  • Join Tony Bathwaite at the St Norbert Arts Centre as we learn to make kites.
    Kite making and flying kites is something that families do in Barbados. Children learn to recycle and use available items for the kite spine, coloured tissue or paint to personalize their kite and techniques to create sound when it flies. In Barbados, families fly kits during Easter and people enter kite fly competitions for grand prizes, cars, etc.
    Supply List:
    4 x piece of light weight wood, such as balsa or basswood - 3/16” x 3/8” x 16-18” (Michael’s)
    1 x piece of bamboo ½”x 8” (this is optional to add a “bull” to make sound) we will trim down a little
    Paper to cover base of kite, such as- brown paper bags, Kraft paper, packing paper, newspaper
    For the design of your kite - Tissue paper - different colours
    To joint the wood at a centre point - 1 straight (sewing) pin with a head 1 ½ - 2” or a head pin for jewelry making
    Kite string
    Scissors
    Dental floss or cotton thread to help brace the kite frame
    Exacto Knife
    Pliers
    Ruler
    White glue
    Pencil
