Fun fact: In the Japanese Dub of the Z Broly movie Paragus explained that Broly actually sensed Goku's power when he first arrived on the trap planet/New Planet Vegeta (Specifically in the scene where they were sizing each other up and everything faded to black except for them and their auras.) and that caused his saiyan instincts to go out of control which made him see Goku as a powerful opponent he wanted to fight and kill, the crying had nothing to do with it. He says quote, "Could it be Kakarrot? Does this mean that Broly's instincts as a saiyan have been awakened by Kakarrots power, and he is starting to overcome my mind control?" Also in the JP dub he only knows Goku's saiyan name because Vegeta said it right in front of Broly. Broly also only starts remembering Goku right when he is defeated. Also for people who keep misreading my comment, Broly didn’t get his saiyan instincts unlocked until he sensed Goku as an adult, Baby Goku had nothing to do with it!

You can write a dissertation on the irreperable damage that Second Coming did to Broly as a character, I swear. He was never a mindless rampaging beast. He was a sadistic, brutal, psychopathic, nigh-unstoppable monster. And that got lost for something so much worse.
Lemme level with you as a sci fi writer, Broly is actually well written because he is SIMPLE. Think of the classic rule, show don’t tell. What happens alot with shonen in general is the exposition of abilities, backstories, and general motives/goals. It is not necessarily a bad thing. Other genres also play with this formula too, so it is not unusual. But not Broly. Almost all of Broly’s exposition is done by his father, a ‘flawed narrator’. He loves his son, I think at least enough to see him as a symbol of sayain pride. granted, he is not naive on his son’s danger to himself and others. It is not frankly unusual he made a mind control crown since Broly is shown to be a psychopath. Like, actually. He shows no empathy and has no social understanding of the idea of friends or even family. He literally crushed his dad to death! Frankly, his mother which we never see probably has a nicer fate being blown up by Freeza. Broly is a sadist. He is a gifted fighter, but not out of experience like someone like Goku or Piccolo or someone with immense talent like Vegeta or Gohan. He just is gifted because he doesn’t have any moral or psychological scrupples. He will run you over with a fucking football tackle before he even ‘thought’ of what it can do. He is unimpeded. And that is why he is a great villain. But admittedly, his fanbase loves him a bit too much. Most DBZ misinfo I have seem usually comes either from here or the Janemba movie or with Buu or whatever. Definitely memorable and should be studied. Also, hot take, the second movie wasn’t that bad. Simply because Biobroly exists. And yeah. second coming is like, still maybee 3rd worst overall dragon ball movie, but it was pretty solid if you like Gohan. Which I do, so.
People need morally gray or tragic/relatable villains these days for them to be 'good' villains Z Broly was menace and a psychopath because he KNEW was more powerful than anyone else and not a damn person could stop him
Broly had so much character. Until the next two movies where they made him just a mindless wordless freak. But in the first one he actively taunts and laughs and his opponents.
People seem to forget that this complaint doesn't come from the original Broly movie, but from the next 2. Z fumbled the character harder than katchin.
It's crazy the amount of hyperbole people use to describe dbz. "All they do is yell", "Goku is a bad father", "Broly has zero personality", etc. Just inaccurate.
I feel like this is a very odd use of the word Modernity it's more like most people are losers now (for a variety of reasons) that hate everything to make themselves feel better.
@extremepop324 tbh, most Z films are ass. I'd need to rewatch some of them, but I do remember Tree of Might, Battle of Gods, and Fusion reborn being pretty enjoyable (Hell, BoG is still in discission for the best DB Film imo). But the rest are either easily forgettable (Lord Slug, Android 13, both Cooler movies, Resurrection of F) or are actually terrible, whether it be due to writing mistakes, boring characters or Both (In the case of Wrath of the Dragon, All 3 OG broly films, Boujack reborn).
Z-Broly was a saiyan at heart; resentful towards his father, but a saiyan nonetheless. Kinda opposite of Trunks, whose Super Saiyan 3rd Grade was the inspiration for him.
Z Broly is truly the bloodlust side of a typical Saiyan mind. Aggressive, Ruthless, No care for any life on a planet. It's no wonder King Vegeta was terrified of him even when he was just a baby. The potential bloodlust within a Saiyan....it's absolutely terrifying to experience.
@@WarmLusamine I don't think I need to elaborate on why the likes of Frieza and Cell make for much, much better antagonists for their respective stories than Broly right?

I can see both sides here. Broly was (even with the clarity of what his ACTUAL backstory and behavior is) pretty stupid. Even though Goku’s crying triggers memories of his time with King Veggie, that still wouldn’t have his name set him off, or even have him recognize him most likely. No, you clearly can’t see both sides here because you’re literally missing the fact that they’re rivals, BORN rivals, saiyans born on the same day are destined to be rivals, the whole smoke between him and Goku was a RIVALRY, albeit a pretty rough one (they’re saiyans so it explains) go and watch the movie again bruh, Goku and broly were battling in spirit as babies, and Goku was winning, hence the reason why when they met broly became all types of uncomfortable, there was a scene of this guy sweating his ass off as if he was AFRAID of what he had encountered hours earlier

I mean, if thats true, its an explanation i suppose. A really bad one, because I’m not even sure how thats supposed to work.. plus goku had actual amnesia, I’m not sure how that would work out. Its also just kinda out of the blue and confusing, they don’t really have a rivalry either, Goku gets his ass beat as much as everyone else, wins, and then literally never fights him ever again. He says quote, "Could it be Kakarrot? Does this mean that Broly's instincts as a saiyan have been awakened by Kakarrots power, and he is starting to overcome my mind control?"
Also in the JP dub he only knows Goku's saiyan name because Vegeta said it right in front of Broly. Broly also only starts remembering Goku right when he is defeated. Also for people who keep misreading my comment, Broly didn’t get his saiyan instincts unlocked until he sensed Goku as an adult, Baby Goku had nothing to do with it!
