Thanks for the history lesson. I was playing Squad Leader, along with other Avalon Hill war games, back in my High School days. Back then I couldn't afford Advanced Squad Leader, but I read all about it in the Avalon Hill catalog. I purchased my first Avalon Hill game from our local hobby shop, Joe's Hobby shop.

I have all the Squad Leader games and damn near all the ASL stuff. Have all the "The General" Avalon Hill Mags. Ten plastic boxes full of carefully trimmed counters and have not even unboxed some "Gung Ho" and "Code of Bushido". Have the ASL journals. The big expansion games "Pegasus Bridge", Kampigruppe Pieper", I was hooked big time. Very complicated, but very interesting. 99% solitary play for me. Played some scenarios hundreds of times (or so it seems) and others not at all. This was all years ago but I still break it out from time to time.
I remember the tactical challenges and contests in "The General" Magazine where you submitted your solution by mail, to be answered in the next edition. The scenario replays, etc..
Avalon Hill, the greatest game company of all time.

Funny you mention the contests. I just pulled up an old General contest. The first one, in fact. From way back in 1986. Makes me want to pull out a map and some counters and see what I can come up with :)

I remember all those game, Had all of them except ASI. I believe I still have them at my mother's house. Did I have fun, even though I was like 12 yrs old. I really didn't understand how to play the really detail rules, but knew the basic. Didn't matter love the game..

I am trying to find the expansion to Advanced Squad Leader Yanks. In that book from what I was told had a price list for a DIY for the American Armies.

Great video! I just purchased the BV and already had the rules set, where to go next? I really like to fight in the Desert!

      Thank you.
I really need to do another video.
So, where next? I would recommend Yanks, module 3a. With it, you will have the 3 biggest belligerents in the war.
Desert Rules are amazingly fun to play. Sadly, it's a few years before you can get copies of the rules. That said, if you can find West of Alamein, get it!

Hello, I remember playing these games in the 80s. When you said there’s a tournament in Cleveland at Oktoberfest it’s really caught my interest. I live in Cleveland all actually a suburb of Cleveland Middleburg Heights. I do have a question. Where do I even find this game to purchase? And also your videos are fantastic.!!

Thank you. To check out ASLOK, find their site. I think it's aslok.org.
To buy modules, go to multimanpublishing.com. They have just re issued Beyond Valor. Check them out!

I still need the ASL rule book correct? I went to the different sites. I can’t believe the tournament is 5 miles away. I think I’ll gear up and get a fission at the game that way I can attend next year. I’ve been trying to get my 13-year-old son into board gaming. He likes Strat o Matic , but he has interest in history of wars.
