- We've been meaning to make this video for a while. Today we compare two Del Morino Funny Top flail mowers, one uses hammer blades, the other uses Y-blades. Well be using both flail mowers on a John Deere 1025r tractor, but these mowers can be used on any subcompact or compact tractor. We try to cut the same type of stuff, and compare the cut afterward. And for good measure, we throw a rotary cutter into the mix for comparison too. Answering the viewer question of whether a John Deere 3025e can handle a 60" rotary cutter. Which is the best? I'm using a Mott 88SHD on a 50 hp TYM, tried both setups over the years, found that hammers will bog the tractor a lot in taller thicker grass. The thinner the Y-blade the better cut in grass, especially thicker stuff. So, for me I just use extreme service Y-blades from Flail Master, and when using the mower in grass I just slow the ground speed. I use the mower for a lot of overgrown property that has many saplings, tall brush, tall grass and smaller trees and pulverize everything to the ground. Trick is to go slow.

Another good video. Thanks. As a data point I pull a Landpride 60" finish mower with a 18.8hp JD670 and have no problems with power unless the grass gets a foot long or so. Then I just slow down a bit. Cheers!
When I was shopping for my new tractor I compared the lift capacities (front and rear), power, and price of 3 different brands (no previous experience with any of them). I have a 72” brush hog and didn’t want to have to go get another smaller brush hog. If I had gotten a subcompact I would have had to go smaller. I went compact for the lift capacities. Unfortunately 2 of the 3 companies had lift capacities significantly less than the one I went with. I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. It lifts and pulls the brush hog with ease. But, I do wish I had discovered flail mowers before I bought the brush hog. Those things are the cat’s meow! Thank you for the excellent comparison.

Running a Del Marino Y blade with a JD 2720. Smooth cut over old hay field. Also have a frontier RC 2060. Del Marino provides a much smoother cut.
Excellent no wonder I subscribed that was fantastic wish I had a summit tractor and a 60in flail mower that we would replace my antique stuff and make it a lot easier
A followup drone shot 5-10 days later would be great. I can't tell much difference when fresh and everything is brown, but a week out bush hogged land doesn't look as nice as flailed. I wonder if there is much, if any difference between the hammer and Y blades. I would imagine the hammer bladed portions would look nicer (fewer tall stragglers and more consistent vegetation)

Hi, starting to think about getting a sub C tractor and thinking of a flail mower. As an student in all of this, can you run Y and hammer blades at the same time? My thought is; if more than 1 blade covers that area of cut you could run one Y for a bit of a finer cut and a hammer to clean up the heavier stuff mixed in.
I have a flail mower with both blade styles. I got it to mow trails that have lots of rocks. I'm not concerned with getting a perfect cut. These are hunting and atv trails used in the fall/winter.
My hunch is that the hammer blades will get damaged with rocks and the Y blades will bounce off them better because of lighter mass. Of course my intention is to avoid rocks.

Great video. I bought the 62" Super Centurion with hammer blades from you in August. Absolutely love it. Hammer blades are the ticket here in SC low country with fields full of woody growth and switch grass. Great machine for ditch line and fence line work
Very helpful video! I'm seriously considering a flail mower for my pasture and lawn, and I've been debating between hammers and Y-blades. Looks like it's hammer time.
If you are only mowing gras, y-blades are the best choice, if there a Stones, rotting Wood, broken branches and Blackberrys, Hammer would be the choice. I cut hedges and recultivate wasteland with maschio flailmowers with Hammers, waistland is hayland after 4 years of mowing, only mowing.

I need blade options for my Titan AT120 flail mower. I only rough cut trails with it, no lawns. 10 of the 80 blades are broken and many are dull.
How do you keep it from scalping the ground!?
I'm running a 6' bush hog on my 3038E, no problems. So happy with my choice of JD. The bush hog is a Woods, btw.
No hearing protection with the brush hog.. is it that much quieter, or did you just not wear them for whatever reason?

Brush hog is good for the first heavy brush cut, still leaves it a little rough… flail mower with hammers is the way to go! The rotary cutter is good for backing in under tree branches.
On another note, you have a lot of inventory sitting in that field, you got a chain up on you entrance I hope!

Great video. Y blades cut better on taller limp grass than the hammer blades. But I like a close cut better. So the hammer blades are my favorite.

I have a 25hp LS tractor that's in the 40hp frame. Has a 66in bucket and runs 60in finish mower, 5 foot bush hog, and flail mowers without any issues. Lifts 1600 pounds in the front and over 1 ton in the rear. Have the rear tires filled with ballast fluid too.
I enjoy all your videos and I’m starting to lean to a flail vs a brush hog and will be purchasing soon. But can you show us on a video for using a flail mower to maintain perennial food plots? Where you’d cut them high or at the highest setting on a flail? I see they can be adjusted up to 6” height? As I’m leaning towards hammer blades for the all around tines. Thank you. Great videos

Great video. Was strongly considering a flail with hammers but I think I'm going to go with a 52 inch brush hog if I can find one. They seem to handle the really heavy stuff better, can cut backing up and will save some money for other attachments lol.
Unless you’re backing into a fence row 100 times in a day, lifting the flail mower and dropping it once you get backed up, doesn’t take a whole lot of time. There is no comparison with the cut. A rotary cutter leaves a finish like a chopped hay field. The flail mower mulches it. You don’t have all the decomposing trash like you do with a rotary cutter.
Plus, if you go offset you have the ability to cut back field edges a little farther back than a narrow brush hog like a 52”, which basically follows the footprint of the rear tires. Much like a narrow deck on a lawn mower.

I have a Kubota L175 (17 hp if I remember right) that came with the property we purchased. What is the widest flail mower I could use with it? We would want hammer blades as we have trails to clear and keep up with along with pastures to maintain. Thanks for all the informative content!

You should try to point the flail with the y blades to private air fields because how low they cut and the rollers roll the track its wat we use here in britain and ireland

I love everything about my flail mower except it's inability to mow backing up. Otherwise, it does a much better job than a brush hog.
How did your flail mower work in heavier brush?
I have never found the hammer blades to be very good at brushing and they seem to do a bit more unintended landscaping than mowers. Both very good at their designed job. They, of course provided the best cut when in 'float' mode and always seemed to cut lower than the Y blades. Overall, not much difference in the job. Hammer blades always left a better looking cut.

Good Morning Courtney, I'm looking for a 5' ish hammer blade flail mower with a hydraulic side shift for my Massey GC-1720. Do you have something coming in in the spring for that? I can't find anything in Canada and you are close enough to me that I could drive there and pick it up.
I can’t wait to get a flail. I have property now with taller grass, the rotary cutter leaves a finish that less than desirable.
Always enjoy your videos. If I may make one comment, I noticed that the tail wheel on the rotary cutter spent alot of time in the air. You need to adjust your center link to allow your float to work as it should. Also, I have a 5ft cutter on my 1025r I of course have the loader on. Its a fantastic combination in my woods, handles my rolling pasture and the mower is wider than the tractor which is wonderful!
How easy is it to change out blades on a model that doesn't tilt sideways?

Great video: the two things I run into with my bush hog is that it will leave clumps of grass usually around turns. I didn’t see that with the flail mower. The other thing I hate is that my skids will leave tracks If the mower is all the way down.
I don’t know your experience level so don’t take offense. But if your skids are digging in, you should check your pitch front to back. If you’re using a rotary cutter all the way down. You’re using the wrong tool imo. But raising up your tailwheel(s) may help.
I had a Kubota b2650 I pulled behind a 60-in LAN pride brush hog I had no issues with it and that tractor only puts out about 18 horsepower at the PTO I would get into some very thick stuff all I had to do was slow down

No sir, only mowing, not tilling
Then you need a mulch head like FAE or Meri-Crusher. They will flail brush above ground or roots below ground, depending on height adjustment. It has no flails but like cold planer chisels and is out of the league of a compact tractor.
How come you never talk about the John Deere 3036e?
I have despised the green tractors since the day I visited a John Deere dealership in Springfield Missouri 40 years ago.

I'm now seriously looking at a John Deere 2210.
It's primary duties will be mowing my lawn and more importantly hauling a fat old man to Sunday buffet at the only restaurant in my town.
And yes we ( children, grandchildren and my father) have had long discussions.
And yes it's an older machine but appears well taken care of.
Personally I can't wait for it to break down so we can see if our local John Deere is half as decent in the way it treats people as you are.
The last tiny tractor to meet my needs was a craftsman dgt 4000.
1300 long hard hours of gentle use later it finally died.
I have been known to drive up the county courthouse steps. I believe that's illegal now.
I will definitely park in 6" deep flowing water and spend an hour fishing.
The new to me 2210 will not be allowed in the kitchen.

My understanding is that flail mowers don't work in reverse and bind up like that. Which is obviously pretty invonvenient. Don't make my mistake - buy a flail mower that offsets well past the tractor tire!
I was having trouble deciding between these blade types. Just one question. Can you switch between these when needed?
Yes you can. It just takes a bit of time to unbolt and switch approx 20 sets of hammers to knives and visa versa

Exactly, I jumped on a 53” while waiting for a 48”. Price was up a few hundred bucks over the summer alone.

Great video and comparison....particularly the flail with two versions of cutters. I could use both. I'm really leaning that way due to the diverse grasses/weeds I now cut with a small rotary. But, it ain't "cuttin' it"....so to speak. Mowing is a BIG, time-consuming effort and the brush hog solution just doesn't provide the results and "rewards" I expect for the effort. Besides....my 4 month old LX2610 (nicknamed "Ku-bubba" by my 2.5 YO and youngest grandchild who goes by nickname "Bubba"....get the connection?) needs a quality results behind him.
I have no excuse to buy a flair mower besides pure giggles. My postage stamp lot barely qualifies for a push mower. :)

It's not the best to mow all of your land at once. Field flowers, butterflies, insects will be going extinct soon from your land this way. In the Netherlands it's iligal to mow 100% of the shoulders and middle sections on our interstates and highways for instance. We now only once on sand soil, in fall/autumn. After mowing: we leave it laying for one week so the plants and flowers can dry and leave seeds in the soil. Then, we suck up the cut off a week later. Clay and normal soil we mow 2 times. Once in late spring, early summer, once in fall. But: both soils; we leave a minimal of 30% unmowed. So bugs and butterflies etc have a refuge to go to. And other plants can reproduce.
By doing this, we have more flowers in our shoulders of highways, more insects and butterflies, which attracts birds. We also have less fog in mornings which contributes to safety.
We don't use a hammer flail mower that cuts up everything anymore. It's down that that machines needs to much power to work and isn't that efficient in the long run. It's like putting poison on your land with that machine, all is destroyed. Circle and cyclone mower are key. And... We never plow! We take off the cut offs after one week or so, so the cut off grasses don't suffocate the more delicate flowers.
Instead of green deserts of grass, without and fauna life, we now are bringing back colorful strips of green, full of butterflies, ladybugs, dragonflies are even coming back in big numbers.
So; why are you plowing cut off grasses into your soil with your plow? All you do is suffocate new grow. It was better to take away the cut off first... Learn from mistakes in the past, and try to create sustainable and diverse nature in your fields. You have the room for it as non commercial land owner.
Leave 1 or 2 strips between the forest and your worked land untouched. And see nature coming back. You also need the bees for your vegetation reproduction

Who is ever flying the drone, they should check out getting a FPV set up. They won’t be the exact same shots you can get with a stabilized quad with a gimbal but you can add to the different shots for the overall edit. The bonus is actually flying it unlike an auto pilot thing as a DJI set up.
The footage shown in these videos is pretty amazing. We taken them for granted now but like 15 years ago if you’d seen this it would have been like ‘wow’
You forgot to mention another reason the 3025e is better equipped for the 60” brush hog is larger displacement engine makes more torque. HP is only half the story with these engines…
