The Palace Saloon on Whiskey Row, Doc Holliday's bar, Prescott, AZ.

  • Back in 1900 and even earlier, the Earps, Doc Holliday, Big Nose Kate, and all the frontier miners sat at the same bar that The Palace Restaurant & Saloon has today. Imagine, sitting at the same bar and ordering Straight Whiskey Rye just the way Doc Holliday did when he was there. It really gives you a sensational feeling, but today there are several groups of regulars to the Palace who costume just like back in the day. Jerry Liebman plays the honky tonk tunes and you are transported to the wild west.
    As Martha Mekeel and Scott Stanford, proprietors, say, their food is great..you can order a steak that makes your mouth water. They have all the rare whiskeys, beer, and huge delicious hamburgers with fries that will definitely satisfy your taste buds. They have an outdoor patio, and have added a new room to take care of the folks who are looking for a great time.
    Pictures hung around the entire walls of the saloon depicting old days and original photographs of Prescott back then. The Palace is the center hub of the Whiskey Row, the must do when you are in Prescott and the reason to go to Prescott. plus museums, history, a large inviting park in front and around the Courthouse. You will be charmed by this historic town and all that goes on.

    I really enjoyed this video, and have been been parking to The Palace, many times, in the past three decades, that I've lived in Arizona. I love the whole vibe, of Whiskey Row, and highly recommend that you see the whole historic area, along with seeing the museums, too! CHEERS, to Arizona, and it's fascinating history! :-)

    Back in the 70's we would take this route through Wickenburg up to Prescott to watch the big rodeo they had every year. Great memories.

      What's the bar/restaurant in Wickenburg, on the west side of the highway from Kingman - Phoenix heading south before you cross over the dry creek bed? That's an amazing place too. You walk in and there's an "anterroom" where they have a wall to the right of the entrance to the bar with a lot of pegs on it. There you will often find some holsters with shootin irons parked there. Have to park your gun even today before entering the bar. So, sit up at the bar and within 1-2 hours in broad daylight you'll hear some pistol go off somewhere? Bar tender just laughs, "oh that's probably ole Mattie shooting a rattlesnake disturbing her while she's putting her laundry on the clothes line". That ole dry creek bed, is a "Rattle Snake Crossing", and the State of Arizona even has put up a sign saying as much.

    Best Whiskey Row concert ever was right after we moved there in 1981 and Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show played the original Bird Cage Saloon. Still a great street to hang out on, esp. on the weekend nights.

    Hello, sorry to burst your bubble; I am a tour guide for the walking tours of historic, downtown Preskitt, and it was called the Cabinet Saloon that Earps and Holiday visited. If you want to find out, come and visit March/April to October/November when we host the tours.

    When I was there in 1988 the palace featured a metal band called Road Damage! and Matts featured country bands and a lady bartender, every one called Bubbles! The bird cage was a biker hang out, and Billeys western bar, was Billeys Western Bar!

    The Earps also had a freight business running wagons to and from Tombstone.

      They tried to get one going but it never panned out. Virgil probably operated a wagon in Prescott, but it would have been before Tombstone existed as a town.

    Been there many times, kind of ruined it for me when some kid met me at the door and said "smoking or non smoking" ? , then I saw tablecloths, I left and went to Matt's, that was maybe 20 years ago.

    A very interesting, and well told tale of a very exciting time. So many well-known individuals are mentioned. For instance, when Doc Holliday was away possibly to Glenwood springs, what happened to Big Nose Kate had never really been addressed. SO, now we know she remained till her death in Prescott Arizona. Some questions still remain such as " How long after Doc Holliday's being in Glenwood Springs did it take for Kate to show up in Prescott Az.". Just a little something to keep an interest. Your questions are covered well in Chris Enss's "According to Kate."

      They split up in Prescott in 1880, with her going to Globe. When Doc moved to Tombstone, he convinced her to visit him. She was in T-stone when the OK Corral happened. Afterwards, she went back to Globe. It was not until 1930 or so, she moved back to Prescott, to go to the Pioneer Home. They never met up again after 1881.

    I grew up In Prescott and when I was a boy I had a paper route and delivered to the bars on Whiskey Row and to the Palace. It was a really nice place then, but kind of sad to see how the Palace is more of a tourist Disney kind of place now with all the hokey drugstore cowboys in it like these in the video. The true character of Prescott disappeared some years ago thanks to the developers who have basically ruined the place.

      I agree, we lived out there, last time I was there went down to the Row, nary a cowpuncher to be seen, and never saw one person I knew all night, and nobody knew nothing about nothing.

    Only problem is the picture presented as Doc Holliday isn't Holliday at all. This is an entirely different person and has been commonly falsely attributed to him.

    • @bradcourtney6615
      @bradcourtney6615 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, recent research shows there was no Palace in Prescott at the time he was here, and we honestly do not know what places he patronized. And Wyatt. who was unknown in Prescott at the time, was just passing through anyway, so we actually have no idea what places he visited in Prescott, if any. A lot of whoppers have surfaced about them in Prescott after the blockbuster movie, Tombstone.

    • @bradcourtney6615
      @bradcourtney6615 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh and also, that picture is not Kate. It has also been claimed that it was Josephine Marcus. Neither are true.
