2020 BMW X6 M50i Full Review | The Perfect Example of Form Over Function

  • 12 years ago, BMW did this weird thing where they invented the coupe SUV. Sure the Pontiac Aztek was technically the first, but that fad disappeared quickly. Yet, when a luxury German automaker does it, it seems to become a trend. Anyway, I somehow ended up with one, so let's make the best of this AMG slaying machine.

What do you guys think about the car? Do you agree with the score that we gave it? Should I have bought an AMG instead?

I dont know man, what do you think ? money asside i love the BMW, but it just feels like that AMG is just the important inch ahead this model year, regarding styling, infotainment and a little bit aggressivness. but sure, 20-30k extra maxed out may not be worth it.

You know before I make a comment I have to watch the complete video before I start blabbing BS like the man of Tesla over here who will defend that car till he dies. At first I was about to say maybe you made a bad choice on picking this car, but you actually described not only the car but the fact that you chose this because it really does suit your personality. I know people are going to say that you should have gotten the AMG but truthfully you're not a pissed-off nut who always wants more because of the sake of more. We're talking power of course. I mean the point of getting a car is to suit your personality and picking something that is not as powerful doesn't mean that you're not on top but rather that you want to get there in a different manner.
Weird enough I trade in my Mustang in for a Volvo Polestar wagon and people to this day still question me why. I only pick that car because it suited my style and the Lotus that I have on the side can't do the rugged stuff but I do on a daily basis without breaking something apart or damaging a wheel. Mind you that Dan did not pick this car to go super off-roading or what not but rather that he needed something for his family but at the same time doesn't go out of his boundary of his set personality. For what the car comes with you actually made a very amazing choice for your family and for yourself since you won't be bored driving a typical SUV with no guts and the handling of a boat. Much respect and congratulations to actually making a Fair choice in your car collection so that way you can go on with your future without compromising what you do.

I think you made the right choice. That paint color is beautiful, cognac interior and wood trim would be the perfect spec for me.

You definitely made the right choice. This thing has almost 100 horsepower on the GLE 53, and it looks and sounds far better. It's also like 1.5 seconds quicker to 60.

@ CRMXL Thanks, I really enjoyed this comment. And I think you’re absolutely right. I had a hard time because there were a few choices available at the time. It was honestly between this, an AMG or the Velar SVA. I wanted to go full AMG, but I’m not sure if it was the way. And I personally think that the Velar SVA is the perfect in-between for the BMW and AMG, but the price point just didn’t make sense. They wouldn’t move a dime on the price and it just didn’t make sense to spend that kind of money at this point in time. I had also considered the Volvo V60 Polestar as an option. I wouldn’t question you why because I understand completely. I think it’s a lot of car and I wish they were more common so that I could find one near me to drive. In terms of the channel, I feel that the X6M50 may not be the most “TH-cam conscious” decision but then again, I didn’t really go about starting this channel for that purpose. I just wanted to have fun. And I think that’s what I’m going to do. I plan to do some unconventional racing/matchups with this car regardless of popularity for my own enjoyment.

I really do like the X6. Especially in this M50i version.
OK! It's not as quick as it's big brother, the X6M. But in my opinion, it has a lot more to offer.
Better seats. And by that I mean more comfy.
Softer suspension set up. I'm well over 50 years old, so comfort is a major tick on a wants list.
Rear wheel steering for better turning circles and better stability at high speeds.
But still has 90% of the X6M's performance.
Oh! And it also has the lit front grill too. Who doesn't want a lit front grill? :-))...

I think you're right and the X6 is getting more attractive. I wish Lexus did something like this where they made a real "F" version of the RX, UX, or even GX. With the 5.0L V8 and 467HP engine, it would be a formitable opponent in this market space.

This has got to be the most ACCURATE review of this car.
I’ve owned several BMW’s and also had the X6. I’m now driving the X5 and was considering going back to X6 but some of the weakness mentioned in the video are exactly what’s holding me back. Other options Velar, MB, Porsche…etc are just not the best “bang for your buck”. The only comparable option would be the Audi SQ8 but the aggressiveness isn’t even close to the X6.
Also it’s so disappointing that BMW discontinued the Riverside Blue colour!!
Anyway, nicely done review; keep it up!

High quality cinematic and entertaining car review experience. Your videography and presentation style remind me of Cars With Luke, though absent the glorious Swiss Alps - yeah, he's surely lucky there! I still think the Audi and Porsche coupes have better design symmetry...but I have to agree that there is something about the "OG", the X6, that does grow on you. In terms of the AMG Mercs, it's a shame that they have pulled almost all V8 production out of North America for 2022.
Approaching the 1.5 year mark since you dropped this initial video, I would be curious to know, what are your updated thoughts on ownership experience?
The N63, and now S63 M variant, are truly impressive high performance twin-turbo V8s. However, the N63 (particularly in the 50i models) also has a notorious history - whether due to customer negligence or not - for excessive oil consumption, cooked cylinders/heads (resulting in a class action settlement). Considering BMW invented the hot vee engine architecture, one would hope they have since mastered most of its problematic areas. I'm hopeful that you continue to enjoy your beautifully equipped M50i...and that the exotic model has become that special "girlfriend" whose dependability and personality continue to put a smile on your face!!

@Robin Singh Thanks man! I’m gonna be honest with you. If I didn’t need to carry a baby seat, I would’ve gotten the M850i. I was so close to convincing my wife that we could fit the seat in the back, but in all my research, it would’ve been difficult. So all in all, M850i is a better fun car, X6M50 is the better all around daily.

Awesome, thorough, and beautiful review. Hope to see many awesome cars reviewed in this same format in the future! Reviewing your own car, it can be hard to be impartial, but it seems like you were able to be honest which is great. As for the looks, I used to be in the "why would anyone buy this" camp, but I think the new model does look much better than the early ones. I'd still take an X5 but the 6 is definitely more unique.

    • @FCTDmotorenvy
      @FCTDmotorenvy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks, this format is quite intensive and a lot of work to be honest. Not sure if it’s sustainable at the level this channel is at currently. Anyway, it’s interesting, one of the reasons why I enjoy this car is because I see them less often. The other day I went out for a drive in the X6 and I must’ve seen 4 other G05 (2019-2020) X5s driving around. It was nice knowing I was the only G06 X6 in the area.

    • @dsher503
      @dsher503 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Track Day I can see how it’d be a ton of work. It’s definitely appreciated though. Maybe save it for cars you buy or ones that you truly love. You probably have some of those X5 drivers wishing the got the 6! I’ve been debating for a long time between the C63s F80 M3 comp pack and the Giulia Quadrifoglio for my next daily. I think the Giulia ticks a lot of the boxes looks wise for me that the X6 did for you. One of the most beautiful cars I’ve ever seen, especially in the Tri coat Red. I’ve only ever seen one QV on the road and it just feels that much more special when the only people who look at you are car enthusiasts. Just not sure if the sirens call of the Amg V8 will be too much for me. Ideally I’d have the QV for an automatic daily and a Gt350 for my manual V8 kicks. Anyway I appreciate the response and keep up the good work!

    • @FCTDmotorenvy
      @FCTDmotorenvy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@Dsher503 Thanks, that’s a good idea. I think that’s what I’ll do. I think I’ll enjoy a 15-20 minute review of say a Camaro ZL1 1LE over doing one with something like a Honda Accord Sport. In terms of the trio you mentioned, it’s a hard sell between the C63S AMG vs Giulia QV for me. One hand I love the way the Giulia drives and it’s truly a wonderful experience. On the other hand, the V8 AMG exhaust note is intoxicating. F80 M3 is not my jam at all. I’m finishing up a video on the M4CS and although it was fun, it’s just didn’t excite me the same way the Giulia did. Good luck with the decision!

    • @dsher503
      @dsher503 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@FCTDmotorenvy Yeah that would be a good balance. I wasn't even sure you guys would review an Accord Sport haha but I'm sure some people would enjoy those videos. Thanks for the input. I'm leaning towards the Giulia because it does seem like the fun factor is much higher than the AMG driving dynamics wise and it's so unique. I think I would only be missing the V8 sound and nicer interior but I honestly don't think I really need something as nice as the AMG interior until I'm quite a bit older. I've also heard the Giulia sounds great too, especially for a factory V6. Something about not having to pay more to have the car delimited and that it goes to 191 makes me want to throw some money Alfa's way. I'm just hoping the reliability has been improving with each QV model year. How did it sound to you in person and did you guys have the Ceramic brakes? I'd want to occasionally track my car, no matter which I decided on, and was curious if you had an opinion on them for the Alfa or any of the others from experience? I'll be excited to watch the F80 review/video. I love the look/interior of the F80 and I've heard great things about the gearbox on track. It just seems that the exhaust is the weakest of the 3 and I've heard mixed things about the steering feel. I've heard the Comp pack and CS ironed out lots of the "problems" others had but I'm curious to see your thoughts. I feel like I would have looked a lot harder at the CS if it wasn't priced so crazily out of the box. Too many great cars to choose from right now but I guess that's a good problem to have.

    • @dsher503
      @dsher503 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Also to curb my AMG craving, I've been thinking about picking up a W204 C63 for a bit so I won't be thinking about the C63s while driving the Giulia.

The X3M is faster, but not by a tremendous bit. You’ll only see the difference in a head to head race. Around town and even partial throttle, the X6 feels faster because of the V8, powerband, and tremendous amount of torque. My opinion is that it sounds better as well, even though half of it is indeed artificial.

  • @robertaldanapresents

I was first looking to buy the new 911 but because of the back seats that my kids could not fit in, and the fact that we live in the mountains where all wheel drive is needed along with ruggedness, at the last moment I changed my mind.
So I went to look at the Cayenne and did not even drive it. The interior was as boring as painting a room white that was already white.
I then went to see and drive the X6 m50i because I’ve always liked them even though I kind of wanted a Mercedes.
So I next went to the AMG 53 and got in, interior was nice but that shifter on the side of the steering wheel and the mousepad in the center counsel did not move me. The seats were nice but felt like I was on a nice big comfy couch.
Then I drove it. But the problem was I drove it after I had driven the X6 m50i and I have to say that it did not compare. The sound, the drive, the power were all just ok.
Cargo space was no biggie, it has what I need and if we need more space I just bought my wife the new X7 (Arctic Grey with white interior) so that solved that.
So $100k later I just got the 2021 in Tanzanite Blue which fluctuates from navy blue to electric blue depending on lighting. Just gorgeous.
I got the upgraded coffee leather (forgot the name) and executive package with glass knobs and buttons, etc. I have never gotten brown interior, I always go black, or if I want to go flashy I go white like I did for my wife’s X7. But this brown spoke to me.
I LOVE driving this car. And I think it’s beautiful, and money well spent. I’ll probably keep it for about 3 years until the X8 comes out.
Your video was epic. You are a natural. Well done!

Great video Dan. Although I wouldn't consider you old, it sounds like you made a pretty damn good compromise. As we all get older, we also get wiser and some choices are dictated by life more than by pure choice. I am more of an AMG guy simply because I own Mercedes but at the end of the day, you chose the BMW for multiple reasons and the price difference has to be factored in when you make the final call. There aren't a lot of X6 up where I live but it does catch my eye when I see one. Bang for the buck is the most important thing to me because let's face it, money is not unlimited.

I really would’ve liked to go the route of a 2020 GLC63S AMG, it was on the short list, but wife just wasn’t into the interior. I hope to join the AMG club as well some point soon. I always rave about the exhaust note. I have no specific brand loyalty so maybe on the next one it’ll happen.

The X6 really lives at the intersection of sports car, luxury sedan, and SUV.
Given your performance standards, I'm surprised you didn't choose an M550i or M5 instead, since the X6 doesn't really offer much more backseat space or cargo capacity.

But if it was just for myself as a dedicated “dad” car, it would’ve been an E63S AMG Wagon, no questions asked. After driving that Audi RS6 in Spain, I fell in love with the wagon concept and I can’t go back to a sedan (maybe a sportback). Regardless, I’m excited about the X6 because it’s sort of flies under the radar and no one ever wants to race me, so I like to surprise people on the road sometimes.

      Track Day
The X6 actually makes a lot of sense if it’s primarily for the wife. I have a sporty daily driver for me, and I make sure my wife has something that is functional but doesn’t bore me to death! ✌️

I love BMW and own an e92 myself, but unfortunately they have failed to keep what made their brand great. Driver connection to the road and steering feel have fallen to the wayside and large kidney grills following trends and appeasing Asian buyers abroad have taken over. I hate to say it but the Porsche cayenne turbo s 2020 would’ve been well worth the extra dough and cured the driver engagement issue. In this new age of electric over hydraulic steering.. only Porsche can stand out to the driving enthusiasts in my opinion.

@Mark A It's true. They've fallen a little far from their roots. But this weird fantacisim with Asian drivers and BMWs is also bizarre. The only reason my parents bought BMWs was to show off to other Asians, where as I always actually personally advocated fornAudis.

Hi, I had the same car 2020 in black carbon,
    Few issues,
    1. horrible noise from the wheels on the highway.witch didn’t happened in my old shape X6. In the old shape driving was much quiet.
2.to many blind spots/ bad visibility , back (we know) rear sits can’t see anything, front left and right, you really need to watch and take extra space from the carve,
    3. To many bags in the system,
    4. Apple care/Bluetooth always stuck and disconnect, you have to call bmw service to fix it,
    5. Wireless charging is totally JOKE, it’s not really charging your phone (must be iPhone not android..) also when it’s get hot forget about if thinking to charge your phone..
    6. When you get out of your car make sure your back legs not getting dirty (when it should be the running boards,
It’s not an SUV it’s SAV (sport activity’s vehicle) limited space,
You will be surprised but I trade in to old shape X6M 😎 much better. And cheaper.

@Stefan Esau I bought the X6M50 for my wife. There’s a lot to like about the X4M, we drove an X3M for review on the channel and it’s essentially the same thing. But she needed some tech features and the X4M didn’t have remote start. GLC63S AMG was on the short list for me, but she didn’t like the interior.

Great video! I agree with your take. I fell in love with the knock-off, Acura ZDX and have driven the top of the line Advance model for over 10 years as a daily driver now. Still love it, plus it has Jap reliability, but no V8. I have never owned a European car, only Jap and American, but I am falling for the X6 for fear these big V8's will disappear in the near future. I love the blue and will likely seek that, along with black leather. Yea, the X5 with the same motor is fine, but SUV's all look the same to me, for I am a big coupe-look fan. Again, great video! Your shots, angles, and commentary are excellent. Thank you!

Alright did the grille just light up with the car? What the shit 😂
Well I’m here. Hope all is well, nice color choice
The first X6 was extremely appealing
I like the aggressive look of it, looks a little fat ish from the side, but it’s an SUV
Lol you’re not an old man
Yeah the TTRS has fake vents now too lol but they look dope
    5,100 lbs holy shit
And yeah you’re dreaming if you expect lotus handling lol
    Sounds great btw
    523hp is no joke
    Oh man that sound
Bro that thing weighs so much and almost beats the TTRS lmao
    Low end torque is awesome
That’s crazy 160mph in that big fucker
Yeah the exhaust note is priceless on this thing, sounds pissed off
Bmw has always had that lowkey sound for some reason, ig that’s just how they are
4 wheel steering sounds dope af
Yeah that weight kills it’s handling
So the brakes aren’t very firm, interesting. Bitch has to stop 5,100 lbs
Yeah man the weight again, shit
That thing was designed to be fast and comfy. Crazy
Oh man massaging seats. That chair must cost $3,000 alone
    That’s cool, torque vectoring
Need to check it out if I come up there
I’d be looking forward the most to the exige tho
I like the simplicity of the interior. Most cars these days have too many screens and shit
I don’t know why they made the screen like that with the shift illusion
Terrible paddle positioning right, I figured
The laser LEDs, how are they?
Oh man augmented reality is dope as shit. Glad it has cupholders lol
Haha daughter must love the skylight
The autonomous shit is cool. You’re 5’11? I must be taller than 6 foot no offense but it seemed like you were 5’8 when we met in NYC lol
The new fenders are cool, the grille suits the SUV the X6 is, but would be too big for a 4 series or whatnot
I like the lines on the hood, the current 4 series executed that perfectly
    Those headlights are cool
The X6 has a nice status quo for what it is
Nice warranty, I assume you’re gonna void it when you go to modding lol
That sucks, wish the aftermarket was more in depth, that’s crazy they’re hitting so much power with so little
I like how we see more of your house here. Nice house
Almost $100,000, you know I’m not an SUV guy too much, I’d probably spend $70,000 at most on any X6 M50. It’s just not practical for me personally
    Yes a Dan score
    9 I agree
8 I agree, gearbox interface is illusionating
6/10 Id say 5 maybe, but I didn’t drive it so I can’t be sure
7 is what id say, lots of body roll from what I saw
The cabin is nice, simplistic, 8 sounds about right
7 maybe I’d go 6, again I didn’t drive it but doesn’t seem like you were able to feel exactly what the car was doing
7 exterior, I’d agree. It’s pretty cool on the outside
7 curb value is about right
    9 I haven’t looked into anything aftermarket
Eh I’d still put price at a 9, could be a bit cheaper
    Smiles per gallon lol
84, not bad, I can agree mostly, maybe I’d barely give it an 80, not trying to shit on your car, just what I think that’s all, it looks nice, sounds nice and probably rides comfortably. Will be cool to see how fast she is, I hope she’s broken in lol
Nice vid man, I know it’s tough to record these long videos, so thanks for the effort. Cool to see what this SUV has to offer, but I want to know what you think of this compared to the X3M, as the 3 seemed underwhelming and it appears you’ve been impressed by this one more. Let me know if you can

    • @DanWangFilms
      @DanWangFilms 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah man, it’s nuts right? They basically didn’t wanna get left out of the fun with Mercedes and Infiniti. Although it only turns on at night, I think it looks pretty dope. I’ll have to do some night shots of it at some point.
Yeah the first gen was alright, I thought it was funky, second one was better, and now this third gen finally made me a believer.
I really think it’s more than 523HP, you can see on the dash it actually hits 560HP on the HP gauge. I’ll have to race my buddy’s RS3 for a video at some point.
I think from behind, it sounds pretty damn good, but in the cabin, I can’t hear anything. Honestly, I still thing downpipes or something will be in the order soon. I never really liked the 3 liters I-6 but I really like this V8TT. Super unrated IMO.
Jesus man, this essay is long AF. Might be your longest one yet. I thought I was almost done, but I’m not even half way lol.
The Laser LEDs are decent. My wife likes them cuz she has a harder time seeing at night than I do. The heated and cooled cup holders are a little too flex IMO lol.
Yeah, I slouch a lot. I’m medically 5’11”. You’re prob 6’ for sure. Age also makes you slightly shorter (hence why I’m an old man now). My uncle is also 5’11” but I’m taller than him now.
Hopefully I don’t void any warranties. I want to do some minor stuff that’s easily reversible and untraceable.
I initially would’ve put 5 as the handling, but after throwing it around, it actually handles really good, it just doesn’t feel like it. So it’s more of a driver confidence thing.
Price on this car is a weird place because if you compare it in the segment it was meant to be in (GLE580/Cayenne S/Q8) it’s expensive, but the problem is that it outperforms all those cars and goes straight for the big boys (GLE AMG/Cayenne Turbo/P100D) and it beats the shit out of those in value.
You have to remember, the score is not an overall car score, it’s a score in that segment. If it was a score as an overall car, I’d probably put it in the 70s.
I’ll do a comparison video at some point maybe between the two cars.

    • @noblevengeance312
      @noblevengeance312 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Dan Wang a vid with an RS3 should be dope. The two would be close in your acceleration tests, but the RS3 is still probably gonna have an edge because, well, it’s 1,400 lbs lighter. And yeah, the longer the essay, the better. I honestly can’t wait to see the performance review on this one, I feel like it’ll exceed our expectations
What score does your wife think the car should get? I’m curious about what she thinks too
I’ll be watching your vid for a Second time to find any hidden things I may have missed while looking at my keyboard 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
