Great review as usual, Zee. Just two things about it, a minor and a major one. The minor is about theme: “calico” is a name for both a type of textile and a type of cat. This doesn’t lend more theme to the game, but it’s nice to know. The major thing is that the game has two modes. You reviewed the more advanced one, but you can choose to play the basic game, where those initial tiles with scores are placed flipped down and you only score the cats and the buttons. That might be a more relaxed experience, if you prefer that. I backed up this game on KS and it’ll arrive soon: I’m pretty excited!
In fact, you can choose to just play with a single module if you'd like. If, for example, you wanted to play with little kids or just have a really relaxed time, you can just play with the buttons for a simple match-3 game. Or any combination. Additionally, there are easier and harder cat combinations to further customize your play experience.
I would like to say thank you to you all kickstarter backers. I never backed myself. I wait for the "kickstarter edition" to show up in online stores at a discount and free shipping. So hey, thanks to you, I get nice games for way less :-)
Great review! I’m adding it to my wish list because my daughter LOVES cats and I love quality pieces. I appreciate you letting us know it’s thinking game!! I’ll make sure to pull it out when we’re feeling up to putting our brains to work, which we all enjoy in the right setting.
@@dhkoster I looked at this game because I liked the theme and aesthetics better and I wanted something different than your Azuls and Carcassonnes (not that these are not good games). So this game is gonna fill that abstract strategy tile drafting/laying niche for me
What a great review and quick play walk-through! You mentioned you favor other games of similar genre: can you share some of those titles? I like these abstract style games and am always looking for a variety! Thanks again!!
Cats and quilts. I'm not sure themes get much better than this. Yes, it's not a swashbuckling, high action theme, but as far as pastoral themes, this one stands out among others, imho.
I am late to the party with this one. Super excited to get my hands on it, but all online vendors seem to be out of stock. Hope it comes available again soon!
saw this on a shelf at my local gamestore. wanted to get it but had to research first. Just ordered it. Any similar tile laying animal/garden games (besides hive)?
"We think that if all goes well, we should have games arriving to backers as early as the beginning of August (a couple of months before our anticipated delivery date). " I was wrong, I didn't receive a shipping notification though.

Thanks, Zee! Nice job. I'll love the game....my wife will not. She'll say that I'm "taking too long" on each turn...I guarantee it. Adding it to my wish list, though!
I backed this on Kickstarter, and the designers said it was a deliberate decision. The pattern on a calico cat clashed with the patterns on the quilt, so they opted for a cat breed with a simple pattern. Also, "calico" refers to a a type of fabric, so the title still works :). Hope that helps!
This theme would be a huge hit with my wife, but she’s not a gamer and I’m afraid she wouldn’t enjoy the complexity. While not crazy complex for gamers, I think her eyes would glaze over during a rules teach. She had trouble grokking Sagrada and never tried it again.
Zee reviewed the advance gameplay. They’re other casual ways to play without those center tiles which might help those looking for a more relax gaming experience.
First time viewer - great review. I also backed on KS as it was cat-themed and my girls love cats, so thought it would be a nice game for them. On the video, my only complaint is the FF through the game play. I realize to keep the video from being 45minutes you had to do it that way, but maybe a couple slow downs to show decision points or "why I did this" would be nice for those wanting to see actual game play. But otherwise, wonderfully done.

And if you're going to name a game Calico, then have a calico cat on the cover... silly...no brainer.
Can't wait for this to show up at my house. Thanks for the review
Same.
Just got a shipping update😁
Just got my shipping notification too. Guess I will have to be patient and play tiny epic dinosaurs until it gets here
Thanks, Zee. A beautiful game, and it seems like a fun challenge to play.

8/10 is pretty good. You said you liked some even more in this genre. Can you please mention one or two “similar” games you prefer Zee? Thanks.
Idk what his similar games are, but check out cascadia maybe.
Perhaps Azul, or Sagrada, or Carcassone, or Tsuro?

Wife and I backed the Kickstarter. I am super excited to receive my copy now.
The Kickstarter had me at Cats on Quilts 💕💕💕 excited to give it a try! Great review Zee.
As someone who loves cats, cutesy themes, and abstract games - especially puzzly abstracts! -this one checks all the boxes for me. ☺️
Like me!
There's a variant in which you take certain tiles out of the mix (making what will be available less uncertain).
I taught a friend how to play this, and it was my first time. He doesn't play alot of deep board games, he picked this up pretty quick.
Amazing Review. Thank you Zee!

I want this game just so I can display the box art because it's adorable
Thanks! Can't wait to get my copy

Cascadia! Same creators, less restrictive and puzzly than calico, but similar concept
So happy I backed this! Looks awesome, thanks!
Zee will you do a top 10 pastoral theme games please? 😀
Very funny 😅
I take it that it's on the way? I have it on pre-order.
Next month

@@NickTeri Either way is good, unlike C'MON with Blood Rage Digital Physical Pledge.
Weird that they call the game calico and then have a ginger tabby and not a calico cat on the box.
It irritates me...lol...
The quilt is calico
@@charliedc4728 Apparently the developers knew the double meaning of calico, but a calico cat on cover would make it look "too busy".
Excellent review as always Zee. I get the impression you won't be doing a solo play-through of this? I am (im)patiently 😀 waiting for my KS copy.
Zee probably not but, Mike DiLisio may give us the solo review.
Looking forward to playing this one
I love cute, thinky games. Especially cat games.
Can’t wait for my copy to be here.....Come on October!...😁👍🏻
I mean the theme seems spot on...cats and quilts, I don’t think you should knock for not liking it
He said the theme was well executed, but it just isn’t his cup of tea. An 8/10 is a good score.

What other reviews should I look for to see other games in this genre?
Patchwork, cottage garden, isle of cats...
Try the tile laying game with an elephant theme, “Kerala”
Love it 🐘
The "Take it..." line might also have a similar feel - Take it Easy!/Higher!/to the Limit! (no theme on those, though).
Spring Meadow, certainly.

This is a strangely stressful game that requires lots of planning and flexibility. We played 3 times today 😅
This was very helpful to me, thank you : )
Does it bother anyone else that the cat on the cover is not a Calico?

1:10 Hahaha, why on earth is that cat called Tecolote? (a tecolote is a kind of owl).
For the same reason they put an orange cat under the word "Calico"?
So if you backed a curtian pledge they put your cat into the game. So that is most likely one of those cats

Hi Doctor Nick!
Theme not a + ?
That’s an orange tabby on the cover- not a calico....just saying.....I’ll see myself out.

too thinky and too random, but cute
