If anyone wants a more female centered movie I recommend 'Mona Lisa Smile' (2003), about a women's college teacher who gives a course in Art History and her classes reaction to her modern approach. It talks about women's educations in a man's world circa 1950 and societal expectations towards young women.
I was about to make that same comment. When I watched the movie for the first time a year ago I felt sort of dumb for not having watched it earlier because it was sooooo amazing.
Knives Out is set within the last 5 years, the youngest boy is using an iphone throughout the movie. But it definitely achieves the aesthetic incredibly well!! Rian Johnson is so good with aesthetics.
I think Knives out is supposed to be set in 2019 because during one of the family discussions they talk about "refugee children being locked in cages by Trump". The aesthetic is very 1970s though, and I love it
UPDATE: I've been informed that i said 2009 for The Mummy and i absolutely meant 1999, no idea why i said the former. And I've been reminded that Knives Out is set in modern time as they literally use iphones so i'm DUMB sorry hahahahah Timestamps in the description box. Apologies if the way i pronounce Academia bothers you. I'm aware its typically pronounced 'acaDEEMia' but i'm too used to saying it with japanese pronunciation 'acaDEHmia'. It is what it is. I know you have said that you don't like to hear your voice or speak in videos, but I really like your voice, it's so calming and aesthetic that is just magic in the ears. I loved all the concept of this videos
OMG YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW HAPPY I AM TO SEE THIS COMMENT OMG- okay Ik that’s a bit of an overreaction but bitch jsjsjansbd you don’t know how much I have begged my friends to see it and how I have literally never heard another person talk about it :D
I adore these films, but most of these are not in actuality dark academia, except for dead poets society, and kill your darlings Dark academia is first and foremost a genre, and the only criteria is: • academic setting (school, university, college, academy) • dark themes (murder, crime, drugs, the struggles of mental illness, abuse etc.) Take for example black swan-it’s dark academia-she’s in a dance academy, and dark themes are scattered throughout the film (if you like black swan, I’d highly recommend whiplash, music school and dark themes)
@The Strangler hm, i don’t think it would since it’s not set in an academic setting, so it would only encapsulate one of the criterion; the darker thematic and plot But stoker is a marvellous film regardless, which I would recommend everyone to watch ! Park Chan-Wook is an excellent director, with an impressive filmography -.
@The Strangler I wouldn’t say so, since their time in school is there as more of a backdrop-so to speak-rather than an setting. Like, they’re teenagers and most teenagers do go to school, it’s part of their everyday life, so it’s natural to put it in the film, but the plot of the film itself doesn’t revolve at all at their stay in school, or about any academic setting? If that makes sense?
Although it’s not Dark Academia, I think you would really enjoy Jane Eyre (2011). It’s one of my favorite films based on my favorite novel of all time. It’s Victorian, and it makes use of a really nice, muted color palette.
i think Jane Eyre definitely could be considered dark academia- the element of mystery is absolutely there! i ADORE the 2006 miniseries adaptation, but im sure the 2011 film is enchanting, as well!
I was thinking of this one too! Also Anne of Green Gables the Sequel (1987) & sorta the new Enola Holmes movie although the aesthetic is probably a bit too whimsical.
I definitely love the fact that you finally took the space in your channel to talk discussions. I love that! I have actually been around here for a while and I always loved your content. This series though made me more excited about your channel. I loooove DA movies. They are just my absolute Type of movies and I am happy you broke it down in details. Thank you for this awesome video!
Just wanna say thank you Kenna, I know you don't like talking but I appreciate coffee with Kenna and your thoughts thank you for being comfortable to do this for us
Other movies I would include are The Secret Garden (1996), Maurice (1987), Pride and Prejudice (2005), Nanny McPhee (2005) and Zodiac (2007). Sone might not fit into all the categories but for me they had that feel
Hannibal (2013-2015) is also a highly underrated DA show!! The aesthetic glows throughout the show, the costume designs and decor is amazing, and it is a murder mystery/love story 👀
I honestly really appreciate when you do talking videos you talk like a normal person and don't oversell everything or pretend to be overly excited about something unless you really are. You're videos and style are so unique and so good and I hope you can keep this up
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell is a must-watch. It's a short series and I believe it's set in during the Napoleonic Wars but it's incredible. It's set in an alternate universe in which magic has existed but it's very "theoretical". The central character haphazardly attempts to practice magic. No. 1 Time Period: unfortunately 30 years too early. No. 2 Aesthetics: dark, dusty libraries, unlit candles, blues, and, greens. No. 3 Pursuit of knowledge: the central character is attempting to break free from the rigid philosophy of magic and attempts to learn it from untrustworthy sources
Lovely video! But about Dark Academia as an aesthetic, I feel that it can be quite eurocentric and classist at times. 99% of the time it's a story about white people who have no responsibilities and an excess of money and time on their hands. In order to go beyond these constraints of the discourse, I would like to list 2 films that do not subscribe to conventional DA:- 1. Secret (2007)- A Chinese movie about a musical prodigy and who falls in love with his classmate at a fancy music school. It doesn't fit the time period mentioned in the vdo ^ but i guess it could still be considered DA 2. Parineeta (2005)- A bollywood film thats set in early 1900s Bengal and talks about the issues of class and religion during that period. Its an adaption of a very famous Bengali novel of the same name, and has brilliant aesthetics I hope we can all make DA more inclusive so that it can be enjoyed by everyone :)
Just a comment to help with the algorithm, however very proud of you for finishing this video and I agree with all your picks including Knives Out. [never comment because of my anxiety]
Thank you for this video! I just woke up for work, but I got a little bit time for getting ready in the morning in a chill paste, so I made me a coffee and now watching your video.
Loved this list! I think Knives Out might have been modern day because of the cell phones, but you’d never think it because of how historic the setting feels. 🤎
I LOVE those kinds of videos, thanks for the recs. I've been definitely getting more and more into my DA and witch side, and this is GIVING ME LIFE. Hope you're doing well
Maurice (1987) has some great DA vibes too!! It’s more about the gay romance than learning but it’s set in the Edwardian era and most of the beginning takes place at a gorgeous University. I highly recommend it!
oh my lord, just wow! I stumbled upon this channel by accident and did not regret a bit, the atmosphere, aesthetics and style in your videos are great. I will be happy to continue to watch you
The wagon is very old but nowadays it's just a matter of time for lifestyles of any kind to become a trending aesthetic... It's kinda cute but also sad that observing people tend to classify them like they are just upcoming youth scenes. So I guess the reason that Kenna defines it in her very own way is rooted in the fact that it was an intrinsic and intuitiv thing for her before it was a thing on social media. It always seemed like she's not just using the vintage aesthetic but rather spend time to dive in and understand different eras and their people and culture. Surely she's not the only influencer with this mindset but maybe one with pleasing visuals and topics that already matched well to the upcoming DA trend... ;)
Your videos always make me feel calm, thank you for putting so much effort into them we really appreciate it! The Mummy and Crimson Peak are some of my favorite movies.
So glad you included Kill Your Darlings, I recommended this back when you asked on your insta and IDK if you had previously seen it but if my suggestion (among some other people that might have also suggested it) helped you discover something new or remember a previous enjoyment for the film, I'm so happy!
Selah and the Spades is a great dark academia movie with Black characters. Knives Out has characters with cellphones so its probably the time period of the time it was released (2019)
Movies i think you would love: Mary Shelly-biography(mother of goth and her life story is inspiring) Sleepy hollow-doesnt fit time period its set in 1799 but its my absolute fav and its by tim burton, also johhny deep is there so YES(mystery and aesthetic kind of fit) Atonoment-tragic and kind of romantic but the costumes and everything else is amaizing The others-set in 1945,if you like horror but its more of a mystery same with The woman in black Shiki and black butler for anime
This video was a amazingggg! I was always very attracted to this type of films but never knew how to explain them! Now I know it’s DA hahaha thank you! The photography of the video was superb, Kenna! Good job!
The Mummy and Knives out are probably my two favorite movies of all time. I also love Hugo, it's one of the first movies I can remember that got me really interested in film history (now I'm a film school graduate!) I can't wait to check out the other ones you named!
Excellent video and yes, the mummy is suuuuch a good movie ♥ (all my childhood) Other titles i think can fit : - the oxford murders - alex de la iglesia (2008) - good will hunting - gus van sant (1997) and two series : - penny dreadful - carnival row
I always find myself coming back to your videos because they are absolutely lovely. YOU are absolutely lovely. Thank you for being you and putting out all these wonderful videos :)
i have never seen most of the movies or knew about dark academia and this summed it all up really well ☺️ also your voice is stunning ✨ absolutely loved your work on this
i know how much you hate filming talking videos so just wanted to thank you for putting in so much effort to this video even if it has made you uncomfortable!!
My goodness! Your videos are always so stunning. Every shot has so much detail that all together feels like a magical dream I want to live in. Would you consider making a video on your process of how you put videos together? (or have you?) I'm wondering if you plan out each shot before/have a list of different things you want to film before you get started, or if it's all just on the go with a general idea of how you want it to look in the end? x
I love this!! there are definitely some new ones I can't wait to check out, but you definitely mentioned a few of my all time fave movies. also the aesthetic of this video is so on point, I love your DA vibes
i just came home from a long day of study and now on the couch ready to watch this video... im so excited for it, i love dark academia and ever since you mentioned it on your instagram i have been so keen for this!
Knives Out surprised me and I’m glad I watched it! I’m picky with the newer movies that come out but that one I really enjoyed and I could watch it over and over. Also I haven’t watched Hugo but I LOVE the book (The Invention of Hugo Cabret)! A very heartwarming story with beautiful illustrations in it.
yooo, Crimson Peak is MY FAVORITE!! It starts in Buffalo, (which I live very close to, so we're proud) and the costuming is to DIE FOR!! Also, we love some George Milies up in here! The Music and drama faculty at my high school actually wrote a musical based on his life/career, so that's the only real reason I even know of him. XD
I know you covered films in this video but if you, or anyone else, is looking for a good DA-feeling TV show I would highly recommend the Canadian series Murdoch Mysteries. It takes place during the late 1890s and early 1900s, features some awesome fashion and a great DA colour scheme. It's a crime series so lots of detective work, and two of the main characters are a brilliant detective constantly pursuing knowledge and 'new' techniques to solve mysteries, and a female doctor working in a number of fields like forensic pathology, childrens medicine, and mental health. Theres lots of discussion surrounding historic events, literature of the time, development of forensic sciences, and plenty of historic figures like Nicola Tesla, Arthur Conan Doyle, Mark Twain, Harry Houdini, and Alexander Graham Bell make appearances. It's also very historically accurate as far as the locations, names, and props go!
It doesn't feel like fall until I start to see your amazing fall themed videos 🧡 Thank you for the movie recs, I will have to set aside some time for a cozy coffee and movie sesh 🌾🍁🍂
i loved loved loved this video!! the editing is so wonderful, and these movie recs are so great kenna, I sincerely hope you can keep making more in the future! stay cozy to you as well 🤎✨
Can’t wait to watch some of these I haven’t seen yet! I’m not sure it hits all the criteria but if you haven’t seen it I recommend The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
There is a German film trilogy about a family time traveling in London. Rubinrot tells a story about Gwendolyn finding love between time, saving her family. A huge plus: A LOT of vintage/historic costumes where used (timetravel duh) and we get this dark autumn mood. Give these films a try!
I never usually comment on videos but I want to help out your channel ~ I’ve been struggling with work life balance recently but I’ve decided that I’m going to take time out a few evenings a week and watch all these movies for some self care. Thank you so much, your content is always a joy 🦉🍂🍄🦇
This is such a beautiful video and I seriously thank you for all the work you put into it! It shows! Also this is such a comfort video for me on a day I feel sick so ty
Love the suggestions. Definitely some on the the list I haven’t seen before but now want to check out! Btw if I recall, I believe you were looking for some more “fun” dark academia films as well. I can only think of the Sherlock Holmes movies staring Robert Downey Jr. or the black and white film Young Frankenstein that might work for the criteria apart from The Mummy. Could Disney’s Haunted Mansion also count? 🤔😅 Certainly all cheesy movies in their own ways but I still enjoy them lol.
I would also recommend Spider-wick! The movie is not as amazing as the books, but I believe the aesthetics, characters, and theme of knowledge and discovery makes this a great addition to any DA films list! Also super lighthearted and fun to watch!
I don’t remember much about Dead Poet’s Society, but I do remember that I saw it at a young enough age for it to permanently and continually affect me. Existential crisis at age 8 or something like that. Definitely gotta watch some of these other ones too now :)
hi kenna just wanna suggest an idea: maybe a video showing some makeup looks that match with each lipstick from your line? i think that’s be so cute and god knows we love some autumnal makeup looks! (also i’d love to see one of your lipsticks used as a liquid eyeliner!!)
I LOVE that you said The Mummy as the first film because one time I was in one of my favorite DA outfits and my friend told me I looked like the librarian from The Mummy and I felt fantastic about it.
I love crimson peak and knives out!! there's a french movie "au revoir les enfants" that I think also fits this aesthetic. It's about kids in boarding school during the time of the holocaust, it's amazing. Also with the same vibe is "Angela's ashes" about an irish family in 1935, it has the best dark humor. And finally, "Never let me go" - the main character in this one is actually a woman, yay! it's not set in any specific time period but more of an alternate universe that looks sort of like 1930s? england - it's best you go into this film without knowing anything about the plot. I hope if you're reading this you watch some of these, they're great.
Have you ever watched any of the St Trinians films or seen any of the books or art? i think you might enjoy them. It's about an all girls school for misfits in the UK. In the more modern adaptions there are school groups based on fashion, music and different parts of British culture. They solve mysteries, commit crimes and generally cause mischief. I'm currently doing some concept designs in my spare time to bring it more up to date. It's a great concept to let your imagination run wild with!
These were amazing recs!! also I totally blanked on Knives Out's time period too, it seriously has such a DA feel. If anyone wants an amazing dark academia novel to read this fall, I highly recommend If We Were Villains by R.L Rio! It's set in a very exclusive university that breeds world famous Shakespeare play actors, who end up breeding their very own story tragedy. A lil murder mystery, VERY MUCH dark academia, and set in autumn! Please read it so I feel less alone in this world
Thank you for this list!! I'm going to watch Hugo later today cuz it looks so beautiful. I know you don't feel the most comfortable with talking videos, which I totally understand! But you do an amazing job, you're well spoken, and I hope you aren't too hard on yourself! Loved the croissant part 10/10 lol stay cozy :-)
oh my gosh at the start of the video my first thought was Dead Poets Society, I'm so glad you mentioned it because it's one of my favourite films of all time 💞 edit: OMG Kill Your Darlings is another favourite, that film left me in an existential crisis: the only time a film has had that kind of effect on me.
I'll have to check out some of the films you suggested! I would suggest the Agatha Christie Hercule Poirot series but the one with David Suchet as Poirot.
i just finished designing my phone a DA aesthetic. also knives out is so great and dead poets society is so dear to me. great to see this video, kenna🍁✨
If anyone wants a more female centered movie I recommend 'Mona Lisa Smile' (2003), about a women's college teacher who gives a course in Art History and her classes reaction to her modern approach. It talks about women's educations in a man's world circa 1950 and societal expectations towards young women.
100% agree, it's a brilliant movie
I was about to make that same comment. When I watched the movie for the first time a year ago I felt sort of dumb for not having watched it earlier because it was sooooo amazing.
Yes yes yes!!!
Anne IJzerman Yes! I just left this as a comment! I love this movie so so much
I was just about to suggest this! I always watch Mona Lisa Smile and Dead Poet’s Society together, it just feels right.
Knives Out is set within the last 5 years, the youngest boy is using an iphone throughout the movie. But it definitely achieves the aesthetic incredibly well!! Rian Johnson is so good with aesthetics.
wow love that i didn't pay attention to that at allllllll.
everything seemed so vintage i must have ignored it hahaha!
that’s just a goood movie!! i just saw it a week ago
cozykitsune in your defense everything else in the movie screamed 1970, including the fashion 🤧😂
I think Knives out is supposed to be set in 2019 because during one of the family discussions they talk about "refugee children being locked in cages by Trump". The aesthetic is very 1970s though, and I love it
@@cozykitsune they're literally driving a modern car at the end of the movie...lol wow
UPDATE: I've been informed that i said 2009 for The Mummy and i absolutely meant 1999, no idea why i said the former.

don't worry! I pronounce it the same way because I think it sounds less harsh :)
Wait so most people don’t pronounce it as “acaDEHmia”? I’m British and I’ve always pronounced it like that.
I've never heard anyone say AcaDEEmia in UK or Ireland :')
British pronunciation is Aca-Deh-mia also !!

Downton Abbey for me hahaha
My favorite film genre.
I just finished harry potter XD
I know you have said that you don't like to hear your voice or speak in videos, but I really like your voice, it's so calming and aesthetic that is just magic in the ears. I loved all the concept of this videos
We’re describing people’s voices as aesthetic now?
@@jeje1421 What no, did you get offended? I mean, I was just giving a compliment that's all.
I definitely reccomend “Tolkien” from 2019, it definitely has DA vibes considering the setting, costumes and theme, it’s very inspiring
Yes! I was going to mention Tolkien as well. 🖤
I've seen it! I enjoyed it but it wasn't in my top favs. a bit too sad!
"Tolkien" was my first thought when I learned (in this video) what dark academia actually is. I had no idea :D

I adore these films, but most of these are not in actuality dark academia, except for dead poets society, and kill your darlings
Dark academia is first and foremost a genre, and the only criteria is:
• academic setting (school, university, college, academy)
• dark themes (murder, crime, drugs, the struggles of mental illness, abuse etc.)
Take for example black swan-it’s dark academia-she’s in a dance academy, and dark themes are scattered throughout the film (if you like black swan, I’d highly recommend whiplash, music school and dark themes)
I now understand where the name comes from, thanks a bunch !
I, too, Also recommend Whiplash to those who enjoyed Black Swan. Very similar vibes
@The Strangler hm, i don’t think it would since it’s not set in an academic setting, so it would only encapsulate one of the criterion; the darker thematic and plot
But stoker is a marvellous film regardless, which I would recommend everyone to watch ! Park Chan-Wook is an excellent director, with an impressive filmography -.
@The Strangler yeah, but I have not mentioned crimson peak in my initial comment because it is not dark academia due to the reason you listed
Although it’s not Dark Academia, I think you would really enjoy Jane Eyre (2011). It’s one of my favorite films based on my favorite novel of all time. It’s Victorian, and it makes use of a really nice, muted color palette.
Well, since many DA people really enjoy English classics and Jane Eyre being a book I've seen being mentioned before, I'd say it passes very well
i think Jane Eyre definitely could be considered dark academia- the element of mystery is absolutely there! i ADORE the 2006 miniseries adaptation, but im sure the 2011 film is enchanting, as well!
I was thinking of this one too! Also Anne of Green Gables the Sequel (1987) & sorta the new Enola Holmes movie although the aesthetic is probably a bit too whimsical.

The visuals in this video are so beautiful! Amazing job 🍂
I always find myself coming back to your videos because they are absolutely lovely. YOU are absolutely lovely. Thank you for being you and putting out all these wonderful videos :)
i have never seen most of the movies or knew about dark academia and this summed it all up really well ☺️ also your voice is stunning ✨ absolutely loved your work on this
This was super cute. Also, super impressed by the little details, like the worn black backing behind the images you chose!
i know how much you hate filming talking videos so just wanted to thank you for putting in so much effort to this video even if it has made you uncomfortable!!
ah I’ve missed your coffee with Kenna videos so much but totally understand why you don’t make them as much anymore! love any DA content!!!
I was waiting for Kenna to do Dark Academia content 😍 what a treat
Dead poets society was the first movie I watched to kick off my autumn-movie-watching. One of my favorite movies.
My goodness! Your videos are always so stunning. Every shot has so much detail that all together feels like a magical dream I want to live in. Would you consider making a video on your process of how you put videos together? (or have you?) I'm wondering if you plan out each shot before/have a list of different things you want to film before you get started, or if it's all just on the go with a general idea of how you want it to look in the end? x
Really enjoying the background remix of autumn in New York that song rocks.
what a wholesome video omg the vibes 🥺🍂
I just watched one of your Old videos of (Disney Tag) I loved it and now I am here 1st time in your Channel. 💕💕
I’ve been watching you forever, i absolutely adore you and your videos! thank youuuuuuu
Yasss coffee with Kenna is back, the vibes in this is immaculate
Oh my Gosh-Murdoch is EVERYTHING!! XD
@@marillmusik I love it SO much
@@spectacled__owl Me too! I'm still working through watching it for the first time!
I think they are really badly made 🙈 the books are good though
I never usually comment on videos but I want to help out your channel ~ I’ve been struggling with work life balance recently but I’ve decided that I’m going to take time out a few evenings a week and watch all these movies for some self care. Thank you so much, your content is always a joy 🦉🍂🍄🦇
Loved this! The vibe is immaculate and you must have put a lot of work into this! Now I have loads of films to watch over the autumn...
Happy to see you do a Coffee with Kenna video again! Thank you for the movie recommendations
This is such a beautiful video and I seriously thank you for all the work you put into it! It shows! Also this is such a comfort video for me on a day I feel sick so ty
such a cute video! just put hugo and crimson peak on my to-watch list and can't wait to check them out. thanks kenna - i absolutely adore your taste
I love your whole aestetic thing , awesome *-*
This reminded me of some great movies I haven't watched in forever, and gave me a few more that I haven't seen. Love it, thank you!
I hope if you're reading this you watch some of these, they're great.
i wanted this video to never end. everything about it was so cozy and heartwarming. thank you for your content McKenna, lots of love from Paris
the way that you convinced us to watch Crimson Peak just by stating that Tom Hiddleston is in it, my respect for you grew a million-and-ten-percent!
knives out is by far my favorite DA movie. i’ve watched it an embarrassing amount of times. glad you included it :)
When is your poetry book coming out?
Please read it so I feel less alone in this world
Was about to see what to watch while having my breakfast. Your notification popped up. THANK YOU!!
Always love your production it is just great and so aesthetically pleasing.
Hugo is my favorite movie to watch. I never get tired of how beautiful and calming it is.
oh my gosh at the start of the video my first thought was Dead Poets Society, I'm so glad you mentioned it because it's one of my favourite films of all time 💞
edit: OMG Kill Your Darlings is another favourite, that film left me in an existential crisis: the only time a film has had that kind of effect on me.
your voice is so smoothing and calming im in love 🥰
Watching "This Beautiful Fantastic" right now and the esthetics reminded me of this video. Have you seen it?
I am going back to my boarding school in England soon, so this is perfect inspiration 😂. I missed this crazy beautiful place so much!
Great video! :) I'm definitely watching all of these movies
I love this kind of aesthetics, cuz I identify with it so much! Love your recommendations, please keep with them hehe
I'll have to check out some of the films you suggested! I would suggest the Agatha Christie Hercule Poirot series but the one with David Suchet as Poirot.
Yay I'm early! I really loved the video and will be checking out the movies! You are my inspiration for my fashion!! Also you are beautiful!!
I'm very glad for these tips. There are many movie mentioned here that I haven't seen
Thanks for the recommendation ☕
Is there any Sherlock Holmes movies or series you like?
Do you know any good anime with dark academia vibes?
i just finished designing my phone a DA aesthetic. also knives out is so great and dead poets society is so dear to me. great to see this video, kenna🍁✨
I love the limehouse golem so much bucketfuls of thanks for including xoxo
