    I was not expecting Mark to like this so much, but as a long-time TS fan, I'm pleased. I don't think it's as complete as folklore and evermore, and I'm never a fan of her anti-hater songs, but I appreciate how introspective and self-critical she can be. As a songwriter, she's far ahead of where she was even four or five years ago.

      there aren't any "anti-hater" songs on this album though (if that's what you were implying)

    I've seen 6 reviews of this album so far between TH-cam & TikTok. 1/2 really liking it & 1/2 saying it's one of her worst. Yours is my favorite. I appreciate that you dug into the album so much & explained it so well. I can't remember the last time I saw people so split down the middle on an album. I'd describe it as the sound of Reputation combined with the sound on Lover which actually makes it surprising that I like it so much. I consider Reputation mid & Lover her worst album... To me Midnights kinda has an outer space fairytale type of vibe.
    Btw you & Crashs reviews of Brave Faces Everyone made me listen to the album & it's now one of my 10 favorites of all time. Thank you for that!

      Really like your description of the album as an “outer space fairytale”. The red skies in maroon, the image of her as a monster in anti hero, “eyes like flying saucers from another planet” on snow on the beach… I get the same vibe

    I loved Karma, it’s a hater song which I usually don’t like from her but since it’s obviously aimed at Scooter Braun and the other profiteers it feels a lot more valid. It’s goofy in the right way.
    I liked Anti-Hero as an admission that actually she does kind of suck and it’s not all the shit she’s been through.
    It does feel like Reputation II, but this album’s an introspective whisper rather than a big dumb shout. I’m interested in what she does next for the first time ever.

    Dude I laude the restraint she shows here. This feels like a proper ALBUM album probably for the first time from Taylor. I'm a proud swiftie and I don't get the hate. It is different than her previous work sonically and in how confessional it is and but it's the music that matters. And I think the music won. It's different but it sucks when a fan doesn't applaude the artist's artistic evolution.

    While I am more a fan of Dessner's work with Taylor than I am with Antonoff's, I was pleasantly surprised by this album. I feel it is her most emotionally intelligent album to date, but also just one of the most interesting in its choices. I don't know what I was expecting Midnights to be, I just know that it wasn't this, and I was more than ok with that.

  • @sleepdeprivedpikachu7235

    …I was not expecting to agree with you as much as I did. As much as I adore folklore and lover and speak now, I honestly think this is the best elements of all along with reputation which I love dearly for the all the wrong reasons combined into one singular project that resonates on a deeper level than perhaps all of them. I still need more time to form a real opinion on it, but it might be her best to date. Saying this as someone who has been listening to her music since childhood and has so much emotional attachment to speak now.
    Favorite tracks: vigilante shit (that bass line is absolutely amazing, and she wears the mask so well it’s disturbing) midnight rain (the vocoder works better for me than I expected, and I’m pretty sure it’s the follow up to back to December, go back and listen to it with that in mind, you might see it) sweet nothing (a combination of it’s nice to have a friend and New Year’s Day in the best way possible, it’s one of my all time favorite ballads from her)
    Least favorite tracks: maroon (I’m not too crazy about the production here, but overall a very solid track that I still like better than about half of red) labyrinth (this one is just a tad stagnant, I think even though the point of the track is to be very slow and winding, you really need a better chorus to pull it all together)
    Overall score: 9.2/10 (this will definitely change in the next few months once I get more time to process)

    It does kinda annoy me the fans will defend Reputation when that album is pretty bad but call this mid, this is close to her best if not her best, even my least favourite song Lavander Haze is still a good 3.5/5. I'm happy Taylor is making music like this become more mainstream, it won't actually mind when this album ends up bombing the chart in a couple of weeks.

      That is just your personal opinion. I think Reputation has something more to offer than this one. The more I listened to Midnights, the more it felt like a recycled version of past sounds, mediocre.
      I think she needs to collab with other producers, Jack's sound is starting to get pretty repetitive.
      (this, too, is only my personal opinion. there are no facts about which is better.)

      tbh I was EXTREMELY disappointed with Rep at first, but it's become one of my favorite albums.
      Similarly, I was pretty disappointed by Midnights overall on first listen, but it's grown on me a lot (and trusted it would, based on the aforementioned Rep journey). I'm more of a lyrics-driven listener, so my distaste for cornier stuff on Rep like Gorgeous and "my drug is my baby" sort of lines translate over to quite a few parts on Midnights, which detracts from my enjoyment. And that's fine! She's proven herself as a writer and has earned the right to put out some (imo) clunkers.
      The fact that people vehemently disagree about what's good and bad in her discography tells me that none of it is objectively bad. I mean, I've seen my leaat favorite songs on the top of people's lists, and vice-versa with some of my favorites. She's got something for everyone, I guess.

Most of the people whose opinions I trust liked it, I liked it, the press reviews are very good, the numbers keep trending upwards so it's clearly connecting with people. Apart from the pick-me's on r/popheads I don't really know who's not liking this album.

    I still need to get through my second listen myself but on first impression, I LOVE how this album sounds. This kind of lo-fi synthpop is just my vibe.
    With many albums I feel unsure on with the first listen, I'm like "Okay, I guess I'll have to listen to it again to know what I properly think of it". With this album, I actively WANT to relisten to it to know what I properly think of it. I'm sure there'll be lyrical passages and sequencing places I missed the first time round.

    What do you mean its not getting love? Have you seen its numbers? 10 songs aiming for Top 10 debut on Hot 100. Already sold 500,000 Vinyls and at 1.2 Million units sold in 3 days. Don't worry! It's a great album which will go down in history as Classic. 😀💯

      As someone who likes this album quite a bit, early numbers are more about the hype behind the artist than public opinion on the specific work. Time will tell if it can maintain those huge numbers beyond first listens.

    • @bharatverma3957
      @bharatverma3957 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeffreyberman8426 I get that. But hype can take you one day or two days on Top on Spotify. This is something really really big. I remember My favorite is Folklore and Red TV, And I can tell It has a really big achievements. Also Hype can't carry an artist to the Top. We saw what happened to Evermore. Everyone had to mass buy in the fandom with 3 remixes just so "Willow" can debut at #1. Now, with this album Midnights is staring at 10 songs debuting in Top 10. If that doesn't tell much I don't know what will.

    It’s a really good album and still not as good as the Loneliest time, good weekend for pop music

    • @krd5709
      @krd5709 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Loneliest Time wasn't as good as everybody makes it seem to be though. The abyssmally low lows of that album (So Nice was one of Carly's worst ever) and the lack of conceptual and sonic framing does not balance out the highs of that album (Bends, however, is arguably one of the best pop releases of the year).

    A really good and intelligent and preceptive review with one major flaw, believing her public 'relationships' are genuine. That's the problem with critiquing Swift, her public persona is in no way real and you can't prescribe songs to that.

    • @SpectrumPulse
      @SpectrumPulse  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      See, here's the thing: you have no way to know that one way or the other. More often that not the number of unforced mistakes that she and her team have made in public give me the impression a lot of this is way more "real" than some massive calculated persona, especially when put into context with the messiness you hear from behind the scenes and in the studio. Yes, some of it is obviously massaged and directed - and on this album she's leaning into the assumptions being made that some of it is indeed calculated - but that doesn't make it inauthentic to her.

    Bruh...I just have mixed feelings about this album ( I buy alot of her merch as well and I'm disappointed with the tshirts) I do aleast like five of the songs off the album but I don't feel like it's something to hyperventilate over.
