  • As more and more train derailments happen people are asking questions, why? Whats the deal? Why can't Norfolk southern or BNSF keep it on the tracks? Valid questions and today here is a very little piece of the pie as to why the derailments have been happening, and another example of how the carriers prioritize money over the safety on the general publics and their workers.

Had a train last night to take from Birmingham to Chattanooga. 41% of the loads were in the rear third of the train. We called out the rule that says you can’t have that high of a percentage on the rear. Told the yardmaster the exact tonnage in the rear third. They changed their math 3 different times and then said it was okay to go. Train tan like shit the whole trip, but we babied it between 15 and 30 mph the entire trip.

I'm glad you didn't get accused of 'Dogging It'. That happened to me when I first hired out. It was "Get the Work Done Now" not follow the rules. Being the 'New Kid' I was an easy 'Scape Goat'! But....many years later I was nominated for the Harold F. Hammond National Railroad industry safety recognition award. Near the end of my career the VP of the railroad wanted to meet me but I declined. So....he flew in from corporate and held my 'Surprise' retirement party. He's now the CEO on the CN. So, it's YOUR TURN to run a railroad ! Most importantly Always be Aware of your Surroundings, ALWAYS ! and "At Any Time, On Any Track, in Either Direction" (it's 'In the Book)In my 37 years 15 fellow trainmen were killed. Don't take this job lightly. And keep an eye on your coworker not the baseball score. Trust me. 'Been There, Done That" and.......Good Luck !

The one in East Palestine had several shop cars that had the tags taken off by the road foreman. The same foreman then tried to pin it on one of our yardmasters.

I worked in a truck shop at a chemical plant, and they did the same kind of stuff. The spot truck driver was pulling deadline signs off of deadlined trailers on our lot, just so they could get the loads sent out. So never mind that they had DOT violations and were awaiting repair. Just get the driver with his load down the highway…

I can't say how many times I have been on a train where the trail tonnage was ridiculously high. The yard masters don't care. They want the trains out of the yard.

I got accepted to ns earlier this week. I applied to 4 different locations. 3 in PA which is where I am from and wanted to work/live. Then WV was the 4th. I got accepted to WV and just waiting on the background check. Its actually not a job I would have considered before or even though about despite growing up near a rail yard. I saw the really weird csx recruiting video and then found your channel after. Then found out a good buddy of mine has worked for ns for 18 years and started giving me pointers. This is a big leap forward for me especially because I will be moving states and won't know anyone. I currently work at a historical Fort and love it. its more of a gig job. Sad that I am gonna have to leave it. However I am looking forward to my new chapter in life. I just hope its a long one. I am going into NS to see if its something I could do for a couple years til find something better or if its a career.

That’s awesome Ed! I was in a very similar boat as you when I hired in. I didn’t leave the state, I did move 2-3 hours away but looking back, it’s something I’ll remember the rest of my life. That single decision catapulted me into where I am now.

If you complain, you get get targeted and eventually charged with rule violations. Until the mindset of railroad management conforms to some sense of reality, nothing will change.
Another thing: Why aren’t railroad managers subject to random drug testing? In my career, I experienced firsthand many inebriated managers who were addicts to both drugs and alcohol. The company said they had their own testing program, but I never ever heard of any manager getting drug tested. It was all faked, and reports to the FRA were falsified, I’m sure.

If the train management system is running the engine and gets a knuckle then it’s no big deal no matter how many you break. If the engineer is handling the train then it’s a start major 🤷🏻🤷🏻. Now to something funny. Remember the scrappers that would steal metal off cars getting ready to go into Nucor? They were in full force today. I know they had to at least get 1000 pounds off the cars today 😂😂😂

I take trains up and over cajon pass and Tehachapi loop and i can definitely say on alot of the trains we get from Texas and Arizona(almost every workday) they dgaf how trains are built, they are fine to run on the flats and the small stair step hills but 99.9% of the time they are illegal to take over the mountain due to placement errors and 99.9% of the time they highball them. They make us switch them out .1% of the time and majority of the time its empty centerbeams that cause the issue and we all know those are derail happy especially next to a set of loads coming down on top of them. I understand the trains have set outs/pick ups in route to us but when you hand the trains over with 4-5 hours to spare because some dumbass manager that knows nothing about how trains work told them to also highball the train makeup you could have taken that extra time and made the shit legal especially when after we get the train it usually takes us all 12 to run from colton to the central valley in California and we have a high chance to spit cars out on all those tight turns in Tehachapi and such. I get it we allll wanna go home but damn have a little bit of pride and self respect and do your job the correct way and that goes for managers, crews and yardmasters. Because if you do the job right then theres nobody to point the finger at besides the company and their faulty equipment.......or an engineer who just sucks with train handling 😂

    • @estrohmeyer
      @estrohmeyer ปีที่แล้ว

Well said, if the people responsible for building these in yards, yardmasters, managers, etc. Did their jobs right instead of trying to get it out by a certain time then this kind of stuff would be less frequent

They put 22 ballast cars on the back of an 80 yr old rail train and wondered why the rail train pulled in half. Heavy spagetti. The decision to put MW unit trains in commodity trains lasted about 2 years.

Blame the investors on Wall Street for this stuff! They are running the companies in the U.S. If companies aren’t run in
such a way to make THEM money, they throw a big fit, and
the guys at the top loose their
heads. Of course, then it all flows down hill, and it’s the guys at the bottom that are at
fault; and they also loose their
heads. It’s all about the operating ratio and the safety rules are usually a little over the top, anyway! I agree railroading is dangerous and there needs to be a mindset of safety, but they are trying to take the
individualism out of it. Put everyone in the same pot, make
everyone on the same page. As
long as you’re being safe, some
just do things different from others!

Never heard of an engineer being decertified for train makeup 🤔, and knuckles are broke by bunching force not stretching, the knuckles are meant to be pulled 🤷🏻‍♂️
This is just a way they can blame the conductor for something else all the engineer has to do is ask the FOREMAN (CONDUCTOR) if everything is good and it’s a get out of jail free card. They don’t want engineers working as brakeman it does them no good.
