Materials Needed:
8- 2”x2”x8’
2- 1”x2”x8’
4” post cap base
Decorative post top of your choosing
2 1/2” deck screws
1 1/4” deck screws
Wood glue
Cuts: 2x2
4- 7’ long
4- 10”
4- 15”
4- 20”
4- 25”
Cut each 8’ 1x2 in half to make 4’ lengths

I agree but this video was only the second one I watched.
I've just recently started doing woodwork, have never really been artistic until 2020. I had to have brain surgery due to a birth defect, and after I woke up in recovery, literally in my hospital room, started thinking of things to make with pallet wood. I stayed watching TH-cam videos, looking up pictures on Google for ideas and screenshooting hundreds of pictures. I was an LPN working in a nursing home before surgery, and due to some new side effects of the procedure, I can't go back to work. This has become my way of therapy dealing with stress and overwhelming depression and anxiety. I've watched many, many of your videos and now I think I have the confidence to start a small business to help my husband whose only income is his disability check. We lost my dad's house that we had lived in with him for 18+ years in November after my surgery, and had to move into a camper in our daughter's back yard, so that makes it very hard to accumulate enough materials to really do much of anything, but now I have a glimmer of hope. Thank you so much for your videos, your warm and kind personality, and your inspiration!!!
Thank you for the excellent instructional video. I have made 2 so far. The first is 7' the second one is 8' tall. The base of the 8' ended up being 33" at the base, so I had to assemble it outside as the doors would not let it through the door. I wish I could post a picture. It would be nice to see everyone else's version. 😎
This would look good with Christmas lights on it, in the yard for Christmas.
I have just completed two of these for our shade garden. I needed height, so I didn't shorten the 8' 2X2s and added an extra "rib" of 30"X30", 12" from the ground. I also didn't want the decorative top and instead used copper fence post caps. These are both stunning and will provide great support for two vines I had previously planted. Thanks for the easy-to-follow video.

Christine, I haven't found anyone that can bring a project down to its core steps and make you feel like you can conquer the project better than Matt. He just has a great speaking voice and he doesn't waste time with the obvious, he just gives us the meat and taters so we feel like we could build whatever he is laying out for us.

Thanks for this video! We just delivered 24 to a local nursery!!!! It was a lot of work, they requested them painted; half white, half black in 6 & 7 foot sizes. Used primer and good exterior semi-gloss, sprayed on. We've painted darker colors before and the primer really is does help with coverage, that said we had to go over spots with brush and roller. We putty and paint over the deck screws, but I'm thinking that maybe using a deck screw the color of the obelisk (if available) may be perfectly fine...and then just dab a bit of paint in the hole to cover the raw wood? We had built about 14 prior to this order, certainly no experts but we learned and developed a system to produce. One of the challenges is, these things are big and you need a spot to build as well as store! Oh and then deliver them...not like you can just toss them in the back of the truck!

@@miataman2001 Hey! We used pine. Being that we painted with exterior paint, felt for the price, best to use. Now...I can truly see the value of using cedar if you can get a good price as painting takes time especially when you're building multiples. Last years cedar 2x2 did not make it cost efficient for us.
Can I ask how much you are charging and what area your in ?
@@flogmot The nursery bought them from us at 125.00 each (we had refused them at 100.00 each). We sold more on our own at 100 - 125 each, although we were hoping when we got into this at 175.00 to 225.00 each. We had to rent shop space, truck and/or trailer so in the end not profitable for us. We're in the Seattle area.
What did they retail for. Did you have trouble getting the cap on the top of the legs, that is so hard to do

My first one took almost 5 hours. But I had to make little jigs for a stop on my miter saw. I guess I need to make a back brace to allow something to hook on as a stop. My 7* bevels on the cross pieces didn't line up right so I just made a 45. They turned out ok. Thanks for the video. Bought the hard paper plans to show you some love for your hard work.

Matt. Made your obulisk 😂 today. Screwed up the angles the first time because I had the mitre to the wrong side. But my few inches shorter trellis turned out great. Love your channel. .
Love the grain of the reclaimed lumber I thing it will extend the life of the project with the tighter grain :)

Great job on this and the explanation. It's great. Funny story though, I made some fan trellises following your tutorials, at a friend's house last week I was showing the husband what I made and my wife and his wife came over and said she wanted a few and.... 2 obelisk. She sid I want them like something I saw on TH-cam. I showed her your channel and she said no that's not him. 2 days later she send me this tutorial and said this is the one. I told her that is the guy I showed you first. So I made 2 for her using this tutorial as well. Thank you for being so real and personable. Love most of your tutorials. I have built raised garden beds using treated fence pickets and also cedar. On the verge of making a pouring table out of cedar pickets. My next project from your tutorials is a concealment shelf or coat rack, may even incorporate the aged barnwood look. Keep up the good work and will continue to watch and like.

Thank you for all you sharing and great detail, you are easy to understand and learn from.
I have been enjoying you videos and becoming more and more inspired.
I plan on making these trellises, I will be using them in a specific place on the property, can you share the math to figure out the even spacing of the squares? I am looking to make these shorter by 2 feet and only 16 inches at the bottom. I was not sure if it was trial and error or some mathematical hints to make it easier to figure out.

If you are going to give this build a shot do what I did and it's generally how I approach any new build that I haven't wrapped my crazy ass brain around. Build a small version of the project. I built a obelisk that was 18" tall. I got the angels straight and now I can whip them out pretty quick. I actually build miniature furniture in usually 1/8th scale which means that 1" is equal to 1/8th inch. I build some really nice Adirondack chairs. I looked through the endless magazines and books I have collected over the years and I found a chair that would be a bit of a challenge at full scale but when you break it down and scale it down you realize that you are spending hours cutting out little arm supports along with all the rest of the parts. I had a endless amount of seat slats and the back is curved. I got so sick of the scroll saw and standing at the sander for what seemed like days and watching dust covering my bench. I had the dust collector on but it never gets it all..

I just finished making my first obelisk by following this video, and I have to say this is a very clever and well thought out design. However, due to the arthritis in my hands, there is no way I could follow the video instructions for assembling the squares. Holding two pieces lubricated with slippery glue and then nailing them was simply beyond me. So when in doubt, use clamps. This is going to take longer to read/write than it did to actually do the job. Take piece one and clamp to the workbench, apply glue to the right hand end, position piece two and nail. Unclamp piece one and clamp piece two, apply glue, position piece three and nail. Repeat all the way round and for all the squares. You get the picture.
Awesome way to think outside of the box Peter! You could also make a jig to hold the angle while you work with it!
This video awesome and as a novice I find all of your videos to be quite inspirational. Thank you. Quick Q - how does one end up with 2x2 scraps? 2x4s, 2x6s, etc. are not wide enough.

Matt, My wife and I have built several of these and ordered the plans as well to guide us along, the video and plans are great. One question though, if we wanted to scale these down to different heights, say 5 ft or 3 ft, is there an easy way to adjust the size of the squares and angles of the leg posts? Thanks.

how long did this take you to build? also did you use treated lumber?
I'm very surprised that nobody has mentioned using TRIM SCREWS where you using deck screws with the big head. The hole left by the head is only 1/8 inch in diameter. PLUS....most of the time, you don't even have to to pre drill or use a counter sink the head. Another note is that ALL deck screws have little flutes under the head of the screw that makes them counter sink them selves.
I still need to make shorter versions of this project. Are the bevels and mitres the same for shorter obelisks?
On the measurements for the squares, are the measurements taken on the outside or inside?
I want to make one of these trellis like you have here, but only 5 foot tall. Do I have to adjust the picture frames/supports sizes? Can you give me an idea to start? Thank you.

So I was looking to make some trellis's this spring out of some cedar fence pickets but I remembered I have about a dozen 6 foot long treated 2x4s. Treated 2x4's hold up as good as cedar outside? I would probably paint the trellis white or brown.
Are you using treated wood on these or cedar ?
You shouldn't use treated wood in the garden. Linseed oil is a good alternative
If I make the trellis 5’ instead of 7 ‘ how does that change the outside box cuts? Do I do 10, 15, 20 still?
For the sake of my southern accent I will call it a trellis 😂 This looks so nice, not to mention easy! You gave me some great ideas. Would this design be good for holding the weight of tomatoes or melons? Thanks for the great video!

I used long leaf pine. If you're worried about bugs maybe stick with cypress or cedar. Thanks for watching!

Hey Matt, are those actual 2” X 2” or are they 1 1/2” X 1 1/2” ? I cut mine at 1 1/2” X 1 1/2” and need to put the miter and bevel on them still tomorrow. However as I thought about it, if they needed to actually be 2” X 2” I think that might change the side lengths a little wouldn’t it? A little help would be appreciated before I make my cuts.
I dont know where to line up the wood, to oroperly just cut the angle and not cut off any of the length. If someone could please teach me this i would be eternally grateful

I am curious, i am considering screwing the decorative boards from the inside to avoid the screw heads. I was also considering pocket holes for the squares. I am mostly wondering if you have looked into having no screws visible or if it really does not matter. Thanks.
You can also countersink the screws and plug them, or use a wood putty
This is a decent video, but you should definitely screw from the back that way it doesn't look like it has 1000 holes in it. Even if its getting painted, no sense in adding more work for yourself with having to use putty or spackel to fill holes.

Hey Mathew, great videos! What to ask what you specifically mean but reclaimed wood. We know lumber stock today is mostly garbage so using older growth would be better I assume. Do you use barn beams and mill them or other reclaimed lumber? How do you source it?
Question: are the measurement's 15" from 90 or just mark 15" then cut?
does the Obelisk have a jig?
I don’t understand the turning it twice I see you turn it once?
Only criticism would be give folks instructions in how to cut 7/7 with a simple miter or power hand saw
