  • In this writing vlog I tried Neil Gaiman's famous writing routine! After seeing others attempt this and learning more about it, I couldn't resist giving this one a try 🙂
And as the start of the Murakami challenge loomed ahead and caused me some stress around writing, I thought writing like Neil Gaiman might be just what I need to reconnect with my love of writing...
This writing vlog includes discussion of Neil Gaiman's famous writing routine and how I'm going to do it, actually doing it, and taking inspiration from Neil Gaiman's experimental nature to write outside of my usual fantasy wheelhouse!
    It was surprisingly refreshing!!
What did you think of this writing vlog? Do you like Neil Gaiman's famous writing routine? Do you want to try it yourself? Let me know in the comments below and I'll get back to you 🙂

"He has the ability to seamlessly blend mythology, folk lore, and history into his story to create something that feels both familiar and completely new."
Such an excellent way of putting it. I remember reading "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" by Gaiman, and I would honestly sum up my experience with that book using that line. The story was entrenched in this strange mythological and folk lore-y world that felt like something I had read before, but I hadn't even heard of the book prior to reading it for a college winter break event. Neil Gaiman is certainly an amazing author. I'm curious, as I progress through your video, what his writing routine will look like. I need to pay more attention to Gaiman.

Talk about synchronicity. I literally started recording this exact same thing for my channel this morning 😂

This was originally intended to be a sort of backstory, showing my state just before the Murakami challenge. That didn't exactly go as planned and I've debated whether I should release it or not (because of how tired I am in it). But I've decided to see what you all think. Hope you enjoy it!!
P.S. I would potentially like to try out this routine for longer in the future, maybe a week, maybe more 😉

Hey nice video. Been watching for a bit and you kinda make me want to catalogue my own journey aswell haha. A couple questions. 1. What is your writing routine, like what you do day by day consistently. 2. Have you permanently added anything from these imma try X's writing routine videos to your own personal writing routine? Keep up the good work

For #1, I may make a video about that, so if people want to see that, I can definitely make it :)
As far as #2, I'm kind of thinking of writing an entire book with pen because of this video and the Atwood one. Leigh Bardugo's vid made me start creating premises from the start. I still use the worldbuilding method of NK Jemisin to lay the foundation.
But mostly, I do them to experiment with different ways of doing things and to spice things up for fun of it!

@@john_writing_ cool. Yeah you should make a video on your daily writing habits. And you could call it something like "These daily writing habits helped me write a (word count) book in a month!" Yeah they do look fun. Think I'll try that Ken dude one with the intense outlining one. I tried pantsing and it sucked. Lol

@@taewoods2034 haha I feel you on pansting, I tried it for my first book and even after 90k words I barely had a story with any direction😂 I think once you internalize story structure it's easier, but I like outlining more for now!

I'm relatively new to your channel but I'm wondering if you also balance a day job or school with your writing? Do you support yourself financially or do you live with family/roommates? I've been curious since you've mentioned your daily schedule in previous videos and it only seems to involve writing, going on walks, to the pool, etc

I've been receiving a lot of questions like these recently, so rather than type out a novella in response, I think I may make a video answering some of these questions and potentially a video about my personal writing routine as well. Hopefully those two videos will answer your questions :)

Second comment to feed the algorithm: I’ve watched so many people to Neil’s writing routine (like you I’ve never read one of his books either lol) and I love the “write or do nothing” mentality. I’m definitely going to incorporate that into my own routine.

haha, it was the first thing that popped into my head looking at how long the lists were 😂

      Hello again :)
The write or do nothing tip is great! I think it's easier to implement when specifically trying to avoid technology, because it can be so easy to do something else on the computer. With pen and paper, it feels natural to do nothing when you aren't writing!

If you want some good mind theater to listen to, Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman is fantastic for that.

The problem with Neil Gaiman's work is that it's hard to know where to start!! I guess I need another TBR for The Graveyard Book haha

@@john_writing_ So true. I started with American Gods also. Might as well add Good Omen on there for good measure. ;). Btw, he’s my favorite author. Love your videos!

Haha, I want to read Good Omens as well!! I've never read anything by Terry Pratchett yet, but that and Mort are on my list too! Thanks for watching :)
