Yeah, same, except I was already thinking about it beforehand and now I’m seriously considering it.

You are so grounded for someone so young. Many people take an entire lifetime to learn the lessons you already know. One thing I will say to all young teachers: please don’t feel pressured to have the “perfect” classroom right at the start. I’ve taught for 30 years and I have gradually acquired things over time. You don’t have to get everything at once. As well, your tastes, preferences and trends will change. My happiest purchases were a heavy duty stapler, heavy duty hole puncher, a label maker and a plier style stapler (trust me, but don’t ever let the kids touch it). I wanted these right away but I ended up buying them over several years. I wish you a long and happy career. You are exactly what our profession needs, especially now. Best of luck!

My #1 tip- Definitely get an additional retirement plan other than your state pension plan. I have a 403b (which is the non-profit version of a 401k) and a Roth IRA. I highly suggest starting ASAP so that you can have a good savings by the time you retire! Both of my parents were teachers and have lived a very comfortable retirement with their state pensions and personal retirement savings.

Thank you for this!! I have definitely been thinking about teaching for years but I get shot down by people a lot because teachers don’t get as much. Even if they should be getting paid a lot. But it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do. Your videos definitely have helped a lot ❤️

My district offers an awesome additional retirement plan. A 457b. I invest half of my check into that. Yes half 😂 but basically if you start at 22 and pay 4,000 a year into it for 15 years by the time you’re 60 you’ll have over 400,000 in the account bc of interest. This is something I’m super proud of. You can pick the amount that you invest. I can also borrow from myself to buy a house. Look into it on TH-cam and see if your district offers it. It’s AMAZING. Also, here from insta! Have a great day Madison! ❤️

Can we please stop saying that we don’t go in it for the money??? It sounds like an excuse for the government to continue to pay us poor wages.
I’m a teacher in south Florida and our cost of living is EXPENSIVE. However, our districts have not given us livable wages-one of the lowest in the country.

I am a school counselor, and I would LOVE to start a TH-cam channel... there are not enough school counselors out here and I really think I could bring a lot to the table. I don't know where to start though! Any tips (camera, other necessary tools, etc.)?

Most school districts have a teacher salary schedule, if someone does ask you about your salary you can point them to that in case they genuinely are interested.

I understand a lot of people don’t like talking about money or what they make but saying something is livable is subjective. I found that I was interested in the field of education and no one wants to say how much they make. Even though it shouldn’t be about money, that is still an important aspect of the job.

You’re so cute. As an “older” person who has spawned people (I think they are people... we will wait until after the teenage years to say for sure!) and been teaching for 14 years now 😬 🤫 I will say this... it is possible to live off a teachers salary. You will never become a member of the 1%. I would also say that someone in your position... young and kidless... should look into investing. Life happens quick! You’ve got the basics down here but my suggestion is to look forward a bit. Get started on that retirement plan now. Talk to a financial advisor about investments that will pay out in the long run not necessarily in the moment. Savings, savings, savings!!!
