      I was thinking the same! But I guess if you’re not worried about the bottom of the case, then it’s not as big of a deal

    A good basic cleanup of what is a nice, intact piece. However, I recommend a more forgiving working surface. You can always put down a piece of plywood, leather, or even cardboard to keep from damaging your workpiece.

    I believe the mirror is an original part of the luggage. Otherwise it wouldn’t fit snuggly on top. This is most likely a vanity luggage box where you keep your makeup and toiletries.

      Just did a quick google and found it. Your correct. If you search Shwayder Bros Samsonite vintage train case it pretty much confirms it. Its the smallest in a set of 5 from about the 1940's-1950's. Ebay suggests its current price ranges from $30 to $60.

      I just picked up one these, exactly the same, in great condition for £2 ($2.50-$3.00). Somebody had taken it to the local dump/recycling centre where they resell items which still have some life left in them. They originally came with a plastic tray insert to hold small items/hairbrush but can be repurposed for a variety of uses.

      yeah ive since realized that, but i dont need it so i'll keep it for other projects. maybe mount it on the wall as a stationary mirror or use it for an experiment. i just worry about if im carrying a big camera in this box it might break the mirror.

    If you end up needing to repair the stitching, a leather hand stitcher works really well. I have a full set of this luggage that I have completely restored - including the hatbox case! And, yes... the mirror was original to the train case. Also, Murphy’s Oil Soap works much better for cleaning - available at the grocery.

    • @alexisgeorgeson7008
      @alexisgeorgeson7008 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have any tips on reshaping the hatbox case? I have the samsonite one and it’s a bit become quite warped over time.

    • @vickiefowler1429
      @vickiefowler1429 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alexisgeorgeson7008 … since I posted here, my hatbox was damaged in a tornado (got soaked)! I’m still trying to find a way to repair that damage. The only thing I’ve come up with is steaming one side and then laying it flat against a sturdy surface with weights on top. Then doing the other side. But, as mine stands right now… I’m going to have to replace the lining as well. Good luck with yours!

    • @alexisgeorgeson7008
      @alexisgeorgeson7008 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A tornado?! That is wild. I’m glad it survived and I hope repairing the lining isn’t too onerous. I will try using heat and weights, thank you for the tip! The hatbox was my grandma’s and was in our attic for a while and I think that led to the damage.

    PS I sometimes put a tissue with several drops of lavender or lemon essential oils , inside the vintage case, to ameliorate the musty smell.

    You can use acetone to strip old varnish off of top-coated leather to even out the color. You can then use a leather dye or polish to adjust the color as you see fit.

    Also on the luggage case it says JMB on it, is that someone's initials?

    This is super random but when you put that 1000w wheel kit on your trike did you have to do anything extra to use a lipo battery pack with it? Trying to do one for my father and just needed to know.

    • @RinoaL
      @RinoaL  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      no, the 48v motors can take anywhere from 42v to 52v, and then some. they are actually designed with a lot of range for the voltages since they are designed for lead acid. lead acid batteries would be charged to maybe 60v but then dip down really low when being drawn from. with lithium the voltage drop is a lot less and it fits very easilly within range. i recommend going to 13-series if you can for the battery since it gives a bit more power and the BMSs are easier to get for 13s.
      dont forget to reinforce the front fork if your doing a front wheel drive, would hate for the wheel to snap off at 20mph.

    If the lining is cloth, and has stains on it, is it okay to use like a 50/50 mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide? Should you use vinegar instead? Or would mild soap and warm water do it justice? I'm so confused and so many sites are telling me different things. lol
    Thanks in advance!!
