And talking of Purple stones I have a question regarding Amethyst, which you say is the Purple variety of Quartz. And Rose Quartz is the pink variety. What is Pink Amethyst people are selling. Is it just a light variety of Amethyst that looks pink? Also is the Light purple amethyst called light Amethyst or Lavender Amethyst? Thankyou another fantastic lesson
Great question, Kathleen! You get two gold stars on your forehead today. You correctly state that amethyst is the purple variety of quartz and rose is the pink variety of quartz. There is no pink amethyst. Period. That is just people trying to sell other colors with the name “amethyst” in there because it is the most well-known (and relatively more expensive) variety of quartz. I can sort of accept somebody saying, “Lavender Amethyst” or “Lilac Amethyst”, because both Lavender and Lilac are words to describe a shade of Purple. But there is no such thing as pink amethyst.

I have a slab that is polished and very nice on one side but the other side is rough but when I put water on it it's beautiful. When it dries up it goes back to being very rough. Is there a treatment I can put on it to make it purple again?
Hi Thor the Car. This is completely normal. If you go to a gam show with a lot of rough or watch my episode “what does it take to be a good gemologist”, you will you need a spray bottle with water. Spraying that specimen of rough with water water gives you a better look of how that rough might look once it is polished. If you polish it all, that color will be there
A lot of what I see today on the market is to me substandard. Not the same beauty as the one I have. I've also heard that the mines are getting scarse. Mines are tapping out.

To me it looks like a pearly glacier ice with flecks of gold and splattered with volcanic ash in a star pattern. Very beautiful gemstone and heavy.
