This is so absurd that ppl keep on hating, you display great technique, not only using all kendo arsenal, but intutively going beyond its strict restrains. Be proud, you do awesome job! Btw I didnt see scythe video yet, it seems its more interesting than I thought. I loved grabbing the shaft after bind / parry!
The key is basically to cut the distance as much as possible, scythes, spears, war flails, etc are made for keeping the distance and dealing damage without getting hurt whatsoever, so what they did by pushing into them fast is pretty good!! also, the tecnique you people display is AWESOME!!!! You guys are really cool
Wondering... spear seems more of a defensive weapon, so forcing the attack like mostly seen here seems ill suited. But once the spear has committed to an attack/counter, the speed of the sword takes the advantage.
@@quintessenceSL it’s just that the greater range means that the spear can always be threatening before you can threaten it with a sword. There’s always a barrier to be bypassed before you can even threaten the opponent. Grabbing the shaft is ideal, but very difficult.
@@quintessenceSL bro best way to check that out is to take a long broomstick, and just imagine someone getting you from front. I can not see anyone getting past me unless he is really skilled or has a lot of strength
Whenever I was in a pole vs sword and shield match up it looked a lot like this. The shield has to run down the pole to get inside the threat of the pole. A good pole arm will be able to switch grips to keep striking, but once he is close the shield has the advantage.
Fantastic super cut with so many fun exchanges! Also, his kiai @1:42 sounds almost like he's yelling "yay!" after scoring a hit, so that's bonus points.
I think that to beat any polearm with a sword or any weapon with a shorter reach you must have an offhand (preferably defensive) just to block and redirect linear attacks cause they are they hardest ones to avoid. The attacks that span radially (in arcs from above and sides) I think can be avoided by moving forward or backwards. Thus I think that a defensive off hand like a shield is the most important part of your arsenal when facing a weapon with greater reach, especially when the weapons primary attack is piercing.
I love those "blood splash" effects in the hits. I love this channel. It would be very cool a championship where fighters could choose freely what weapon they would use or it could be chose in dice rolls by chance.
The way the guy uses the net is not only ridiculous but totally out of context. Retiarius was routinely pitted against a secutor which yielded a short sword and used a big heavy shield, making him better protected but less agile. Morevover, the retiarius not only had a trident as offensive weapon, but used a dagger as secondary weapon when he had lost his net or trident.
The big reason why the kendoka managed to get in reach to attack is footwork. Their footwork was way better than their opponents', and I would say they're either not experienced with their weapons, or have way less experience than the kendoka has with a shinai. Some get way too close instead of using the reach of their weapon, and the correct distance for your weapon is something you only get with experience.
A few general observations: 1: a limited space is a poor position for a pole weapon to face sword, sword and shield, or dual swords. In one v. one, the polearm needs to move a LOT more and really control the space. Their goal is to keep the swordman in their striking range and not let the swordman get in close. Striking distance starts out far and ends out far. So they need room to run back, side to side, circle. Force the swordman to always be chasing them. Polearms are clumsy in tight spaces. 2: Many of these weapons are force multipliers, mass impact and furrowing weapons. There is just no safe way to replicate their true weight and applied damage. Foamy weapons are fun to play with and experiment, but they dont represent the real weapon other than shape. Many of the impacts "blocked" by the sword would have been devastating with the real thing. Obliterated arms, crushed torso. They are "non-blockable" by a sword at any range. like trying to hit a bowling ball with a baseball bat. For example, the person with the long chained morning star basically pummeled him/herself to death long before the "fight" started. 3: Rarely did the poleman make use of grips at various ranges, pulling the pole in for short distance attacks while backpeddling and then firing the polearm back out as they gained space. On otherwords, they did not effectively control striking distance. That has the consequence that they really didnt take advantage when they had opportunities. 4: When in close, the poleman has to start mixing a bit of wrestling in with striking. when done effectively, the poleman can treat the opponent like a rag-doll and literally throw them back out into striking range. Weapons like the scythe are MADE for this. in reference to #3, Scythe is supposed to be a deceptive weapon. shoot it out past the swordsman.. let them think you missed.. it kills when you draw it back in. strikes to the back of the leg, top of the wrist (pulling the sword), back of the neck, and top/back of the shoulders. A really good scythe fighter has many ways to make you sit down. Scythes are misunderstood in the same way that axes and warhammers are misunderstood.. sure they ARE great at hitting your opponent (IF you can get in close enough.. or in the case of scythe, can get a good long obvious swing), but they are much BETTER at grabbing /destroying shields, yanking on swords and arms, manhandling your enemy and finally striking unarmored juicy bits. The scythe fight at 0:06 was nearly PERFECTLY executed.
i think that using a real polearm is also dangerous for the wielder himself. I only would use staffs or spears. The inertia makes it hard to me to make blocks or switch stance and i could become very tired from missing some attacks
The long weapons could have slash off the swordsman's feet or torso as it drops down, it is deadly. Mostly it is the experience differences handling the weapon and is too dangerous to do it real. The person near the end holding what it looks likes an asian helberd is not even doing a horse stand. This video doesn't mean one is better than the other, but only is good to see how the sword could do in practice.
Not to mention deflecting the shafts of the weapons as well. In practical combat the weight of the spears would make it difficult for swords to completely deflect them, albeit not impossible. Just very hard
Yes, reverse grip works really well in very close quarter combat... I recommend the video from Let's Ask Seki Sensei about the topic... edit: also Shogo's video where he reacts to Sellsword Arts...
The key to winning vs a polearm is to fight someone who isn't willing to actually injure you. If you've fought with polearms you know you have to be pretty careful even when people are wearing real armor, not just kendo or standard hema gear. People watch videos of gentle, friendly sparring and think that it's easy to "just get past the point" or grab the haft, when really it's *very* difficult to pull off against someone striking with intent.
Forgive me for my lack of knowledge and experience but I would assume that while in a duel situation a sword in the right hands may be massively effect however in a battle of mass soldier movments the space and mobility allowed for in a duel situation is severely hindered allowing for long reach weapons to be a million times more effective Also in this clip while everyone is in protective gear we are simulating unarmored combat however in a simulation of armored combat the results may be massively different
long weapon man , almost dont take adv. of their long weapon. 1. no keep distance 2. body inertia move forward when attacking(big loophole). 3. no sense of attack furthest distance of themself and enemy. however, one hand sword parry, other hand attack , this method can shorten stand distance for attack chance.
Thank you all for the video 👊🏻 when it comes to long-range weapons I would rather have a simple spear or something close to it like for instance a Yari type
This particular video doesn't seem to say HOW to beat long range. It merely shows samples where it happened. If I recall these fights a lot of them were only representing about half the bouts.
It is funny to see amateur using these weapons, most of the showcase here they just stand there to let katana to cut them. And the correct way to use spear or polearm in general is stabbing, not slashing like you are using a sword. Bottom part are also used to block but the user here totally have no idea and never use it. The net user here using it like he is using a whip or a shield LOL. And the net should have sharp hook on the other end to catch and deal damage to enemies and it is quite deadly but it isn't here... You should always be swinging a weapon like flail to keep the momentum and ready to strike anytime, but the user didn't do it here. Also it should be heavy enough to stun katana user on clash, you are using something so light to showcase and misleading people here. You should do some research before showing people here.
It really depends on what time of polearm the opponent is using. In a real combat situation, parrying the swing from a halberd or flail with your sword isn't a good idea...
It's not unbeatable, just very hard. You can see the inexperience the opponents have against the sword user, such as not utilizing their reach, not reacting fast enough, slashing instead stabbing etc. There are many methods of countering long-ranged weapons and vice versa. Though the spear may have inherent advantage, it all comes down to skill and experience, and with respect to the duelers here but the difference between experience here is very evident. And not to mention these clips are selective for the purpose of showcasing swordfighting against spears, like a fighting game player only posting clips of their weaker character winning against inexperienced players. It's not bad or malicious by any means, but for simple education and entertainment.
Yeah the problem with those western channel guys is that they don't do enough mixed weapons sparring. Thus they start getting really good at using the reach of the point which obviously is a disadvantage against the spear. With time and enough practice they'll get better at using the sword at shorter range against long range weapons.

You can definitely beat a spear with a sword. But it is MUCH easier to do it the other way around.
Probably the Most accurate thing i have seen today

I think they did do a war fan against unarmed, but I too would wanna see it against a sword. It's one of my favorite "exotic" weapons, heheh.

Some of the ranged weapon wielders freeze after striking, instead of withdrawing or continuing to attack, so it almost looks staged sometimes.
i think it is lack of experience, i have figthed in amateur hema tournaments at conventions, and some people are afraid to attack after making moves
