  • Perytons are magical creatures that appear to be a cross between a giant eagle and a demonic-looking, fang-toothed stag. They are known and feared for tearing the beating hearts from their victims' chests

    I’m thinking about using them as the prized pets of a lich, called the Queen of Hearts. She has them collect the hearts of humanoids for her. She decorates with them and keeps them magically pumping. Unique hearts are her prized possessions. She feeds them the common hearts that they bring to her. Her phylactory is the Heart of Ashardalon, which she has as the centerpiece of a grand chandelier, that has the still-beating hearts of smaller creatures decorating it like the crystals on more normal chandeliers.

    Just a few ideas:
    -A tribe of goblins that ride perytons
    -A hag that uses perytons as 'hunting dogs'
    -A flock of harpies allies with a flock of perytons.
    -Fiendish perytons that not only rip out the heart of their victims but their soul as well.

    First comment I've made since subscribing to your channel. Can't get a group together to play since my father died (we had a 14year long campaign before his passing😁) so this helps so much. Him and I use to read the monster manual all the time and just read and buy every used book from eBay we could get our hands on for a reasonable price. We read gaming books and novels from forgotten realms all the time starting when I was very young. I loved him reading books to me or just stories he made up himself--he was the best story teller ever! (us Irish and Seminole native American have good oral traditions and storytelling skills in our blood lol, especially my dad! Best DM EVER!) so all these videos help me fall asleep at night or enjoy riding the train in the morning or waiting for a bus coming home. I'm currently homeless though things are getting better... I'm tenntively just recently living with a husband and wife on their couch, waiting for my disability (SSDI I worked all my life prior to sickness and surgeries of which I need several more- I'm not a lazy mooch- I've paid in all I could before this happened a couple years ago not being able to walk for over a year and in a nursing home for over a year and a half which was hell and was in a very bad place which i made several complaints before and after leaving). This channel truly helps keep my spirits up and be able to go somewhere else during bad things and when my PTSD gets bad. It brings my dad back to me in a way since he'd have loved this channel too! I could totally see us listening to your channel all the time together if he were still here. Thank you for all you do. Once I'm no loner surviving by panhandling and have my SSDI I will definitely be contributing to your patron. I'm just sorry I can't now. I'm grateful for all you do! Keep it up! It truly helps me through everyday!

    A vampire might strike up a deal with a mating pair as well. Hearts from his dead thralls in exchange for protection during the day. They might be slightly smaller/weaker from generations of mateings with blood drained hearts.

    Fascinating, the Cloud Giant entry in the Monster Manual mentions that Cloud Giant nobles keep Perytons the way human nobles keep falcons and other raptors, a hunting bird of prey. There's a scary thought. Adventurers see a pair of Perytons, and think they are just going to raid the nest, and instead of a nest they find the Cloud Giant rookery.
    .
    .
    .
    And then you mention that you could see giants raising Perytons like humans do falcons.

    Love the idea of a peryton as a greater steed mount for a Conquest Paladin. Leaving enemy scouts with their hearts removed out in the open for the opposing army to discover is exactly the kind of thing that a Conquest pally would do.

    A thing that people in the comments ignore: in-canon and in IRL lore, there's no taming a peryton, no bending it to your will without magic. They are ineffably independent, forces born of our darker nature, and not just 'monsters' - much like the wendigo, treating them as just monsters (or worse, as stat blocks) is a waste of what their lore and 'true' ecology provides.

  • @draughtoflethe
    @draughtoflethe 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Another interesting origin story I've seen for the peryton (from White Wolf's Bygone Bestiary supplement for the original World of Darkness's Dark Ages setting) is that they were (or are) spirits of vengeance, and their human shadow is the murder victim that the peryton seeks to avenge, or alternately that of the murderer they're hunting. It's an idea that could lead to some interesting adventures.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Makes a lot of sense actually, and in D&D plots, the Peryton could be an alternative to a haunting undead, a spirit of vengeance that is very hard to kill (give the creature the ability to become intangible, for instance) until the murderer is found and justice is done.

    Hello, I would like to see your take on a little known/used monster that is a favourite of mine:
    Obliviax (memory moss).
    As a DM I have used Obliviax many times to befuddle a party. I have used it as a "Memento" style plot device, forcing players to leave clues for themselves to solve a mystery each day as they lose their memories. I have used it as a level boss forcing the players to unknowingly re-do the same dungeon level over and over again. I have sneaked it into players food so that consumption of the moss reveals the next stage in the plot line. An infestation of Obliviax can create a "Groundhog Day" effect on an entire town, injecting a certain weirdness or comedic element into the game.
    As a player Mage I have used it to steal spells from other Magi to fill my spell book. I have also used Obliviax as a way to cast multiple spells in a round.
    As a Rogue I have used it to steal information, to cover-up a crime, tamper with witnesses or to plant false memories and guilt in an innocent mind.
    As a component in the creation of magical items that cause memory loss, drain or store spells, Obliviax is a very valuable and powerful item.

    A magic bow confers its magic on its ammunition in almost every edition. So a magic bow can still harm them, but most players don’t think bows are good weapons.

    " .. Nice .. uhm, .. Rack ! "
    Honestly such a creature will draw big game sport trophy hunters from across the world.
    Look at the industry built on deer, elk, mountain lion, and bear hunting in North America.
    If their antler is anywhere as tough as iron or a mix of pure iron ( micro dust ) and normal antler material weapon smiths will be after the peryton rack for blade creations.

    hey thanks for that but I have a question, could you skin it and gain an immunity to simple non magic weapons? If you wore it like a cloak. And I think at the end of each video give a HINT to what the next thing is ,but not tell us.

    • @kyliepoe6231

      I had a pc in an Arctic campaign who had a winter wolf made into boots of the winter lands (which he threatened to do to the beast during combat, as it was the faithful pet of the head villain) I still paid for them to be made into a magic item as usual, but their origin made them a token of war and more special all the same. Just food for thought.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With the Peryton, it would make a pretty slick looking feathered cloak, though the smell of it would be undesirable, and it would confer, at best, a slight bonus to AC. Perytons have a tough hide over their whole body, and enhanced skeletal structure for added toughness. I do like the idea though :)Also, hints, I can do that... though I just posted the entire list for my patreon subscribers..

    • @walterbunn280
      @walterbunn280 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ehh... It's not without merit, but I think I'd push it as a superior material for making a medium or light armor in 5th edition; perhaps giving advantage to artisans crafting those types of items, and maybe providing some small AC bonus based on an inherent quality of the material.
      3rd edition had superior raw materials and it was quite interesting.
      As for why it's not straight out immunity, the effect simply isn't as strong once the creature is dead. It requires the passive, living energies of the creature to maintain the non-magical strength in a manner similar to how some creatures lose access to magical abilities once they die or change their nature in someway (alignment changes, template changes in other editions could do this, etc... ).
      It also could have drawbacks to balance out "Non-magical Immunity". It's already been noted that, mechanically speaking, it could hurt charisma, but Constitution or strength could also be negatively impacted to balance out the advantage (since smells can indicate a disease or illness in the creature). Finding a good balance point with the lore and game play in mind is extremely important when you allow/introduce something like that to a game.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They would certainly follow a tribe of Barbarians or humanoids who don't settle permanently anywhere. So it could be that the first clue that a large tribe of humanoids have moved into the area.. more perytons!

    I'm curious that you say you wouldn't find them in groups, especially if they are derived from carrion birds it seems logical that one might come upon a flock gathered around some kind of carcass, or holed up in an area. I could see them hunting live humanoids in a more solitary manner though, if it is part of their mating procedure. Even then it might be cool to have your party stalked by a flock of Peryton, particularly at night when you can see those red eyes gathered in the darkness, waiting for adventurers to fall asleep or become otherwise distracted. They also seem like a species that might be generally uncommon, but might suddenly have a big population spike following some kind of mass death, i.e. war, disease, etc. Where there are suddenly many humanoid corpses to take hearts from. Perhaps they can tolerate scavenging carrion in groups, but prefer to hunt live prey on their own, lacking true pack tactics. I might play a larger herd of these in a campaign as a swarm with minion rules, the idea of them circling overhead like vultures is very appealing to me. If I do that I will probably have a Peryton Matriarch that is considerably more dangerous, does anyome have any thoughts on how to enhance her abilities? I like the concept of their glowing eyes, and was thinking of giving her a gaze attack, either to charm humanoid or confer exhaustion levels, both of which will probably be easy saves but will have to be checked repeatedly for each round the gaze is sustained

    speaking as a biologist, these creatures seem doomed to extinction, and for the same reason as the horror movie zombie: their primary prey creature, humans, is also their top predator and means of reproduction. Imagine if us real life humans had to fight a lion every time we wanted to have sex or make a sandwich, except the lion has a sword and a suit of armor.
