I can't help shedding tears every time I hear Carmina Burana. I am honored to have been a part of a choir that performed this in 2016, when I was 31. It was such a powerful piece that always hit me emotionally. My grandfather attended and explained after that he had never been to a performance like that before. I knew in that moment how proud I made him. He passed on my birthday in 2021. I am so happy he was able to make the 3.5 hour drive to see me. Our family wasn't know for many accomplishments, if you catch my drift. I will never forget how much it meant to both of us.

Which is sad because O Fortuna pales in comparison to every other piece in this work. It's been played to death in movies. I have to confess, every time I listen to the Songs of Buren, I skip O Fortuna at the beginning and the end.

Someone wrote those poems between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries (in Latin and Old German), and today we can listen to them, being played and sung thanks to Carl Orff. If this is not Art, I don't know what it is.

In 1968, I was the first chair flutist at the Macomb County Community College Band in Warren, Michigan USA. Our band was not the traditional college band. We challenged ourselves to bring a wide variety of music to our college and the public Two events that we performed that sticks out as a huge endeavor was to perform for President Richard Nixon at the Universal Mall in Warren, Michigan and a onetime only performance sans choir of Carmina Burana. With the President, it was one of his reelection campaign stops. Our band being available was asked to perform during the lulls that can occur during a large and long presidential campaign. The director and our group put our heads together, we were not going to play any John Phillip Sousa songs or any patriotic music that is probably heard everywhere. We thought we were the only group providing the music. Nixon enters with the Redford high school marching band john Phillip Sousing it up. Thy arched in and then, I think, marched out. What an entrance. With our group of 25 musicians, we [played in the back corner farthest away from anyone and we played our carefully chosen songs. Suddenly without notice, President Nixon had got off his podium, walked through the crown and appeared at my side, looking at our band director. We froze in terror; did we do something wrong? Nixon looked at us and said, “You are not playing for the President of the United States! You are playing for me. Mr. Nixon was a classic pianist and we had chosen to perform his favorite composers for his entertainment. My jaw dropped, he said that what we did for him, he will never forget. It was one of the most precious and thoughtful music that endeared him to our band. And then he looked at us and smiled! He used to have the nickname Tricky Dick and here he was Tricky Dick. smiling at us from ear to ear.
Our next musical event was a public performance of Carmina Burana. We had no college choir to sing the German lyrics, so we worked many hours to bring this s hour plus performance. I had a flute solo that lasted about 20 measures and it was the hardest piece of music I ever played since I never really had flute lessons but learned by ear even when I played in high school. Watching and hearing this version brought me to tears. I am 73 years old, and I can remember to this day when we finished the last note and stood up, the audience was dead silent. After an hour and about 10 minutes of playing our hearts out, our audience had no idea how to react to this marvelous piece. They never clapped, dead silence as we walked off stage. I loved every measure of Carmina no matter how crazy the music was written in the strangest tempo I have ever seen and the time I had to take to practice, practice, and practice to do our best. Years later, I will perform at Gettysburg and in front of the White House of President Jimmy Carter (he is in hospice and in my prayers) as I continued my musical experiences in a Michigan Civil war band around our great state of Michigan and just for fun.
Carmina Burana was to me my greatest honor as a musician to perform and I totally understand the depth of love that for the choir members and instrumentalists who have also experienced performing this piece. As soon as the first notes were played, I was in tears of the happy memories being a musician, my love to all of you especially my fellow musicians who experienced this one-of-a-kind event in the Love for Music. My father dragged my brother, sister and I kicking and screaming to Carnegie Hall and to this day I'm glad he did. When I watch a Symphony or any Orchestra perform it seems other worldly. How did the human experience evolved this ability?
How is it that a person's mind can contain a song/musical picture then invent a way to represent it into a musical language so that others can perform it? How one person can understand the nature of a large variety of instruments, this also includes the human voice, and combined them all into such amazing expressions. In my opinion this is true magic!

Music was the third of my five languages, and I think the most important one for learning other languages, as one must be precise with pitch, rhythm, intonation, dynamics, and more, along with finding the emotional content of the work. It matters little if one is performing Orff, Bach, Rutter, Gjeilo, Pink Floyd, Beatles, or Fever Tree. The precision of all aspects of the musical language is essential to ANY work performed, and the composer is but the initiator of those aspects. For many, many years I was less than enthralled with chamber music, especially string quartets (SQ) and similar sized ensembles. Someone, I don't remember whom, suggested that an SQ wasn't just 4 people bowing and plucking their own instrument, but actually was a conversation between the 4 players, each adding commentary to the conversation in turn. I began intentionally listening to small ensembles in that manner, and gained an even deeper understanding and appreciation of that music and eventually music in general.I've been making music for 60 years, and I consider music to be my second most important language. Yes, it IS magic, as a small child learning to speak is magic, but the magic is honed by intense work, deep listening, and guided by emotion. Come to think of it, that's exactly like a small child learning to speak! The magic is there, the work is evident, and the emotion pervades one's being. It NEVER ends, as there's always more language to understand!My best to you,Brew

+brwmeistr9 Brew maybe you can help me respond to Franisco Alanis' reply. I can pick out a few words but I'm seriously missing the jest and I would not wish to be rude. Plus I have never had anyone respond in Italian before and I'm dying of curiosity. I'm not proud for not learning another language. I took French in Junior High, I know how to introduce myself along with the person standing beside me and ask directions to the library.' I did learn how to answer a phone in Japanese, say Thank you' and introduce myself. Come to think about it communication is everything whether it be scent trails, sonar/ echo location or bird songs. I love to watch Jane Goodall's male chimpanzees drumming specific trees with their hind feet. It makes you wonder 'when did we start drumming things for the pleasure of it'? My high school is currently working on this piece and will perform it soon for our winter concert. When we practice it just us (the band) it sound good, but the first time we played and the chorus sang... OH MY GOD! The first O' Fortuna they sing just over powers the band and it's just one of those moments. I could write a story that's how descriptive I could get but for the sake of reading this I'll stop here.

My father is a singer at the local philharmonics, and he usually took me ad my sister to their concerts. Since childhood, I loved Carmina Burana, but didn't realise back then how great of a masterpiece this is. He said that these pieces of art are music at its finest. He also told us, that in order to enjoy these pieces, one must be mature enough to understand it, and for me, this was the day. Carl Orff is a genius.

I was once a tenor in a choir for a performance of Carmina Burana with the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra in 1997
I love posts like yours Christopher. Almost 60 years ago, as a young kid, I too sang Carmina Burana as a bass with a very very competent choir under the direction of Anthony Taglino.
Because Mr. Taglino was a well-respected graduate of The New England Conservatory of Music and because we were from a very upscale community in Roslyn, N.Y., not to mention that Mr. Taglino was super well connected, our tenor soloists were Jan Pierce and Robert Merrill from The N.Y. Metropolitan Opera. Our soprano soloist was Susan Belink (that is her real name. Her dad was a Cantor in one of our local Jewish Temples) Her stage name as a soprano diva in Europe was something I can't even remember.
This experience was my first introduction to singing and classical music and it led to a richer appreciation of music from that time forward

I'm glad you like the music and I appreciate your comment, except for the final point where you say that this music is more epic and emotional than the whole life of some people.
I think the music serves to illustrate the great and epic drama, the ever-changing fortunes, and emotional depths both high and low, that captures the essence of life itself.
This is to say that life, all life, exists in the tense struggle to move with the whirling wheel, endlessly oscillating between triumph and tragedy, life and death.

The male timpanist is way too cool. Nothing phases this guy. He just does it and does it in style. Like "I'm young and just styling all over this concert and I'm not even breaking a sweat over here."
I played a CD of Carmina Burana near a swimming pool in Paphos, Cyprus in 1996 and a large contingent of locals and tourists came to enjoy it. I made many friends that night.

I happen to live in Oberbayern (Upper Bavaria, Germany) and was lucky enough to be part of a choir that performed this piece in ... Benediktbeuern, of all places, where the actual medieval texts were found that became the lyrics of this piece.
We performed at the former Benediktbeuern Monastery in the Meierhof (courtyard) yesterday, 24-Jul-2022. Though we did the version with two grand pianos, percussion, soloists and choir (not a full orchestra, set by one of his "disciples" and authorized by Carl Orff) it was a very exciting event - and I believe the audience liked it very much as well.
It was with the cultural association "Klangkunst im Pfaffenwinkel" at Iffeldorf. Iffeldorf is just a couple towns over from Benediktbeuern.
Always a stunning experience, this piece - and maybe the location made the event even more special.
Whatever the music you like - keep singing on and on - until the cows come home!

My grandmother was in a group that sang this and I had to come to all the rehearsals (I was 10 or 11 and she didn't have a babysitter). By the time they performed I could sing it. I had no idea what I was saying, I just mimicked the sounds. I always liked Ego sum abbas because I thought he was singing about Eggo waffles.

I've been in Love with Carmina Burana since I first watch the 1981 movie " Excalibur " . First watched it in 1985 and still all these years later I still listen to it with the same passion etc as when I first heard it.

My friends and I were in chorus in college and we did this piece. Many, many years ago now. Our choral conductor sadly passed away just last year. He was only 60. We all still remembered him fondly, even after all the years. They did the O Fortuna portion during his memorial service.

"Only 60" is a very modern thing to say. Perspective always helps in our viewing and experience of death in others. 60 years is an enormity when we consider the length of most animal's lives. Your instructor effected lives for 60 years straight. What a phenomenal life to live given humanity's history. Have a good one.

There is nothing -- and I mean NOTHING! More moving and satisfying than being fortunate enough to sing with a choir like this! My first experience with singing in a choir like this, was in the high school chorale. I took the course because I liked to sing and thought it would be an easy grade. The first piece I learned was Mozart's 'Ave Verum'. I never knew such sublime music existed! My first experience in a choir accompanied by an orchestra, was with the West Florida Music Festival Chorus. We performed Brahm's Requiem, under the direction of then New Orleans' Symphony conductor Phillipe Entremont. The music, like this, envelopes you and I often struggled to control tears. I'm afraid the current generation is missing out.

My daughters have just "discovered" Carmina Burana since it's part of an anime they're following. I made them listen to the whole piece and they fall in love with it all. Teenagers appreciate good music in the appropriate time.

My father who died in 2003was in the northwest Indiana symphony chorus and I watched him perform this. Will never forget it. I love it.

This my favorite perfomance of Carmina Burana. That rich and powerful chorus works hand in glove with an orchestral accompaniment that is strong but clear. I have to say that I really enjoyed the solo male singer whose voice was exuberantly deep and expressive. I do not know who enjoyed this more, me or him.
Tbh, they should be drunk for this drinking music. It sounds so epic, but it’s just Bavarian music for drinking alcohol. ;)

The same can be said about most musical performances of any genre. Just like the experience of attending, say, a rugby or soccer game beats watching it on tv. It is the sense of being in a crowd. Thats how politicians can rouse a mob at a rally.
It is the highlight of my life - I sang Alto to this piece. It doesn't get better than that.

After visting the site the local monks serve a fine beer.

haris7911 Orff wrote an 'out of range' note for a baritone. I think he knew sometimes things like this will happen, and that's part of the show, and that's all. Take a look on the score, and read again the text and the composer's notes. ;)

Agreed! I have Carmina on CD by another orchestra but sometimes I stream this one just to listen/watch his performance. I'll potter around doing my thing and just listening like it was the radio... until his parts come on and then I'll pop back to my screen to watch. 😁

I first heard a recording of Carmina Burana in 1965 while in grad school. It is now 2020 and I love this piece of music as much today as in 1965.

It's actually an oratorio rather than a symphony but yes, it is spectacular. A symphony usually does not have singing. An oratorio also differs from an opera in that there is no story that's acted out on stage, such as you would see in Carmen or Tosca, it is only sung and not acted, even though the singing is operatic.

Had no idea what a Christmas concert was going to be while a student at Michigan State in 1965, walked into the balcony, took a seat AND WAS FILLED WITH JOYOUS TEARS THROUGHOUT! Incredible music!!

I heard Carmina Burana for the first time in my native country Chile, performed by our philarmonic orchestra, I was then 12 year old and it was a rapture experience, now at 72 is still a joy to hear it, moreover with this fantastic orquestra, choir and baritone, tenor and superb soprano

I'm so glad no one started clapping at 4:09. For a second I was worried, but we're obviously dealing with an experienced audience, and not the amateurs we see in 9 out of 10 videos that clap at the most inappropriate times.

Unfortunately these wrong pauses break Carmina Burana into single music pieces songs although Orff composed music as 'one piece'.
Like at graduations and they say hold your claps until the end but as soon as they say one name everyone fucking screams and claps
@@Sightstoned - there's a point where one has to simply accept reality as it is, instead of having the conceit to think that you can bend the world to your will. The smart thing for the people running graduations to do, would be to quit issuing instructions that they know nobody is going to follow.
Vis-a-vis classical music, they should hold performances that are explicitly called out as "no seats, standing only, jumping, yelling, screaming, devil horn signs, etc. required." Let the would be audience members pick which performance they'd rather see: the "sit in a zombie like trance until your brain drains out of your nose" style, or the "let's from a mosh pit to Orff" style.
Concert etiquette.
This music takes a lot of work, time and dedication and it is not easy to direct, play, or sing. I dare say to the critics to look carefully at themselves and realize the beauty of this performance.
