- This video is the wrap up of the restoration of my 1920's Rhodes Metal Shaper. This time around, I build a motor mount and enclosure to put a treadmill motor on the machine and make the first chips.

I don't comment on many videos, but I feel compelled to tell you that you are my favorite, most relatable TH-cam machine shop guy.
I also work with what I have, make usable things out of other people's detritus, and don't have state of the art anything.

I too recently made a thing out of stuff and had to do a lot of things to the stuff to make the thing the stuff made do stuff to another thing. But in the end, the thing this stuff made was pretty cool.

Really like that lil shaper, second one seen on TH-cam, we'd like either find one or build one from scratch 🤔 but that's way down the road, congrats on finishing yours!

Are they not the greatest tool for the shop. Amazing 1920 build performing like a new machine. I have been looking for one of these machines for a long time for like you all my material comes from scrap or the junk yard. Which is a story in it self.

Hi Jeremy, thanks for the video on setting up the shaper drive.
Not sure if you've watched any of his videos but Adam Booth of Abom79 fame has quite a few on his experimentation of getting his shapers to do useful work. They may be a very useful source of ideas. His machine would eat yours for lunch size wise though. Another site that has a machine more your size is Michael at Rustinox in Belgium. He also builds stuff out of nothing material and until recently he only owned a lathe and shaped which filled in for a mill. He has recently added a mill but still does a lot on the shaper. Both are excellent channels.

Awesome to see it making its first chips! Great job on the motor/electronic enclosure. It's a tidy package, and works well... It doesn't matter so much that it's modern, vs the old machine. I actually intend on putting a 3-phase motor with a VFD on my Rhodes... Though I wish I had a planetary gearbox like yours, so I didn't have to use a countershaft.
It's a really fun machine to use, and I'm sure you'll get plenty of enjoyment running it!
As far as tools go, shaper tools are very similar to lathe tools. Left and right handed, and a centered "universal" cutter are great to start with. I definitely recommend grinding a shear tool for finishing... You can get some amazing results in steel and cast iron, and absolutely spectacular mirror-finishes in aluminum.
There's plenty of videos on TH-cam from the likes of Abom, Rustinox, Steve Summers, and Matty's Workshop (among others), on grinding all kinds of tools for the shaper.

If you ever need a cheap, reliable and easy to use 1/2-1hp motor for a future project like this. Look into consew sewing machine servo motors. They can be had for $150 on eBay. They are three phase motors with controller and are easy to use. I have one on my lathe, and I'll be upgrading my drill press with one soon.

Beautiful Job Jeremy - No shame at all in the modern drive system. You've restored what was there, and added on using what you had, to make the thing functional and practical. A job to be proud of. Love the lumpy finish off the original tool :-) Looking back at part 1 of the series, the shaper looks like a different machine now. Lovely work.
I am envious of you having a small shaper. You will get a lot if fun out of it I am sure.
You've done a really nice job with the shaper. I thought your slotted motor mount holes looked really good. I've never had much luck with slots.

Very nice work sir! Excellent recovery with the slot. My first machining boss (early 90's) told me: 'Not so much about messing a part up, more about how well you can fix it'. The 4 inch hole saw, that's a nope. LOL I'm 5'5" and weight a mighty 115 lbs. Anyhow, great video and keep up the great work!
I'm looking forward to seeing you grind your tools. I restored an Atlas 7B shaper and have 2 videos on it. I plan to upload the 3rd video on Friday. Mine turned out great like yours. I have to learn how to grind the tools as well. Keep 'em coming.....
Gosh, I really enjoyed this restoration. I've just got and restored a hand shaper and now I've got the bug with them, for sure! Trying to find one that's of a reasonable size (i.e. 6-8") seems almost impossible in the UK at the moment...

I think I may've seen the same mill for sale local to me about 4-5 months ago. It needed some work to be working again from what I remember. Definitely looked solid!
I’ve had the mill a bit over a year. Heck, I’ve had the shaper for 6 months now!
If you don't already have them, carbide-tipped blades for the sawzall work surprisingly well on thick materials. I couldn't make out if that might have been what you were using for the last/middle portion of the cut in that plate

Great build! I slammed on the brakes to almost grab a treadmill on the curb the other day but didn't have time to grab it. Enjoyed the random stop motion! Also, is your cutting oil in a doorknob?
Yes. The doorknob doesn’t work very well. It spills a lot.
