This video is not only for righting this wrong. It's also meant as encouragement to greatly reduce passivity in this world. Wrongdoers in this world are given a lot of complacency on a silver platter by knowing that most people will not effectively fight. People have short memories, people don't have the focus to keep the battle going until the end, people don't have the time to keep it going, people don't have the money... That encouraging knowledge is part of their fuel. Are we bully enablers?
Please do not get me wrong. I am in no way an anarchist. My message should not be interpreted as breaking the law, yelling at people, using profanity towards people, ... Please do NOT do that! If the wrongdoing towards yourself is petty to "you", use passivity.
I am suggesting that people use their head, their heart, and the system to not give up when they feel greatly wronged. In my case, the system is the internet including social media. Use the legal system when appropriate.
Now, is it really worth it? I mean... really? That is a loaded subject. Also, it's a dilemma that the wrongdoers can comfortably rely upon. One's decision as to whether or not it will be worth it is usually dependent on whether or not it feels like it would be worth it when they're at the start line. It is common that one would need to pay the price first and find out later that it's worth it.
If you put in reasonable effort and still fail, that is the time to continue smiling and say to oneself something like, "it is what it is. Oh well, life is supposed to be unfair at times."
Simply having the awareness that you have exhausted all avenues before tossing the towel in, has a prize inherent in that, right?

It wasn’t until you spoke out that I realized there were so many people going through this. To be honest, it's very sad because a company or restaurant that can't manage its employees well, or even hires people who don't do their job well, has a big negative impact on the chain. So this problem is not only a problem for the employees, but also a problem for the upper management. I hope this incident doesn't affect you too much and I don't want this to be a vicious cycle for you

Typically, companies will defend their employees even when they know the employee did wrong. They do this for many reasons. They will never admit doing wrong is to avoid getting sued, and they don’t want to get sued by the employee.

Well done Chris, you explained the situation very well. Although the server wanted COB (close of business) to run smooth, she doesn’t have the right to do things at the expense of paying customers. The food industry is a tough one but still, I admire your keeping your cool !!

First, I’m sorry you had an experience like that and understand why you would be upset. I would certainly not have taken the route you did on this, however I do applaud you for standing up for yourself and doing what you feel is right for you. Maybe in my younger years I may have taken more of an exception, maybe not. Even if you did get your justice, does that change the fact that you had the experience? No. Would you feel better about it? Maybe for a little while. The fact remains though it happened. That cannot be undone. Please don’t think I’m being critical or disapproving of the way you handled this situation. That is not at all the case. Like I said earlier, good for you for making yourself heard, I think that takes courage. All I’m saying is that for me, I would have let it go, but at the same time, I very likely would have experienced this situation differently than you. After all we are all unique.

That's quite frustrating, while I can see the server wants her work to be convenient to her schedule, you are there to serve. I personally hate it when I take my wife to a restaurant, it closes at 10, we go at 930 or so and there's nothing u can order then. I'm like seriously? Are u open or not? Doors close at 10, clients finish when they finish within reasons. I've seen it many times and never agreed with that. If I wanted to eat at home, i would stay at home. But if I come to the restaurant and hours say you are open until 10,like the one we went to last week with my wife, then pls make sure you are open to serve or change your hours to 930 or 9 pm. Don't mislead people with your hours for obvious labor cost cutting reasons. And secondly, how is the owner ok with all that? Don't u want the business and repeat clients and referrals? The nonsense about customers being wrong I get, I agree some can be. But me coming and tiptoeing around your hours and hoping you are still serving? C'mon. Get over yourself. It's clear that the manager simply sided with the server rather than being there for clients and only being there for clients that tiptoe around the server schedule instead of the hours of operation.
I've come to many stores, minutes before closing where I would be welcomed, buy what I wanted, and they made a sale. They had the same choice, they could have said sorry, we are closing in 10 men's and u won't have time to buy stuff. Instead they stay open until clock hits the closing hour, doors close for entry and only allow exit. That's how restaurants should be. And what's the madness if closing early? People finish work late these days. Can't even sit down and enjoy dinner? Gotta rush?
What do I do when that happens? I honestly never show up there again. Why many restaurants act this way? Well they would rather lose a client or many than replace the server.
I get servers get their share of shit show from some clients and I side with them for what they go through. But no matter what, it can go a long way to oblige the client /customer and maybe find a silver lining.
    My two cents.

@DmitriIvanenko clothing stores take 10 min to close. A kitchen can take an hour. Generally, the kitchen isn't left alone to close an alarm restaurant, a host or manager, and sometimes the server has to stay. Now potentially 4 people's nights are fucked because no one has commoner courtesy anymore.
I'd have people walk in and try and order a baked whatever or well done steak at 955pm when we close at 10. THOSE PEOPLE RUINED IT FOR EVERYONE ELSE. Gtfo. NO. Figure your life out and go somewhere open later.

@@TheShannaginz I hear you. I worked in the retail, hospitality field, food service etc. I just had a totally different view than many others have. To me working was a privilege and and opportunity to earn more income, so they paid overtime. I took that as a learning on how to serve and deliver for clients/customers. Yes there were times when I wanted to leave early etc, but that was my attitude. No wonder I became a business owner, cause I treated someone else's business this way, so I wanted to build my own one day and I did. The idea of working 9 to 5 until 75 or 85 was not my thing, so I used that as an opportunity to get better. sometimes when you are working that late, you are making a difference for that person and you don't even know it. When we focus only on me me me, we lose sight of what it is that we stand for or impact we can cause for someone else. That's my view. Thx for sharing yours.

I was impressed with the quality of the video, 2 cameras and good audio. Thanks for sharing it. I can agree on things from both sides. It’s correct that you were following the hours of the establishment, that employees should not talk to customers in an insulting way. It seems things were cordial in the beginning, but then slowly escalated on both sides. On her side, she was asking if you could finish up earlier so she could to go home earlier. It is common for restaurant staff to begin cleaning up even 45min to an hour before closing. On your side, you wanted to eat later during their posted opening hours. Maybe wanting a more peaceful setting without too many people, noise etc.
Restaurant staff commonly dislike having late night eaters, because they want to leave no later than the posted closing time. This is especially the case for kitchen staff, as they probably start cleaning earlier than the dining room staff (vents are particularly cumbersome to clean). You did try to be accommodating by ordering an hour or so before closing, not ordering anything more after that, paying before close, and organizing the plates/cutlery so the table could be quickly cleaned. I have stayed at a restaurant until closing, but typically try not to. It has happened when there was a lively chat with friends, and not paying attention to the time. In general, I try not to be a late night eater within an hour or hour and a half from closing, but that’s because I’ve had a job as a cook.
Ultimately, the issue is that neither party was willing to budge on what they were requesting, and this caused an escalation of frustration that kept ramping up for both parties. Was she wrong in asking a customer to leave earlier? Probably. But in the grand scheme of things, if I were the customer, I’d probably try to follow her request, as she is the one working, standing for long hours serving good and bad customers, and who knows if she has kids or other people to take care of….while I’m on my free time, and if put in her place, I’d want to leave as early as possible too, to finally be free as well.
Here is how I felt when I was a cook and a late night diner came in. I’m not saying you were doing the same, but it’s an unwritten rule to not be so late and let the staff finish on time or earlier. A courtesy.

      12:51 - 14 seconds
She only refused me service once when I arrived about 3 minutes before the kitchen closing time.
      23:59 - 23 sec
Perhaps you'd like to point out what I did wrong or what her good reason was for the particular way in which she treated me.
There is definitely selfishness involved on my part (10:04 - 30 sec).
I had thought about going there when she's not working. Not an option! Assuming that I am freed up during that time (e.g. not working), I rarely have the desire to visit restaurants in the daytime (26:32 - 3 sec, 36:55 - 5 sec). The two days she does not work, seem to be Monday and Tuesday and they close at 8 pm on those days. Too early for me and I was going there about every 3rd day.
Yes, it is very easy to form a layperson's opinion on one's reactions when the layperson was not at the receiving end of the wrongdoings including experiencing all the details (e.g. body language, facial expressions, tonality).
That is the only IHOP location which is at a reasonable distance from my home and IHOP is like no other. You see, she has deprived me of all IHOP benefits in a matter of speaking. Her being transferred to another IHOP location or only being scheduled for day shifts would be preferable but her behavior at least in my opinion, should belong on the very short list of infractions that warrant automatic dismissal even if her job was unionized.
