. that’s just within us.. 9..3,6...1,2,4,5,7,8.. applys to everything.. I’m not all the way there yet but I’m close.. all the information isn’t all in one place for us.. we have to apply our own methods to life and see for ourselves what works and what doesn’t, then refer back to this stuff and it makes more sense..

Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang often wears a baseball with just the words, "Math". He has qualified for the next debates limited to ten candidates. I predict he will be referred to as the Newton of 2020. (However, that will not propel him to the presidency in 2020. Nevertheless, the die is cast for success by a math candidate in X years.)
Ps, he has no math degree but his father received his doctorate in physics.
