Could you look a little deeper? Who is at the foundation of this conflict? The United Nations, the United States, and most countries recognize that Taiwan is part of China. So, China is conducting military drills on its own property. Who is the only country encouraging Taiwan to fight China to the last Taiwanese? You guessed it. The same country that forced Ukraine to fight Russia, to the last Ukrainian.

US officials met with Zelensky in Munich in early February 2022 and tried to convince him that the invasion was imminent - he didn't believe it, he never thought Putin would do it. One of our officials returned home and reported that "they may never see Zelensky again." Within days, it happened. The Ukrainians didn't want that war, but they are going to defend their homeland just like any other country would do. The US (and other allied countries) send weapons to help them defend themselves - that's what allies and friends are for. There is only one responsible party for that war - and it isn't America - it's Putin. He could end it today by pulling his troops out of a sovereign state where they don't belong.

For the past 79 years, Taiwan is governed by a Chinese government, aka. Republic of China.
People’s Republic of China inherited all the territory rights of Republic of China.
The *actual* question is: independent of who from? There are *two* competing governments: The People's Republic Of China and The Republic Of China. If you say Taiwan is independent, without qualification, then you're actually *also* declaring it to be independent of The Republic Of China, whose government is sitting right in the middle of Taiwan. The Republic Of China still lays claim to all of the mainland, as well as Taiwan, but has claim only to Taiwan and few other scattered territories. If you make Taiwan independent, then you're basically disbanding the government, itself. *Both* governments may see this as a threat and challenge the claim.

If you like technology and its open availability you should care. Taiwan produces over 60% of the world's semiconductors and over 90% of the most advanced ones. If China owns Taiwan, they can choose who has access to that tech. Taiwan is a significant place and needs to stay independent. We'll see if that remains true after we finish building our own semiconductor plants on a high enough scale here in the States but until then Taiwan is pretty much it.

1) In 1894, Japan invaded China and Korea, the Qing govt was defeated and signed the [Treaty of Shimonoseki] to cede Taiwan Island to Japan.
2) During the WW2, at the Cairo Conference held in 1943, China asked the transfer of Taiwan's sovereignty back to China after the war. This content was included in the [Cairo Declaration] and later reiterated in the [Potsdam Proclamation] that it should be implemented.
3) In 14 Aug & 2 Sept 1945, the Emperor and govt of Japan issued the [End War Edict] and [Japanese Instrument of Surrender], Japan surrendered and accepted the [Potsdam Proclamation]. Japanese troops in Taiwan surrendered to KMT General CKS and Taiwan re-entered the territory of the Republic of China (ROC).
4) Soon after that China civil war broke out in between KMT and CCP, the KMT was defeated and fled to Taiwan. However, due to US intervention, the CCP without strong navy at that time has no ability to unify Taiwan. The CCP then established the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. The civil war continues.
5) In 1971, UN Resolution No. 2758 ruled that the PRC had obtained the representation rights and all legal rights originally owned by the ROC in the UN. That means the PRC is China’s only legal govt under international law and is recognized by 181 countries around the world, including the USA.
"The USA recognizes the Government of the PRC as the sole legal Government of China."
"The USA acknowledges the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China."
Joint Cummunique on the Establishment of Diplomatic relations between the PRC and the USA in 1979.
