I remember going to a Lupe Fiasco concert years ago with a friend out in Boston. There were a few hip hop artists that filled the first few spots before Lupe came on stage. All of them carried messages of guns, "bitches" and jewelery, all except an artist on stage named Dee-1. Never heard him before but his message and creativity really touched me, I got his albums the next day. Though I may not know much of his schisms and activisms in the hip hop community, im not surprised at all that someone with his character is on your wonderful podcast Ali. Im no less overjoyed two great people get to connect ❤

Loved this conversation, as a hiphop lover/maker I have so many times stopped feeling involved due to the consumption aspect of it. Having spent so many years into it(with a lot of love, failures and grief), I'm deeply touched by some points addressed in this conversation and it's very inspirational to have them voiced in a real way.
I'm not religious but I do connect to the spiritual cause as it is what connects us as humans to the journey we are on.
I'm very gratefull for your time and effort spent in these videos as they are always coming from a place of love/respect and validation of everyone which allows us as spectators to digest and appreciate our relationship to eachother.
    My sincere thanks and appreciation

The thing is. Religion was created after God created everything. There is No such thing as Religion.
      God just wants a Relationship.
Catholicism, Buddism, Yoga, Islam, New Age, Hebrew Israelite, is all Religion created by the devil to deceive.
Jesus Christ is the only way to God.
      Jesus Christ is
The Way The Truth The Life.
      Relationship. Not Religion.
Religion has failed us for many years.
Also, many many 'Christian' leaders have mislead many, gatekept many, and are a part of That Failure.
      The devil is
      The Author of Confusion.
There is Simplicity in receiving Grace Through Faith in Christ.
I Love You. Jesus Loves You. He will be Returning much sooner than We All think.

Not only would you be hard pressed to find an industry with such an overt acceptance of real darkness, but I also feel like it’s been the most “successful” in ACTUALLY imparting that darkness into the souls of real people in America and I’m sure in other countries as well. That dark “entertainment” (evil fantasies, reinforcing of violence) really is translating to real life. So cool to hear someone talk about this. It ain’t just words you know?

Great conversation here. I have such a love hate relationship with hip hop as I get older and try to live a life of higher values and spirituality. This podcast articulated so many of my feelings in beautiful way. Thank you both!

For me, the original inspiration to pursue a higher existence came from hip-hop. It’s not always right at the front, but there’s always incredibly positive music.

1:15:18 is this a dig at his religion?

    • @BrotherAli_Travelers
      @BrotherAli_Travelers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Absolutely not! It’s me saying that he’s preachin and it feels like church. If you listen a few minutes later I thank him for keeping the gospel influence alive in hip hop.

I do believe that Dee-1's message is true, except for some of the anti-Blackness that is cloaked by "righteous" Christianity, but his method of calling out individual rappers instead of organizing with others to build systemic alternatives to the destructive music industry is very flawed.

Completely entitled to your opinion. who are some examples of artist you think are doing it right in the present moment and impacting the culture?

@BrotherAli_Travelers I totally see that point about the “anti-Blackness” or prejudice amongst Christianity. I’ve seen Christians deny or downplay slavery and segregation like it never happened. And often times there are debates about what Christ/the Messiah looked like while on earth and what race did he appear to be. There are those who wholeheartedly believe that the Messiah was the image of the white man with long hair. Whenever it is addressed in Christian spaces, it’s seen as unimportant. I read the Bible/scripture but I’m fully aware that there are things intentionally hidden and removed out of the scriptures.
And @Ivod969 btw Dee-1 actually made a song titled “Racist Christians” so he doesn’t shy away from the prejudice and racism that’s dormant in Christianity.
