Hornsby was from Virginia. He wrote a lot about racism in the south in a thoughtful - not preachy- manner. And he’s an absolutely amazing pianist. More of Bruce please.
Dude! Ive watched a lot of reactors, much less now than i used to but youre one of the few i still watch and thats for a reason: Youre one of the most eloquent, insightful, well-read reactors ive ever seen. You have the most basic, budget setup and yet you consistently produce actual content of the highest quality. Ive touched on this briefly before but you just keep on doing it over and over.
I agree! And I consider myself a bit of a reactor connoisseur! 😂 I have a background in music and the 80s/90s music industry, so I find it fascinating to see the younger generations react to this music. At the same time, I’ve discovered some great newer bands like Nothing But Thieves, Muse, Betcha and more.
Completely agree. I’ve said this before, but I never thought my favorite reactor would be some shirtless dude, half my age, with an infectious smile and positive attitude. But, here I am. His insights are a breath of fresh air to this slightly curmudgeonly, middle aged, sarcastic guy.
I throw this song at reactors a lot!! There's so many songs out there that were sampled by rappers! I love seeing the recognition on people's faces when they realize!! Love it!! ❤️
Bruce did a very nice thing. When the Grateful Dead lost our beloved Brent Mydland (the Deads 3rd keyboardist to pass), Bruce joined the band to get us through.
My mom used to tell me stories of when I was a little kid they had drinking fountains for whites and another for "colored." I'm 65 now and things have changed somewhat but we still have a way to go. The best line in this songs says, "but don't you believe them." This song is as perfect as a song gets. The lyrics are spitting truth but that piano is incredible! One of my all time favorites. Great reaction as usual Shon.
In the 80s and 90s we called it stealing, not sampling. He didn’t get permission to use Hornsby’s composition but Hornsby did endorse the usage after hearing Tupac’s song.

I like your work and attitude and hope some of the negative comments on this one do not get to you personally. It takes big balls or a complete lack of sensitivity to come onto a gifted young black man’s channel and complain about rappers. You have bent over backwards to immerse yourself in popular music performed by bands long before you were born. I appreciate that a great deal, young man.
You should listen to Bonnie Raitt featuring Bruce Hornsby.. I can’t make you love me. His piano mastery and Bonnie’s iconic voice is fire 🔥… great reactions!! 👍👍👍👍👍
Have seen him play live many times. He is truly amazing. The way he uses syncopation and the piano as both a melodic and a percussion instrument just blows me away. Sometimes he makes you feel like there are actually 4 hands playing, rather than two. Not to mention he has a great voice, as well, and plays many genres even within a single show.
Great reaction. When you do listen to the Tupac version again just realize that taking the phrase "But don't you believe them" out of the song, completely changes it.
Best part about seeing how you react to this song, and others, is-back in the day, these songs were just in regular rotation on radio stations, these weren't special events, this was just the music of the time.
