Thanks so much for sharing a video of the actual sound! There are tons of videos about water heater issues on TH-cam but not many videos of the actual sound itself. This helped me confirm that this is the issue my water heater is having!
Richard thank you! Our hot water heater is doing exactly this. Making the popping noises and we've had no idea what the problem was. Out hot water heater is only 5 years old and it seemed odd that it would be having problems this early. When it was installed the tech had the temperature turned up almost to the hottest setting and the water was scalding within an extremely short period of time. I had to turn it down by 40%! Now that I know what the problem is I can deal with the installer from a much more informed position. Again, thank you very much. The best to you and yours. M. B.
Thank you very much 👍🏻 I just woke up at 4 in the morning due to this sound. Took some time to figure out that it was coming from the water heater. Had to shut off the water supply and then found your video 👍🏻
I bought this water heater th-cam.com/users/postUgkx8G49mV71sAzUl9shXyLW-r3XgHH9EVh1 for use in my bus conversion. I installed it under my kitchen sink and it is fed by a high efficiency on-demand LP water heater. It is both a backup hot water source as well as a water saving device since we have hot water on demand rather than having to wait for the gas on demand water heater to finish its ignition cycle. I decided on this water heater due to the fact that it only draws 1300watts when it's ON instead of the 1500 watts that most Water heaters this size draw. In an RV a couple hundred watts can be a big deal. With very low standby losses, I don't have to worry about excessive power consumption. When propane is not available for our gas water heater, in conjunction with our low flow shower head there is enough hot water available to shower, albeit we won't be taking "hotel showers." Also very happy with the recovery rate of this water heater. Granted, it is quite small, but it does exactly what we need it to do.
Thanks for sharing that. I live in a block of units that has 2 one bedroom and 4 two bedroom units serviced by one stellar 330 unit witch is designed for five people. Given my understanding that state and local housing laws of a maximum of two people per bedroom that would equate to 20 possible people using the hot water. Even with the current occupants at 9 I get about 20 seconds of hot water every time I go for a hot shower before it goes cold again. I've been sending multiple repair requests to consecutive property mangers for over 2 years, At 40 degrees at kitchen sink I have had to boil the kettle to wash the dish's, not helped by eternally mounted uninsulated pipes, rumbling and popping yes, white powdery residue (I assume calcium) around the where flute connects to the tank yes, more white residue coming from where the hot relief valve fixture attaches to the tank. In the infinite wisdom of the real estate agency principle, a paver was put on top of the unit to stop it blowing up , which was at least was progress on the initial claim that Origin owned the physical hot water tank. The joys of subletting through a community housing organisation to a real estate agency with a set and forget attitude. Well at least I know now what my sister went trough when she had to live in a tepee outside my mums rural property or what brother did on military manoeuvres.
This happens about every one to two years before we have to replace either the annode or the tank altogether. We have a salt tank for our water treatment and that's the only thing I can think of that is causing all of our problems. Maybe we should look into getting a tankless water heater.
I heard this noise after I moved in my newly purchased house with a 5 or 6 years old water heater. The noise occurred for only about a minute whenever some one used hot water. But one month later the noise stopped. Not sure whether the underlying problem is till there...
One thing I noticed is that its always Rheem that needs a service, needs replacing - is there a way to have a hot water tank without anode? Or are there any tank less HWS that are as economical as a HWS with a tank?
This isn't necessarily the case. I installed a brand new water heater and immediately upon use it made the rumbling noises. After 10 minutes it goes away.
@@PlumbdogPlumbingPerth ya i bought house in 1994 its original to house 1977 and they had a hard plastic hose hooked to drain and its been clogged since at least 1993.im scared to do anything with it probaly explode in my face it seems content as is.I dont want to make it mad
Um, mines been doing this for over a year mainly when the shower is on only. When the washer or faucet, etc Is in use it still makes the noise but very minimal compared to the shower is that normal, especially since the noise has been going on for over a year?! Edit: I just now noticed when I use hot water only it does this. I just used the faucet on cold water, put my ear to the wall, heard nothing. I switched it to hot, then I hear knocking. Right now I'm using the washer and I barley hear any noise. But if it's the shower it's loud knocking, almost like this. Never been flushed or anything and I've been here since 2017
Some last forever and some last until one day after warranty expires haha. Unfortunately they dont make them like they used to, i think manufacturers realised they could sell more if they lasted less time!

Outstanding video. This helps me understand the issue with my hot water heater. Thank you.
Thanks heaps my plumber didn't have a bloody clue ! Unbelievable! 😊
Your welcome 😁
Thanks for posting the example I’m almost positive this is what is happening on ours now! Many thanks!
Fantastic explanation 👏🏻
Your welcome 😁
What happens if you do not get the problem repaired?

Omg, this sound wakes me up at random times. And we have only had the water heater less than a year!
Hi Richard. May I ask how much for replacing all the equipments in your video? Thank you
Thanks for explaining so well.
Mine is bran new and doing this. They've come in a flushed it and changed some pipe that looked like it was melted. Still doing it though.
Helpful, great video. Unnecessary music at the end is way too loud
Wow my friend good video.
I would just change the complete water heater instead of dealing with all that labor replacing parts.
Would you here the same noise from the walls upstairs ? When running hot water I here similar noise upstairs
Its possible i guess. Perhaps you should have us check it out for you? 1300884146

Hi, yes there are lots of options out there. If your in Perth, contact us via our website 😁
Thank you sir
How rare are water heater explosions
This isn't necessarily the case. I installed a brand new water heater and immediately upon use it made the rumbling noises. After 10 minutes it goes away.
my watertank from 1977 is now starting to kettle
Wow that is crazy. Likely one of the oldest around! 😳

The burner just cost as a new water heater . Why don't replace a new one.
I don’t hear a popping noise but it sounds like rushing water inside it...should I get it looked at?
You should, either split tank or burst water pipe. Are you in Perth?

Hey Richard mate how much for a full service mate?
Depends on what you have and what you need. Pls send me an email. Southperth@plumbdog.com.au
Would this cause the water heater to explode?
Its possible if the pressure relief valve has failed yes.
Show the work, don’t just talk!!!
My brand new tank does this. Piece of crap tank
How old is it? Have you contacted Rheem service? Could be to do with the water quality in your area, have you considered hard water anodes?
