I haven't had the best of luck from Amazon, but it could be different for you.
Primal Clash was my first pack and I got a Sharpedo EX out of it.

are the XY era boxes not as deep as boosters from sword and shield? if i lay my primal clash booster on its back, my evolving skies and chilling reign boxes are a little deeper
Correct, I think the code cards make a difference plus there are energy cards in the newer packs.
