Love the albums when Detlev Schmidtchen was playing keyboards. (Dawn, Ocean, Silent Cries) That gave the sound of the band the "magic touch". In that era they were very successful in Germany and sold lots of records. But the critics hated the band. Eloy bashing was a "must" for them. Indeed this band was really killed by the critics. So I am very pleased to see here the first fair review of the work of the band in my life.
I've been a Eloy fan since Planets (pushing 40 years) and love em to death! 1. Ocean 2. Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes 3. Floating 4. Inside 5. Dawn 6. Power and the Passion 7. Planets 8. Eloy 9. Time to Turn 10. Colours
Just found out about Eloy 3 days ago, through silent cries and mighty echoes, sounds epic, was hoping pete would have an album ranking and so this is a wonderful treat
Here's another band that I've really tried to get into, but never did. It's been many years but once again, due to your videos, I will revisit this catalog. Same story with Wishbone Ash...your ranking the albums caused me to spend time with that catalog...and must say that I'm glad I did.
Eloy is a German rock band that was founded in 1969. The name of the band comes from the futuristic people "Eloi" from H.G. Wells' novel "The Time Machine". Eloy's music is often classified as progressive rock or art rock, and they are known for their conceptual albums and extended compositions. Frank Bornemann, the band's founder, singer and guitarist, has been the constant driving force behind Eloy. The band has undergone several lineup changes throughout its career. Eloy's music is often inspired by science fiction themes and philosophical concepts. Their albums such as "Ocean" (1977) and "Time to Turn" (1982) are recognized as classics of progressive rock. The band has broken up and reunited several times over the years, and their musical direction has evolved over time, incorporating elements of hard rock, symphonic rock and even electronic music. Eloy has had a significant impact on the German rock scene and is often considered one of the most important bands in the history of progressive rock in Germany.
This band is highly highly underrated and was overshadowed by other bands of their time. But really this band is absolutely killer. The Ocean album is probably their best in my opinion, its certainly my favorite. Thanks for shining light on this talented band
I love Eloy since the early 90s. I saw them two times, really a very good live band, too! Rodney Matthews painted the Metromania album cover and the versions for the english market for Planets and Time to turn.
Yeah! Thanks Pete...I'm a hugh Eloy fan...have been for many years...and as a completeist...I own their complete discography....thanks for your amazing ranking the albums series...I love it!...rock on Pete🎸🎶
Good ranking video! My 1st Eloy was also Silent Cries, bought the German import 9/12/80 then started buying the others. If they ever came to the States to play I don't know? Matthews did the artwork for Metromania.
I’m a long time Eloy listener and I can easily say: they are a very rare case of a band that all albums are good and worth listening to. They have always managed to maintain a high level in songwriting and performance, which makes any ranking an extremely difficult task, with few of them standing out a little more significantly from the others, like “Ocean”, “Silent Cries”, “Metromania” or “Dawn”
So glad you did a video covering Eloy! Such an underrated band, I really recommend them to anyone who hasn’t dwelled into them. Also Pete, you should do a video on some other German Prog Rockers, Triumvirat. Another great band that’s not talked about
I got some ELoy albums after watching Pete's prog videos, but I haven't had time to really sit down with them because of school. Had been listening to a lot of Caravan but I'll sit down and give them a good listen this week.
I love your channel. Awesome that you discuss great and lesser known bands like Eloy and BeBop Deluxe. Have you done a video on Hawkwind ? I frequently reference your channel when I am about to purchase music. Keep rocking.
Love this Band! My rank would be very similar to Pete's. As he said, newer albuns are pretty decent, so here are two honorable mentions: - Ocean 2 - The answer - The vision, the sword and the pyre - Part 1
I love episodes like this. Bands I’ve heard of, but know next to nothing about. I’ve heard Ocean and I love that, so I’ll definitely explore more of their catalogue.
Thanks a lot Pete, Finally! Is one of my favourites bands.. a little surprise that you like Power more than Ocean.. My rank is: 1-Ocean 2-Silent Cries and Mighty echoes 3-Dawn 4-Floating 5-Power and the passion 6-Planets 7-Inside 8-Colours 9-Ocean 2 10-Time to turn
My absolute #1favorite is the Colours album, easy to digest, not heavy, lots of beautiful riffs and ideas, it's a great disc as an introduction to the world of Eloy I'm sure you'll enjoy it a lot, buy it ASAP!
Now this IS interesting. I have Dawn, and have listened to Ocean, which is good too of course. Been wondering about buying another one, but rateyourmusic reveals no less than NINE albums which sound interesting, including the two i mentioned (Inside right through to Time to Turn). Colours is one i hadn't thought too seriously about, but i like it a bit mellower in my old age, i will listen to it next. I much prefer the cover art of Colours to Going for the One.
Thanks Pete for giving exposure to the magnificent Eloy. I'm a bit surprised none of their later albums featured, which will appeal to many. Neo-prog classic Metromania is in my all time top ten by any band, and Ra, Tides Return Forever and Ocean 2 are also highly recommended.
I like Eloy, sounds great, and I actually got a couple of their albums, but somehow never dug into them a lot. Need to revisit! Thanks for reminding, and ranking
I really love Eloy, and think they are unfairly overlooked. Franks vocals with that German accent is just amazing and fits their music perfectly! "Ocean" and "Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes" are my two faves with the band, but I love all of their albums.
Were close in age and found your tastes in music are very similar to mine. I just bought the Eloy album Time to Turn. I came on youtube to get a pre-listen before I get in the mail on cd...and there's one of your videos reviewing Eloy's top ten. I had to see it then. You rock Pete!!!
Yes, Rodney Matthews draw two fantastic great Eloy covers in the 70's, Planets and Time To Turn, but these were the alternate covers only for UK... Both versions for both albums are great drawings but the UK covers that Rodney did, are even better and very collectable. He also draw Metromania... Jurgen Rosenthal also wrote the lyrics for Dawn and Ocean.
Only 3 albums had Rodney Matthews artwork. They were: 'Planets, Time To Turn and Metromania'. However they were used only for the U.K. release by 'Heavy Metal Worldwide' records. The artwork on the CD's that you just shown were on the original releases. My top ten: 1. Metromania 2. Planets 3. Time to Turn 4. Colours 5. Silent Cries and Mighty Echo's 6. Ra 7. Performance 8. The Tide Returns Forever 9. Destination 10. Ocean
Fantastic band! I haven't heard all of their albums but here are my top 5. 1. Floating 2. Inside 3. Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes 4. Ocean 5. Dawn I would love to see a Nektar ranking (or top albums) too
Great german band! One of my top prog-space-symphonic rock bands of all time. Tremendous keyboards. I could also include "Performance" (1983) on this list.
@@AeWingnut No, the Germans don't know anything about Eloy. The Germans also believe that Rammstein was the first German Band to play in the sold-out Madison Square Garden. But they don't know that the Scorpions sold out Madison Square Garden for three Days in 1984. A Prophet is not without Honor save in his own Country.
How about bands like Passport or Lake, I quite like those two German '70s/80s acts, the former is obviously fushion and jazzy rock the latter more straight pop oriented almost West Coast.
Great band agree with your number one Silent Cry’s. Thanks to one of your earlier prog shows I was introduced to this lesser known top shelf prog band.
I'm late to the Eloy party, but I'm really digging Planets, Dawn and Ocean. Silent Cries seems like the one I should try next. Thanks for the info on this great band and their massive discography.
Great list. My favorite Eloy album has always been 1983's super underrated Performance. Eloy goes AOR and it just absolutely kills it while still having all their great proggy inclinations.

Eloy is such a cool hard/space/prog rock band.
The seventies clearly were their top period IMO, but each album has good material on it.
