Rodney Basil Price, born on June 12, 1972, and known worldwide as Bounty Killer, is a legendary Jamaican reggae and dancehall deejay. Dubbed by AllMusic as "one of the most aggressive dancehall stars of the '90s," Bounty Killer's raw, unapologetic style and fierce "gun talk" lyrics made him a formidable force in the music scene. Regarded as one of the greatest dancehall lyricists, his journey began in Kingston, where he moved with his mother and siblings. His father, the operator of the Black Scorpio sound system, introduced him to the musical world, and by his early teens, Price was already a sound system deejay.
At just 14, Price's life took a dramatic turn when he was shot by a stray bullet during a political gunfight. During his hospital recovery, he adopted the name Bounty Killer, a moniker that would soon become synonymous with dancehall prowess. Post-recovery, he intensified his performances and transitioned to recording, quickly making a name for himself.
Bounty Killer's career is as storied as it is controversial. Arrested twice at Reggae Sumfest, once in 2001 for an altercation and again in 2008 for using profanity on stage, he continued to push boundaries. In February 2009, he made headlines again, allegedly running seven traffic lights and refusing a breathalyzer test.
His legal troubles didn’t end there. In June 2006, he faced serious charges for allegedly assaulting his child's mother, an incident reported by the Jamaica Star with harrowing details of the complainant being punched, dragged, and having her head slammed into a wall.
Despite these turbulent episodes, Bounty Killer's influence and contributions to dancehall remain unparalleled. His aggressive style and unyielding attitude have left an indelible mark on the genre, securing his legacy as a true icon of dancehall music.
