    I couldn’t agree more! My very young grandchildren (ages 4 to 9) practice on cheap paper and I have them do their finish art on 100% cotton ( usually Arches). Huge difference .

    Another use case for rough paper is accentuating granulating paints.

    On a side note . I didn’t realize at first that there was a cover sheet. I thought yuk! This paper has a blue cast and no texture. 🙄🤣. Relieved to find wonderful textured paper under it!

    Hullo Liz, this is a wonderful example of the differences between watercolor paper surfaces! You have a lovely example of soft press paper that I have only seen in England from Saunders/Waterford and I have enjoyed it but it is quite expensive over here in the USA. I do wonder if you have ever tried any? I first used some soft press paper that I purchased from a neighbor that had passed away and her kids did not want any of her supplies and when I went to get more, I discovered how unique it was! Well this is a truly lovely video on paper surfaces, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!

      glad you enjoyed it. I have used Saunders and it is a lovely cotton paper made at the same mill as Bockingford, which is what I tend to use

    I'd love for you to discus the effects of sizing on watercolor paper. This seems, to me, a major reason why I often prefer one brand of paper over another.

    I’m currently using a sketchbook (made by myself) with mixed media paper. It has been working fine, but I seem to be using watercolour more and more, so I was thinking of making my next book out of watercolour paper. Until watching this, I thought I wanted hot press paper, but now I’m thinking maybe I want cold press (does anyone make Luke-warm press or tepid press? Haha)

    • @LizChadertonStudio
      @LizChadertonStudio  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      hee hee… some are more tepid than others! putting watercolour paper in your next book is a great idea. I do that with my concertinas and perfect bound books. or do a loose binding and put a mix? like this th-cam.com/video/dk_Jah4CChc/w-d-xo.html

    I have tried lots of cotton papers, including the high flier, Arches, I still go back to @meedens cotton papers. Even though they r on the block I take them off the block, draw my picture and then 'stretch' it on a ply board with the brown, ungummed, packing tape that u to water to activate the gum to make it sticky. This I have found the best for me, for landscapes when working on #meedens cold and rough pressed paper and botanicals on hot and cold pressed paper. Its a wonderful paper and I cant sing it praises enough.
    Thank u Liz for the info....I could have done with this video when I was starting out 2 years ago....but I guess my own experimentation has led me to my own preferences, which we will all have. Very many artists here on u tube love Arches and that's their go to paper. love Alli XXXXX

    Thanks for this video, painting the same things on three different surfaces was really illustrative ;)
    But the big question I ask myself is this: Is there any way of judging the quality of paper in the shop, just by look and feel? Especially since you said there are bad cotton papers and good wood pulp papers - how do I find the good papers without buying a block of each brand and trying them all?

    • @LizChadertonStudio
      @LizChadertonStudio  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Quite a few places do sample packs. Or a good art shop will sell individual sheets. Or trade with fellow painters? The issue is that different papers suit different styles too, so it is worth trying a few just to see how you get on
