What Roman Parties Were Really Like

  • Contrary to popular belief, Rome was not all crazy sex parties. In fact, ancient Roman parties were pretty tame by today’s standards. Most of the time, it consisted of noble families getting together, eating elaborate food dishes, and talking about everything from politics to the weather. These parties were beacons of status and networking opportunities, which is why they became a cornerstone in everyday Roman life. Partying in Rome was common, but racy Ancient Roman escapades weren't popping off on the daily.

Nero was the last of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, the original 5 emperors. In order to shift away from Caesar's bloodline and give legitimacy to the emperors that followed, Nero had to be demonized. Not to say there isn't some truth to everything about him. But there certainly are some exaggerations and untruths mixed in as well. Just like today, the best propaganda has a kernel of truth in there somewhere.

@Ace Saylor syphilis did not appear until the fifthteenth century it came from the nee world, it might have been lead posioning since emperors would have been drinking their water directly from aqueducts that were made with lead pipes where as regular people tended to drink from wells

    • @J3diMindTrix
      @J3diMindTrix 4 ปีที่แล้ว +85

Jace Rivera correct. In fact it was also the containers wine came in that were lined with lead. Lead poisoning is most probably the reason so many emperors were so, well obviously insane. Roman emperors are infamous for their eccentricity but it might have actually all been due to lead poisoning; this needs to be known more by everyone who is interested in the topic!
The little ironic twist here is that the lower in class and wealth you were, the less likely you were to drink from these lead-poisoned containers (and the opposite was true, the richer and fancier the more wine you drank and so the more poisoned you were) so it was actually better for your health overall; a commoner or even a slave might have been healthier than the emperor at the time. Also beer as mentioned was mostly a poor person’s drink but it was obviously far better for your health.

Jace Rivera it’s amazing to see really how little was known, even among the elites, which throughout history until very recently had a massively disproportionate amount of power and therefore access to the best and most knowledgeable doctors, advisors etc, engage in things which most people would consider unimaginably self-defeating, unhealthy, and stemming from just plain ignorance, that is common knowledge today but widely practised not too long ago. In fact it was the inverse of what one would expect, with the upper classes having the more unsavoury and debilitating habits, largely due to their debauchery and access to far-flung reaches. Syphilis was rampant in the Renaissance after it was brought back from the new world, but again, largely affected the elites as they would be more likely to commingle with those who had travelled far and wide. Incestuous relationships were common among royalty, which we now know is the cause of birth defects and genetic abnormalities such as the Hapsburg lip, for instance but even after thousands of years (the Egyptians were known for it) it never occurred to anyone to stop, despite the obvious lewd and foul implications. Make-up, from Ancient Egyptian kohl, right up until the 18th century, was also lead-based. And as someone who visibly wore a lot of it, as in all her portraits, that doesn’t greatly surprise me that she did!
So we had these insane, brain-damaged and poisoned people who often died before the age of 30 making decisions for the rest of society for most of history? Incredible, but true

Rap is the #1 most viewed/listened genre of music and its quite hard to display rap's form of art on a platform that identify itself as "family friendly". TH-cam must apply censorship on nudity on all art forms. And yes, women shaking their butts in this context is depraved. Depraved may be defined as morally perverse. Depicting women twerking their butts on a family friendly platform is by consequence depraved, yes you are correct MCcookiebreath

It's worth pointing out that Roman views on sexuality were very different. For instance, you may wonder why barbarians are always depicted with large phalluses whereas statues of famous Romans almost always have the tiniest wedding tackle. This is because Roman society viewed cunning and intellect as inversely proportional to ones physical "manhood."
It is very likely that the notorious debauchery of many of infamous Romans was greatly exaggerated in order to destroy their historical legacy. The Romans were very aware of legacy and spreading rumours of sexual depravity was a common move in the political playbook for ancient Rome.
It's much more interesting to believe it all but in reality most of it was likely invented posthumously to ruin a politicians legacy or contemporaneously to discredit them in their time.

They partied so hard, overpartying was the second biggest cause of death among the nobility... right after a sudden and terminal case of knives in the back.
If you wanted to overdo some form of gluttony and excess then you could do no better than imitate Roman behaviour. They were savage...in both the conventional and modern sense.

I have heard a story of a pagan cult or maybe even a sect within society, in which the priests of a pagan god,(a fertility god or goddess), would impregnate virgin girls on the altar to their god at a certain time of the year, when their god required worship.
Nine months later, babies were born to these former virgins, and 3 months later, when the time for worship of the god once again came, the priests would take these babies and offer them for sacrifice on the altar to their god,(or goddess).
The blood of these babies is said to have been used, to dye eggs a blood red, and presumably used in some other ritual or rite, in worship of the same god.
Got anything on that? And if so, could you give historical or archaeological information for this?

@@ambientapathy777 Okay, and do you have a reference in print in which this "cult," can be found?
Istar was Babylonian, but there were other cultures that used the same goddess, even if the name was different.
I've read some pretty 'dry,' stuff, and I haven't come across any reference to to sacrificed babies for blood dyed eggs.
I'm not rejecting the claim, that it didn't happen.
      But where's the recorded history?

Everyone in those paintings are death now and we will too. Only then, each soul will know what he has put forth in this short stay. Ask any aged person, they will tell u how fast time flies. 'Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.'

In my experience it was house parties where you were free to roam around. Or backyard parties you paid $5 with kegs where being too loud was a no no. Or hanging out in nature or in parks at night. Each place included socializing as well as romance in some form. As I got older people began networking and singing kareoke at the end of the night. Funny enough the early days included no food and only drink. I think most people got sick of the formality and would just hit up a fast food place afterwards. Sleeping over happened and I cannot recall too many people passing out. Dancing happened and music (a stereo) played most of the time. I did go to some with live bands and even a skate ramp once. From time to time drum circles happened and sometimes guitar playing. In my scene there was drug use and the exchange of merchandise which could include a bag of something. A good host provided this so you did not have to go and trust somebody you did not know. That was my experience in a nutshell.
