    Long ago, I got to ride in a real 427 Cobra. It was cramped, hot, and really loud. The greatest experience in my life!!

    I bought a 1964.5 Mustang coup 'A' code in 1970 for $600. It had the wheels that are on this beautiful 'hi-po' GTA and was the green color of the '66 fastback here. It also had the rally pack with a 6,000 rpm tach. Within 2 years, that car would leave a GTA standing. We used the same solid lifter camshaft, bumped the compression a point and used a Ford racing dual-point mechanical advance distributer(stock on the GTA and GT350 was a single point mechanical advance distributer). Edlebrock medium riser called the Torantula with a Holley 600cfm vacuum secondary(that we rigged mechanical at the track)carb. Douglas headers, Schaffer aluminum flyweel and heavy clutch. 4.60 rear gear and traction bars. You could carry a wheelie for 1st and 2nd gear. Wasn't a night street racing in the early '70s that people didn't have us pull over and prove it was a little ole 289 in that car. Usually always after we beat them.😊
    Edit: @ 29:30...wrong. The car above when I bought it had a 289 4-barrel carb but had a single exhaust. Had to put the dual exhaust on it which is a whole other story.

    Guess what Dennis? When I saw this video, it took me back to my college days also! One of my college friend's Dad owned a Ford dealership in Albany, NY. One semester he shows up with this very car, though it was a 429 Super Cobra Jet with 4:30 rear end and a 4 spd. That was one very fast and beautiful car - same color as this. Thanks for stirring the memories!

    Ahhhh DeSoto, i started Racing at the drag strip in 1971 when i was 16, it was then Don Garlets new home track and thr first time i won my class, Don Garlets was standi g next to the guy handing out checks, he passed me my check, it meant a lit to me, he was my hero. Back then if you had a pit pass you could stand elbow to elbow with Garlets while he refreshed his fngine between passes, it was somjych different then.
    Anyway i later raced on that circle track but the magic of earlier times was gone

    28:25 - Bob Perkins is still around, they did a video with him a few years back with a prototype 71 Boss 302 that someone found, and he had a ton of NOS parts for one because it almost made production before Ford canceled it. He would go around to Ford dealers and buy up NOS parts, and has a huge inventory of them.

    I can’t believe how lucky I am!! I found your channel a few days ago and I’ve been binge watching ever since!! lol I just finished watching your Mopar compilation and before that it was the Chevy compilation lol
    I just can’t stop myself! Lol.
    I’m blessed to have family members that swear by their particular passion brand/make of American cars.
    I’ve also been fortunate enough to have owned cars and trucks from each of the main companies. I currently have a RAM truck that I purchased to pull my travel trailer when I retired and it also takes my grandson and I fishing, camping, hunting and just general outdoors stuff lol.
    I also had the one Chevy Suburban that was built to last lol. It was a 1994 Chevy Suburban Silverado 6.5 ltr turbo diesel 2500 in Chevy Champagne thats gold paint to us mortals lol. I purchased it new and drove it for 21 years! lol In all those years the only thing I did was regular oil changes, new filters (fuel and air), and replaced the batteries once (dual battery setup). That was all it ever asked of me in just over 400,000 miles.
    I couldn’t stand to sell it as it had become part of the family so I gave it to my son. He’s now raising his sons in it just like I raised him in it lol. I took that Suburban everywhere you can imagine from Disneyland to deserts, mountains of the Pacific Northwest to the Everglades of south Florida, Chinatown San Francisco to Big Sky Montana. I drove it in 49 states plus Canada. It was 2 wheel drive but several times I used it to rescue someones 4x4 that had gotten stuck somewhere lol.
    Anyways, my dad (stepfather) was a Corvette guy and always had at least one in his garage ever since the very first one rolled off the assembly line lol. For awhile he had a pair of red corvettes, one had a T top and the other was a convertible. Both of the same year with the same colour and same interior. I drove his silver 1963 Corvette from the church I was married in to the reception hall lol.
    As a kid my father had a series of pickup’s that he used for work and my mum had several cars over the years always white in colour. She had a 64 dodge with the push button transmission and after that she had a 1969 Mercury Montego that would blow the doors off anything dumb enough to race it! lol I said all that to make the point that it doesn’t matter which brand/make of vehicle you swear by as long as it’s American 🇺🇸!
    I’ve owned a few foreign made cars over the years but even my family that still lives in the U.K. will tell you that the best cars all have their roots in Detroit! Whenever they came over to visit they always wanted to ride in my “estate” car lol. That’s what my Suburban is called in the U.K. because only people rich enough to have an estate can afford the fuel for one! lol
    Thank you for posting these episodes of your show which can only be described as the best car show ever made and hosted by the only guy to have ridden in more cars than Jay Leno himself! lol
    Cheers! See you at the finish line 🏁

      With those signatures that model would have a big sales price, particularly since 2 of the signers have passed. I have a nice, rare book called The Cobra Daytona Coupes. I had Shelby sign it in 2006 and Brock in in 2016 at the Lime Rock Park Historic Festival in Connecticut. I have no plans to sell it but have seen prices into the couple thousand + range on ebay.

    Ford has always been such a lively company. I could never understand why Ford was not completely dominate in the auto world. History like this video shows how Ford over come the anti media hatred of Ford. We now realize (2022), the media is 95% controlled by what Henry Ford called the International Shew. Ford was forced into underdog status and I believe this forced them into doing better than the rest. We still witness Ford as king of the pick up. But the 1960's were extremely exciting times, as the government was out of the way and Ford's marketing and engineering departments went wild... Glorious times... A testament to American ingenuity

    • @MyClassicCarTV
      @MyClassicCarTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unrestored means the car is just like it came from the factory. It hasn't been repainted, the interior hasn't been replaced, the chrome hasn't been replated, etc. Restored cars have had some or all of these things done to restore it to the same condition as it came from the factory. Unrestored original-condition cars (also referred to as "survivors") are much more rare than restored ones.

    In the 60's Ford did well. in the professional ranks. But with the exception of the rare 427 cars on the street and pure stock drag classes Ford got beat constantly by the MOPAR and GM Muscle cars. Any Ford with a 390 was an automatic loss if it faced a Pontiac GTO or Big block SS Chevellle.

    • @Loulovesspeed
      @Loulovesspeed 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Lance Lawson - I'll have to take issue with your Ford 390 being an automatic loss to a GTO. Two friends of mine in high school had these cars - both 1965, both 4 spds. The GTO was definitely quicker off the line up to around 70 mph, then the 390 Fairlane GT walked away from the Goat. That GTO topped out at around 115 while the Fairlane would run on up to 135! I'm pretty certain they both had stock diff. gears, but since they were about the same weight and horsepower, the Fairlane must have had a taller gear for that big a difference. Around town for short bursts, the GTO was king, but out on the highway it was the Ford's turn to kick ass! Great times they were for sure. A college friend had a 70 Torino Super Cobra Jet 429, 4 spd. with a 4:30 rear end and he laid waste to more than a couple MOPARS and Chevys! Like many Hi Po cars of the time, that 429 SCJ put out more than its 375 advertised HP! Sure miss those days.

    And Shelby wanted the Daytonas dumped into the North Atlantic after LeMans rather than fly them back......smh.

    Not exactly correct. Shelby detested using the 427.

      He didn't have much choice as the 289 Cobra would have been beaten by the new 427 Stingray. He must have gotten over his "detesting" of it since he had his own 427 right up until his passing, though he did have it converted to an automatic for health reasons. I'll tell you who did love it and that was the late Bob Bondurant, a former Corvette racer that Shelby coaxed away to see what he could do with a Cobra. Turns out he did a lot with them! RIP, Bob.

      The Cobras have Ford DNA.
      Much of the development work of both the 289 and especially the 427 had Ford factory engineers on the clock.

      @@ricktotz4078 - I would accurately call them just what they are - Shelby Cobras, powered by Ford, just as the fender badge says!
