Thanks John loved it. I have been mucking around with various things myself. Stumbled upon the Hippo a few weeks ago and have been having some mixed success with that.
Quick question what do you recommend for White? Should I just go with this as well from b3 instead of b6?

      Hi thanks.
I know that 1.b3 works really well with this. I know several people who do and recommend doing this. I experimented with it myself, but I love playing the d3 Ruy set-up too much myself. I also play this as as a system opening against the Sicilian and other openings. I've done videos on these if you check out the opening section of my videos. Ultimately, it's a question of taste, but can absolutely play 1.b3.
      Cheers.

No worries. Here is an extremely rare system opening (my own kind of inventionish) against the Sicilian. This ties in with my d3 Ruy set up as white.: th-cam.com/video/1_WAXjTNZGg/w-d-xo.html
It might not be applicable to you personally, but it's what I play against 1... c5 to e4. Cheers. @@Flash4freedom

As a Hippo player, I enjoy playing the pure counterattack. I use it as both White and Black!

you sir, are a revelation! Will bang out 100 blitz games over the weekend with your d3 ruy lopez as white and owen's as black. Subscribed and eagerly waiting for more! My main opening as white is Queen's gambit so I wouldnt mind if you took a crack at that either :D The one advantage with QG is that I don't also have to prepare for French, Sicilian, Scandi etc etc. Just prepare d4 and Nf3 and we get similar positions mostly. Wouldn't you say?

Ha, ha cheers! Let me know how you get on with the d3 Ruy and Owens. I have a system to deal with the Sicilians, Pirc, Alekhine's etc, whereby I aim to get the d3 Ruy set up/structure. It doesn't always work out but it's better for me than trying to learn everything. (I did a video on the Sicilian d3 Ruy. 2.Bd3!) I used to go onto QGD lines as black but I've (hardly ever) opened d4, but I'll look into it if it's something I could cover. Thanks for watching. Check out the Sicilian d3 Ruy vid!

The Owens looks somewhat similar to the McCutcheon var of the French defense.

Another excellent option. Might even be a better option. Can get theory heavy higher up the ratings though but definitely one to consider.

Hi, it's not from any article, though if you mean the reference I meant to the very poor suggestion of an opening system for black I think it was this one: thechessworld.com/articles/openings/5-best-opening-systems-for-club-players-for-black/
However, as mentioned these are not opening 'systems' at all so it's a terrible suggestion as I explained.

It is hard. There is this or the Dutch against anything apart from e4. So all d4, Nf3 systems, c4, b3 etc. Then Kings Indian or Modern against e4. So you need two systems in total, though both of those are still quite complex.

6:48 - Did you just say "fiantchettouh"? That's the wrong pronounciation. The "ch" in "fianchetto" is a hard "k" sound, because it's an Italian word, not a Spanish one.
(Btw I'm writing this in every chess channel in which I spot the mistake, so eventually perhaps it will disappear! 😄)
