in answer to hefbk. This is a FACE SHOVEL- hence digging into the face. A Dragline - Drags the Bucket back towards the swing shovel unit and is sometimes used for wet ground/difficult access conditions jobs where a long reach is needed.
Surprisingly Fast and aggressively productive, a force to be reckoned with even today, working to fine levels might not be as easy as a modern day excavator but little doubt drivers back then would master their machine and be pretty accurate.
Hey its me :) by the way shes an 820 shovel with a Waukashaw WAKD diesel. Ive never heard another motor like it.
Or 80j has a cat 13000 but I like the way the waukesha sounds
