I’ve been to Canada a few times. Also the US, Australia, New Zealand and many other places in my life, but I mention these as they all have a common cultural history stretching back 200 years or so. What I can tell you is that I found the Canadian people to be very much like the Brits and Irish in character and values and the way we communicate. Sure there are differences but nothing any more different than say Londoners and Glaswegians within the UK. In the west of Canada, the culture is heavily influenced by the US, and that’s understandable. But there is also a distinct Canadian / Ontarian culture that is bright, refreshing and positive. I know it’s not your taste but a great country/ folky singer I believe from Saskatchewan called Colter Wall , I really like his music. Canada is awesome. Visited Canada many years ago, absolutely loved it!!! Did a road trip from Calgary to Banff, through Revelstoke and Kamloops to Vancouver, eventually ending up whale watching in Victoria. Once we discovered it, we always ate at The Old Spaghetti Factory, is it still a thing? Everyone we met were very warm and welcoming and I'd go back to Canada most definitely. Bought my first Tilley hat out there and it still serves me well after twenty years!
Back in the day I travelled overland from Toronto to Vancouver and found Canadians to be friendly and talkative to strangers, especially on trains. It was summer and the weather was very warm apart from Thunder Bay. The friendliness of Canadian people is my lasting impression of Canada.
I'm a Brit and love Canada and Canadians more than any other! Plus you guys gave us Rush...not boring at all. Can't wait to head back. Love your channel
When I think of Canadian Musicians I think of Neil Young(my favourite ever musician) Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell & Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Might just be my age though.
Hi Alanna, I have been to Ontario, you know, the touristy bits like Toronto, Niagara, Ottawa and some of the less known ones like Bracebridge, Pentquishine and Algonquin provincial park, had a really great time.
This years winter weather is crazy! -35 but I love when it’s spring wish spring was longer here I live two hours away from Toronto, glad I came across your channel! Get well soon!
I've been to Canada... Booked a flight only, hired a car at the airport then went looking for a hotel in Toronto. Had a great time visited Niagara then drove up to Kingston and had 10 days there, hotel overlooked the lake facing a steam engine. The people and the food where fantastic. Breakfast at Timothy Hortons every day. Hope to go back one day.
Firstly, I apologise on behalf of those Brits that were rude to Canadians about being boring. I don't know if they were trying to wind you up. If they were, I'm glad to see it didn't work. I've been to Canada twice, firstly before you were even born also on the road trip from Calgary to Vancouver via Banff and Kamloops. The 2nd time was to Toronto to see a Chinese group, the 12 Girls Band, in concert in 2007. (My only chance to see them, living in the UK!!). The Canadians are friendly, helpful, funny and cool. I hope you get the chance to visit Devon and Cornwall soon, stunning scenery down here. Get well asap!!
When I think of Canada, I think of sitting by the Grand River on a hot day drinking root beer. I think of when my cousins and I used to go to Dairy Queen and order blueberry milkshakes. Sitting in the mall and going to Tim Hortons and watching the local ice hockey team. Niagara Falls was breathtaking too. The first time I ever saw Amish people was at Niagara. The memories I have of Canada are all positive, it's a great country.
Forget about Shatner, Canada has produced some of the world's best bands, The Guess Who, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Triumph, Saga, April Wine, Loverboy, Anvil, Rush, Chilliwack, Heart, Glass Tiger, Trooper, Nickelback, Steppenwolf and Crash Test Dummies to name just a few of them. Canadian's are like British people with a different accent, some of them are like French people too. I love Canada and Canadian's
As a Brit living in Canada for over 40yrs I had an email conversation about music with my mates. When I spoke of Canadian music one said "Oh you mean Rush & Brian Adams" I schooled them with Colin James, The Tragically Hip, The Grapes of Wrath, The Payolas, Tom Cochrane, Lover Boy, April Wine, Chilliwack and many more. They were astounded that they never got to hear such great music. Also they never realized that Men Without Hats (Safety Dance) and Martha and the Muffins (Echo Beach) and more were Canadian songs. It's criminal that these bands don't get the exposure they deserve. And BTW they loved them all.
I’ve always loved Canada. Visited it. Have relatives there. About half the channels I subscribe to are made by Canadians. I wanted to emigrate to Canada when I left the RAF but life got in the way.
Every single Canadian is a poutine-chomping, Carling-swigging ice hockey fan who listens constantly to Bachman Turner Overdive's 'You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet'. I thought everybody knew that. :)
Many years ago, during the school holidays, I went to Canada, My Mum insisted I took winter clothes with me as "it's always cold" Hmm, soon found out it was a hot place during the summer, ended up buying shorts and t shirts.
You forgot Barenaked Ladies and Bachmann-Turner Overdrive... let's rock!!! Been to BC in summer and Alberta for skiing. We loved the predictable seasons
The Guess Who. One of the best rock bands ever. This American has benefited from Canadian artists his whole life. I'm 54, and all my older siblings were into Neil Young when I was young. His music was everywhere. It still is, at my house. A few years ago, my kids wanted to see Niagara Falls. We drove from south Kansas to London, Ontario and on to Toronto, then finally the Falls. We loved the trip. I have to say, though, Toronto's traffic is insane! You look a bit pale. You're strength and fortitude got you through another interesting video, even with the flu. Thanks!
In 87 went to Canada in May/June time and it was roasting around Hamilton and Toronto. We watched the British FA Cup in the enlisted men's club in Hamilton. When Coventry beat Spurs. A fantastic day out. Did the thousand Island boat trip a few days later from Toronto. Fantastic weather and also a great day out!
I do a weekly radio show about Bluegrass and roots music, which is mostly oriented towards Nashville and Kentucky - the bluegrass heartland. It is AMAZING how many Canadian artists are making a GOOD living in that genre, and knocking the Americans out of the park. Either as artists/band leaders in their own right or as members of significant acoustic bands.
In Jasper for breakfast I had sourdough pancakes with maple syrup. You could have fed an army for a week off that plate. I remember feeling guilty at leaving most of it with a lot of people in the world starving. I then went trekking off trail in shin deep snow cheered by the fact that there were about six critters that could kill or eat you. I was told bears don't like being surprised and was given a bear bell which I didn't use as it would have been like saying "here is dinner" A great time was had there and in Edmonton. Of all the countries visited I found Canadians to be the politest and most civilised
I've not met a Canadian in real life yet. But I think you are wonderful! Not boring! I find English people get triggered so easy when it comes to anything British / English. Also, where did you get your jumper?! It's cute as heck.
Kimberly Roberts ironically - a ‘jumper’ here in BC is .... well. It’s when someone is attempting suicide on a bridge ... usually in the middle of the day and the bridge is then closed to all traffic and causes worse congestion than usual. Eg: ‘god, the Lions Gate is closed again - did you hear why?!’ ‘Ya, someone said it’s a jumper’. 😕
Having visited Canada in 2016 with my family and again in 2018 with just my wife, I can say I absolutely loved it, we were based in Golden BC for the first trip and Vancouver Island and Golden on the second trip. The people were so friendly and nothing was to much trouble for them, and as for food, you might not have a national cuisine but the food we ate was gorgeous, never had a bad meal. My wife and I agreed if we had done these trips 30 to 40 years ago we would have emigrated, but as I approach my 70th birthday that's not going to happen, although my son and his wife are seriously looking at going. I have promised myself one treat for my 70th and that's we are going back to Golden and taking the children with us, in fact, the cabins are already booked and I can't wait. Keep up these great videos I look forward to my weekly treat
Come to Edmonton, you'll want to move. The first hot day after a cold, long winter sitting with a drink on the Hotel MacDonald patio looking out over the river valley is one of the few times anywhere you'd have the perspective to appreciate being alive. You could very literally die doing exactly the same thing only a few months earlier. Cold gives you appreciation of precious warmth. -38C with a strong northeast wind will make you humble.
I'm a fan of quite a few Canadian singers/bands including Allison Crowe, Tara MacLean, Frazey Ford, Sarah McLachlan, Great Lake Swimmers, Wild Strawberries and The Be Good Tanyas, to name but a few. It was the soundtrack to Due South that was my first introduction Canadian music, and what a showcase it was.
My daughter spent two weeks there and loved it. Especially the big trucks you can rent and drive around. Plus she got to see a wild bear rummaging through a picnic park. She stayed in the truck lol
I go to Edmonton every winter because I like -30'C (also my brother lives there) and then to places like Banff for snowboarding. My experience of Canadians is that most are super friendly and polite. My other observation is that where ever there is a ski hill Canadians have been replaced exclusively by Australians. If I was Canadian I'd keep an eye on this as they seem to be trying to replace you. As a side note my best mate from Canada does yammer on about poutine a lot so he is now named Captain Poutine but he is from Montreal.
Defo want to go to Canada one day. I confess I did picture it more snowy than hot, but geography's never been my strong point. Thanks for clearing that up! I know a lot of Canadians who have a great sense of humour! Not boring at all! I'd never heard of poutine tbh. Looks tasty! Maple syrup is so good! Hope you had a speedy recovery!
@@lwaves "I came to Chicago to track down the killers of my father, and, for reasons that do not need to be explained at this juncture remain attached to the Canadian Consulate as liaison officer." - I never watched a single episode I watched all of them (Mounty on the Bounty I think are the best two).
That was from memory the correct one is "My name is Constable Benton Fraser, Royal Canadian Mounted Police. I first came to Chicago on the trail of the killers of my father and, for reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, I have remained, attached as liaison officer with the Canadian Consulate."
Hi! I love your videos. I stumbled upon them when we were going to travel through England for six months and have been watching ever since. Although originally from Ontario, we have spent many years in Alberta. In Ontario, Poutine is made with curd where it is routinely found, but in Alberta Poutine is often referred to as Mottza Fries and always made with mozzarella cheese, gravy and chips (fries). Cheers!
Hey! 'been to Canada' - that means me! A few years ago me and my other half went to Vancouver and Vancouver Island on a business trip/holiday. It was pretty damn good all round. First impression on leaving the airport (Seattle) and crossing the border for the long drive north was: those fields are *huge!* holy cow, just miles and miles of crops... Vancouver is a nice mix of styles, and kind of cool all round. Very big meals, every time. We could have lived on a single shared breakfast for the whole day. Really, really wide roads - pressing the crossing button, and thinking "I have got to get across 6 lanes now" (We were walking to the park) Black squirrels! Hot weather - it was 26C in Vancouver but 32C in Toronto! insane... Um what else? Oh, aquariums and zoos - awesome - especially seeing wolves and sea otters! Vancouver Island - Just great - I rate it as one of the best islands in the world, and finally, giant trees! The temperate rain forest areas grow massive trees. Also, friendly people - stereotype, but more true than not...
You should see the crops in Alberta and Saskatchewan literally go for miles and miles. And a northern forest that stretches for Thousands of uninterrupted miles.
The hottest part of Canada is in the prairies - especially Saskatchewan, where it once got up to an insane 45C! The hottest the UK has got to is about 39C.
I think both are really stunning places to visit. I'd love to travel to Canada this year... Here in Mexico people from Europe say that Mexicans are way nicer than Americans. Of course when they come here in touristic places, it's hard to see the dark side. I think one should live at least one year abroad to understand a country's actual situation and its people.
I'll put my vote in for The Be Good Tanyas among loads of great Canadian bands. I've experienced both -29 and +39 temperatures in Montreal - of the two, the heat was worse. Montreal has more restaurants/person than any other city in the world (I believe). So if you get bored of Kraft Dinner or poutine, there's loads of cuisine to choose from there (even if none of it is likely to be Canadian in origin!) Each week I think, will the mini Christmas tree still be up. Can it make it into February?
I'm from Canada (yay you have canadian viewers!). I studied in Aberdeen UK in 2018 and I have to say I am loving your videos! The diet of maple syrup and poutine was something I got a lot! About the music thing- a canadian example I got a lot was Avril Lavigne !
Hi Alanna, thanks for your excellent video. My first thought of Canada is all the spectacular scenery there, with the forests and mountains. My favourite city there would be Toronto. Okay, I like trams and that certainly helps my choice there!!! I have never been to Canada so far, but it certainly sounds like a country worth seeing. Anyway, take care. Robert.
Visited Vancouver with my family when I was a teenager. It's a beautiful city. I'm from Los Angeles and I remember I was stunned when I saw how clean the city was. We were there in the middle of summer and froze our butts off by the way.
I've always loved Canada my perceptions of it as a country were all formed from watching Due South great series the concept all Canadians very much quirky like Constable Benton Frazier and all have wolves
I’m Canadian from the maritimes and I find your channel very interesting. I don’t know how I stumbled upon it but I love watching your videos. I don’t really enjoy poutine either.
Best sushi i ever ate was in downtown Toronto. Super cosmopolitan city and yeah very friendly, I found. I think people gotta see some Canadian Ice Hockey to know not all Canadians are polite 😅
Kingston, Ontario. Drivers stopping as you approach the kerb so you can cross. Felt hotter there than I did in Australia because Canada gets much more humid around the lakes. Plus you have the best part of Niagara Falls, bears...and Neil Young. Visit Canada folks!
chilliwack, David Wilcox, Van Bran 3000, Saga, Shania Twain, The Stampeders, and on and on and on, these are few of the many Canadian artists that are well known outside Canada
Hey, talking about great Canadians musically, you forgot Joni Mitchell, the greatest female singer-songwriter ever. OK, she might not have set foot in Canada in the last 150 years, but she’s still Canadian - right?
whenever I think of Canada I automatically think of big citie's and the world's most beautiful forests, woods and mountains. also, I think of the great comedians and a lot of great actor's and I also think of all the great food you have. I do think about of the very cold snowy winters and the deadly wildlife you have and like most other people the maple syrup that Canada produces and personally I don't have anything bad to say about Canada.
I knew a Canadian for a short time who was amazed at our attitude to the Royals. He thought we'd be as pro Royal as they are. I said the Windsor castle fire repair bill had a large changing in attitudes . He also expected us to be wearing business suits & bowler hats. Mind you I reckon if the Canadian team wins the ice hockey gold medal that's all that matters to them. Plus they gave the world Rush. Can't thank them enough.
I heard you mention The Arkells when you talked about Canadian music. I saw them last year and loved them. Looking forward to seeing them again next month at Kendal Calling. Bieber they most definately are not...
Do you count Dan Aykroyd [Blues Brothers for those who didn't attend a cinema [movie house] before 1990]? I love the movie, the music, and I'm a classical musician in my spare time. Leonard Cohen - sign me up for his next concert on the same continent... My supervisor, and various "elders" at my UK Uni are Canadian, although many moved back to CA. Some with UK born children [that will be interesting with Brexit].
I lived in London On. as a child and all I remember is the snow and a girl named Cindy who walked me home from school. She'd be in her 60's now and I often wonder how she's doing. You sound absolutely fine by the way.
I visited Niagara in April 2012 and loved it, we had lovely sunny weather just like Spain, downpours of rain and just before we came home it was cold like I've never known........ also on Canadian music... 'Rush !! Awesome band started in the 70s and have made some incredible music, hugely talented but maybe not your taste ..
I was lucky enough to live in Canada for 2 years, it was a wonderful experience. Calgary Alberta had very hot summers and very cold winters. Get well soon X X X
As a Brit having worked several years for a Canadian company (in the UK), travelled a few times to Ontario (mainly Niagra and Toronto), have two cousins in Canada (St John, NB and London, Ontario), a daughter currently working there (downtown Toronto) and watched the TV series Degrassi, my perception of Canada is: 1) It's huge 2) everyone has a log cabin by a lake 3) the Loose Moose is the best bar in Toronto 4) Crews and Tango bars, Toronto are ideal for afternoon tea with your conservative, religious grandma (LOL) 4) You're struggling, like the UK, to keep out the USA media influence; 5) I love it and Canadians (though not sure about the Quebecois) ! Ok, slightly tongue-in-cheek..Oh, did you forget Shania Twain?
I’m British but I have family in Toronto, so I’ve been going since I was about 10. Most of these misconceptions I’ve also encountered, but the ‘always cold’ one surprises me. I especially remember as a teenager getting out of an air conditioned car and being smacked in the face by a wall of heat 😂. One thing though, what’s with putting cheese on apple pie?

I have met a few Canadians in real life, mostly tourists in Northern Ireland. Anodyne in an endearing kind of way and actually very good ambassadors.
The Barenaked Ladies - amazing band.
Canada's good for comics too, especially Joe Matt, Seth, Chester Brown, Kate Beaton and Dave Sim
Don't forget the music of William Shatner! ;)
Great vid, hope get better soon.
th-cam.com/video/lul-Y8vSr0I/w-d-xo.html
Well, I have been to Canada and I never found the people boring at all, I loved it there.
I’ve always loved Canada. Visited it. Have relatives there. About half the channels I subscribe to are made by Canadians. I wanted to emigrate to Canada when I left the RAF but life got in the way.
3:30 “I can never be left alone with my own thoughts” is a surprisingly ominous sounding phrase :-) I wonder what you thinking....
In Alberta you can have all the seasons in one afternoon.
Barenaked Ladies! So good.
Thanks!
I also like the Canadian singer/songwriter Buffy Saint Marie. Interesting person I think.
You’re not boring, you’re entertaining. That’s a FACT! LOL
I love that fact that you call Canadian culture a “mosaic”. Very nice. I wish the UK felt the same. I’d move to Canada. Way more sane than the US.
Good choice of trip! Banff is too commercial and Calgary is too 'Murica!!
I've not met a Canadian in real life yet. But I think you are wonderful! Not boring!
I find English people get triggered so easy when it comes to anything British / English.
Also, where did you get your jumper?! It's cute as heck.
Good question. Are there maple leaves on the sleeves, or am I using yet another Canadian stereotype?
Lol...jumper! I remember that term...sounds weird now. Canadians call it a sweater.
@@kimc555 omg I had no idea, does make sense though.
Sweater does make more sense, I wonder why I call it a jumper.mmm
@@hairyairey i think it's flowers , possibly roses
Stan Rogers. Nuff said.
I spent three weeks travelling across Canada last autumn. Great country, lovely people. Hated poutine. I'll be back sometime...
I Visited Vancouver a few years ago and it was lovely, couldnt say a bad word about personally.
My friend has family in Canada and they are so cool. Very nice people and love a BBQ like no other.
Vancouver is the warmest city in Canada in the winter. Not much snow, climate is close to London, UK. Mostly rain in winter.
Captain Poutine, that's hilarious!
I hope you feel better soon.
Thanks so much - hope you can visit Canada one day!
Next you'll be telling me Due South isn't a documentary!
haha nice
Thank you kindly.

Canada you’re just a better version Britain which is why you will never leave us
Hope you feel better soon, love the vids 😘
I find Canadians are generally very friendly people!
"Telling off Siri" was a priceless moment. Made me chuckle.
Get well soon!
I'll put my vote in for The Be Good Tanyas among loads of great Canadian bands.
I've experienced both -29 and +39 temperatures in Montreal - of the two, the heat was worse.
Montreal has more restaurants/person than any other city in the world (I believe). So if you get bored of Kraft Dinner or poutine, there's loads of cuisine to choose from there (even if none of it is likely to be Canadian in origin!)
Each week I think, will the mini Christmas tree still be up.
Will be checking out the canadian bands you mentioned but loved neil young for years! Harvest! Thanks for another cool video!
I've always loved Canada my perceptions of it as a country were all formed from watching Due South great series the concept all Canadians very much quirky like Constable Benton Frazier and all have wolves
...we do all wolves...named fluffy, everything else is false
*all have* (oh my gosh, voice-to-text, WTF)
Nickelback, Anne Murray, Rush, Gordon Lightfoot.
Pipes: Simon Fraser University Pipe Band and 78th Fraser Highland Pipe Band
Well you're definitely not boring. I can't wait for Tuesdays anymore so I can get my Adventures and Naps fix.
I’m Canadian from the maritimes and I find your channel very interesting. I don’t know how I stumbled upon it but I love watching your videos. I don’t really enjoy poutine either.
Parts of the UK people eat chips (fries), cheese (like chedder or whatever, not curds) and gravy and I LOVE it and want to try the Canadian version.
Yeah me too, I love chips and cheese and chips with gravy.
Did a quick Google - www.jamieoliver.com/news-and-features/features/tips-perfect-poutine/
Very cool. Love your videos!
Sorry you’re ill. Hope you get better soon x
Best sushi i ever ate was in downtown Toronto. Super cosmopolitan city and yeah very friendly, I found. I think people gotta see some Canadian Ice Hockey to know not all Canadians are polite 😅
Canadians are polite like the British, friendly like Americans. Best of both worlds.
Edit: I have been to Canada.
Love these videos, such a positive outlook on life. I’ve had a stressful day and feel better now.
Some places it's not that cold at all. It is January right now and we have flowers blooming in Vancouver and Victoria.
If I could only keep 1 record it'd be Hejira!
@@ajadrew Blue? Court & Spark? Song to a Seagull? Too MANY great LPs by Joni Mitchell
@@raymondporter2094 I know....it's Hejira for me though..;-))
she still has a home in Canada in BC and goes each year
whenever I think of Canada I automatically think of big citie's and the world's most beautiful forests, woods and mountains. also, I think of the great comedians and a lot of great actor's and I also think of all the great food you have.
Too late, Leonard Cohen passed away a few month ago, but his music is eternal
Best Canadian popular musical artist is Coeur de Pirate (Béatrice Martin) - in both French and English. She writes and sings in both languages.
She's wonderful!
A big chunk of cheddar and a slice of apple pie is a bit of heaven. But I'm more likely to put some vanilla ice cream on it.
