Thank you for showing the little plants growing from the spores! My java ferns are starting to reproduce, and I wanted to see what they would look like with all the little babies.
How's it going? I've got a 10 I'm converting and a 20 long I'm eyeing. Bought an anubias 2 weks ago and it's still alive... but I know it'll take a while of I'm killing it so... How'd yours go? Are the fish happier? Are you? Was there a lot of plant death or do they come back? (When I first got aquariums here I struggled hard core - in Seattle fish were easy. Moved to the middle of the desert and found out water here is just liquid limestone.
I bought an El Niño fern about a month ago and it started growing little “Ninos” on the leaves in about a week. I had to relocate my other plants to spread out all the little sprouts. Now I’ve got a “fern garden” tank for guppy breeding. 👍
Windelov is my favorite too!! The frazzled ends are such a great texture and my shrimp love them! I like checking them out thinking its just the same old frilly ends then finding all the new plantlets! Fun video yet again! ☺️

I just let it float and tumble around in my 20 l, and it became almost a perfect circular clump. But when I moved it to my 75 g, it died. I am going to try again with Java fern after watching your video!

Just bought three of these today. Tried resting them on the sand but after watching this going to try and attach to the large driftwood I have as center piece. Informative content, just upgraded my female bettas tank to a five gallon. Eventually would like to do a ten.
Thanks for sharing this information. Unfortunately I still haven’t fallen in love with this plant....that’s all on me though. I feel that Jason is enjoying editing your videos a little too much 😂. Well done guys !
Coolest thing happened tonight: my first cherry shrimp spawn started hatching - saw a few of them pop off mama shrimp, who has been hung onto a Java Fern leaf for the last 3 hours!
Wow didn’t know some of that ! If you take some of those little spores and want to put on some rocks for instance, do they stick by themselves or do you have to “help” them with glue or ??? THANKS FOR ANOTHER GREAT VID !

Thank yo so much, I have selected Java Fern, Crypts and Anubias based on your advice and all of them doing well in my first low tech planted aquarium. Today I noticed mother Java Fern is having babies too. 💚😄

I love these plants, too, but after a couple years, i gave up! I have many other plants which are thriving, but i'm sure jealous you can grow them. Maye it's just my water (or me!). heehee.

Thanks for the video about Java plant care. Like you I love the crested ones and, have you seen the cultivar 'Sunrise'? It looks like a dandelion leaf. How great is that?
“At first I thought that was creepy but now I think it’s pretty cool...” 😆 Could apply this statement to so many things in life! 🤣😁 Question: I thought I read somewhere that JF will only produce the little leaf plantlets if stressed. I’ve noticed mine only produce those for the first few weeks then just propagate by rhizome after (& honestly haven’t seen any plantlets since improving my ferts).
@@thesmallscape Can’t verify for sure (& I for sure am not any sort of plant expert) but I thought I remembered that from an Aq Co-op livestream and recent blog somewhere...
I wonder if im burning this plant? 🤔 I can never seem to keep it happy. It grows some and propagates some but inevitably it starts getting brown bits and yellowing. My anubius does fantastic as do a variety of other plants but the java fern just struggles. So now I'm wondering if its too much light possibly..
It dawned on me in this video that I buried my Java fern in a recent tank setup and I couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t looking so good..... hopefully it will recover, keep up the great content :)
I have that windelove! They are in little pots in my 8 gallon. I took one out of its pot yesterday and floated it. I love that plant. Thanks so much for a terrific video 😀
about propagation... i jave had my java fer for over 2 years started as a small bunch about 6 leaves but i have never seen spores start from a healthy leaf i have only seen new growth come from the ryzome itself, i now have a fairly large bush of it. is there an explanation for this
I just got my 29gal tank all set up. Got my 1st live plants in and they look great. I did however forget that salt can kill plants. I generally put a very low concentration (1/2 tsp per gallon) of salt in my new tanks. I dont keep it at that level after water changes, but will that amount of salt kill java moss, xmas moss, Marino moss balls, Pogostemon Octopus, and Bacoba Carolinaia(spelling?)
Love java ferns mist my tanks have my fave as well Windelov in them. They make the cutest tiny babies even cuter than baby Anubias lol 😇 Thanks again Joanna!!
I got two tiny pieces of Java fern in the bag with fish a couple days ago. I've had it in a cup trying to figure it out. I mean they were tiny. Thanks for help. Gluing to rocks and going in my "baby girl betta" tank.
Hi great video on Java Fern and all of its variations. Would like to know, does it need Fertilizer? So far ive seen info stating you do and other info not saying and some saying you dont!!! So not sure what to do, ive just bought a java fern today Microsorum ptropus and would like to know how best to care for it.
4:09, had no idea they did this. My Java ferns also came with the roping but I never cut it. Although they are growing fantastic so I guess I’ll just leave it on ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Went to PetSmahhht on Sunday and found a tube w/narrow leaf Java Fern!! I noticed it was tied w/thread just like you showed, and I got 6 plants out if it!!! Score! I glued each one to a pebble and dropped 'em all around my tank. :)
Last winter we had an ice storm that knocked out the power for 5 days. The temperature in our house got down to the low 40's. My java ferns and actually all of my aquatic plants survived.
I love your videos and have used a lot of your suggestions. I have had java fern for awhile now and leaves are turning black. Could they be burning and are they saveable?
The first time I seen the black dots on my java fern I was like what in the heck is on my plant! After some googling I found out what it was and thought it was kinda cool never seen a plant propagate like this before!
Java is the easiest beginner plant and emeditly brightens up any aquarium. Bright green in color. Flowy. Adds light movement to the tank and also is great in front of the filter to help break flow. It's my favorite beginner plant so far and my tetras love to swim through them
That looks totally different to my Java Fern & mine just roots off the stems with no baby plants! I think it looks more like the trident variety, the fish shop said it was a new type of Java Fern.
Hi. Can Java Fern be placed directly in water and not attached in a rock or wood? Just like any other plant that can thrive in a glass of water. Thanks.
This must be my 3rd watch of this video. I keep returning to it whenever I have a new question about this plant. I did notice the string right away when I purchased mine & took it off. I actually grew it emersed for a bit, until I was ready to set up my tank. So now I have a bunch of single leaves here and there around my tank and they look kind of sad & pathetic. Will they eventually spread and grow more leaves at the base,? I have one that has babies growing from the top - it was a torn leaf that was given to me & I let it float, that was about 6 months ago, now it's in my 14 gal cube tank, but no sign of any base growth so far. When they say slow growing, what are we expecting in terms of growing time for noticeable changes to the plant?
Just put some of this and dwarf hair grass in my little desk tank(10 gallon) debating what to put in the tank with it. Thinking a few guppies and some bottoms dwellers like albino corydora
@@thesmallscape thanks. I have a 10 gallon that I'm quarantine a fancy goldfish in. It had the recommended amount of salt for 10 gallons I just wandered if it would kill plants I planned on purchasing
I have tried to keep Java twice but the leaves keep getting black and getting loads of holes in them and eventually falling off. Whats going on? Its in low light Above substrate Got these last 3 from tropica on bogwood
Same problem here, no matter what I tried. I've finally given up on java ferns. I have heavily planted tanks with everything else thriving, so I have no idea what the issue is.
Great job, as usual Joanna. Question-I planted a small group of java fern and individual leaves broke away from the rhizome. The leaves are just floating. They don't look like they are dying. Can I superglue the leaf to rocks /wood? What can I do with them?
I wasn't really a fan of java fern at first, but I don't think I gave it time to settle in. It's OK now. I probably wouldn't buy it much again in the future... Also noticed they smell funky sometimes 😂
It definitely takes some patience but once it gets started after waiting so long.. what a great plan?? I've never smelled it before though going to have to check it out 😂😂
Awesome video Joanna! 💚 Microsorum (the genus) has some really fascinating species "Java fern", "Crocodile Fern", "Blue Oil/Scarab Fern"... wait... and unless I'm confused, Java fern has been 'recently' moved to the genus Leptochilus?
I am going to buy new java fern in May or the end of April when the weather warms up. My previous ferns became infested with BBA and staghorn algea so I had to toss them. I was dosing liquid fertilizer according to the instructions on the bottle but I think it was more than my anubias and java fern needed.
That’s a bummer when that happens. I now wait a couple months to dose and sometimes rarely dose with a number of my tanks. Especially for the tanks with brighter lights. ☺️
hi, the leafs of my Java fern are turning brown and die. What is wrong with it ? Is it my water or not enough or to much light ? I bought it on a piece of driftwood, and now it is dying ? Help me please
I'm not sure you will see this, but I'll ask anyway. I'm ready to start up my first planted tank in a 15 gal. I want to have plants, one betta, a snail, maybe shrimp, and a few nano community fish. My question is what order should I start adding these? Also, approximately how long should I wait to add the next thing? Thank you! 😊
Hi Cassie! Well, generally we don’t keep shrimp with a betta, you might not see your shrimp for very long. I would probably put snail and community fish in and then add betta. No set timeframe in between adding, just watch your water parameters. Good luck!

@@thesmallscape ,I don't know? I still have 4 others in their pots. For some reason it's not really floating that well. More like float -sinking. :)
Getting plants and snails in a tank
Ready for these first fish
Thanks for all the tips!
Woohoo!!
I got some javafern and its really long.. is it ok to trim the top half off completely to fit my shallow tank?
about propagation... i jave had my java fer for over 2 years started as a small bunch about 6 leaves but i have never seen spores start from a healthy leaf i have only seen new growth come from the ryzome itself, i now have a fairly large bush of it. is there an explanation for this
I just got my 29gal tank all set up.
😇😂👍
Those little babies ARE cute - just hanging out and holding on. ☺️

As per light, how many hours require?
I’ve got one and it’s growing little ones on its ends . Super cool
Oh yes, isn’t that just the greatest! 🌱🌱🌱
@@thesmallscape yes !!! Do you think if I left them attached they’d be okay ? I would like to see what might happen as if it were nature and natural
I have so many baby spores, how do I get the big large leaves
Love my javas and they propagate like crazy. Nice bang for your buck
Went to PetSmahhht on Sunday and found a tube w/narrow leaf Java Fern!! I noticed it was tied w/thread just like you showed, and I got 6 plants out if it!!! Score! I glued each one to a pebble and dropped 'em all around my tank. :)
Suuuuhweeet!! That’s a supah score!! 👍
Last winter we had an ice storm that knocked out the power for 5 days. The temperature in our house got down to the low 40's. My java ferns and actually all of my aquatic plants survived.
I got the bolbitus Java fern from petco. I really love it
I love your videos and have used a lot of your suggestions. I have had java fern for awhile now and leaves are turning black. Could they be burning and are they saveable?
The first time I seen the black dots on my java fern I was like what in the heck is on my plant! After some googling I found out what it was and thought it was kinda cool never seen a plant propagate like this before!
I know! Crazy!!
I have the regular, narrow leaf and trident. I’ll have to find some of that lace for my next scape.
I’m anxiously awaiting some trident!
Thanks.
Yup, they will just sink and settle anywhere in the tank. Then, the roots will just attach themselves once settled.
I am learning so much fro. The 2 of you
That’s so nice to hear ☺️
Terrific plant and a Great review video 🙂
Thank you! ☺️🌱
Thanks for the tips. I haven’t done well with these so far. And they’re supposedly easy. Mine have babies but so many brown leaves also.
Cut them off
Any plant that gets brown or yellow leaves. It's draining nutrition from the other parts of the plant.
Just put some of this and dwarf hair grass in my little desk tank(10 gallon) debating what to put in the tank with it. Thinking a few guppies and some bottoms dwellers like albino corydora
Can java fern handle aquarium salt?
Some... not too much though as far as I know.
@@thesmallscape thanks. I have a 10 gallon that I'm quarantine a fancy goldfish in. It had the recommended amount of salt for 10 gallons I just wandered if it would kill plants I planned on purchasing
Thank you for explaining the spore dots. I noticed these little dots on my plant leaves 🍃 and I was thinking they were snails.
I have tried to keep Java twice but the leaves keep getting black and getting loads of holes in them and eventually falling off. Whats going on?
Its in low light
Above substrate
Got these last 3 from tropica on bogwood
Same problem here, no matter what I tried. I've finally given up on java ferns. I have heavily planted tanks with everything else thriving, so I have no idea what the issue is.
How often should you fertilise it
Beautiful plants. Good video 👍
☺️Thank you so much Dan! ☺️
i just burried mine just a little in my sand do you think it will be okay?
Great job, as usual Joanna. Question-I planted a small group of java fern and individual leaves broke away from the rhizome. The leaves are just floating. They don't look like they are dying. Can I superglue the leaf to rocks /wood? What can I do with them?
The Java fern I have in my water garden was a broken leaf that was passed on to me. If you let it float for a bit, it'll grow a rhizome & roots.
I wasn't really a fan of java fern at first, but I don't think I gave it time to settle in. It's OK now. I probably wouldn't buy it much again in the future...
Also noticed they smell funky sometimes 😂
Really?! Hmm..worth it for the Windelov though for me. 😂 ...hope the fish don’t mind 🤭
It definitely takes some patience but once it gets started after waiting so long.. what a great plan?? I've never smelled it before though going to have to check it out 😂😂
Java Fern is another plant I find to be bomb proof along with Anubias. Both are super plants for beginners 🤓
You nailed it Mark!! Hope you're having a blessed day my friend!!🙏💚🌿🐟🌿♥️
Bomb proof - ya! ☺️
Awesome video Joanna! 💚
Microsorum (the genus) has some really fascinating species "Java fern", "Crocodile Fern", "Blue Oil/Scarab Fern"... wait... and unless I'm confused, Java fern has been 'recently' moved to the genus Leptochilus?
Wait?! Has it?? I will need to investigate - thanks for the tip!
@@thesmallscape Perhaps not the most reliable source, but even the wikipedia article on Microsorum pteropus redirects to Leptochilus pteopus!
@@thesmallscape all part of the learning curve. Now I know to creep up on the ferts over a really long time. Totally frustrating though.
Very educational video.
Thanks for the info Joanna!
hi, the leafs of my Java fern are turning brown and die.
Good luck!
Sweet video. Very informative.🥰🥰🥰
anybody have any recommendations for online stores that carry good driftwood in the states? Thanks!
